How about a Dragon Ball thread? I love to play Super Butouden 2 from time to time. It's my favourite one.

It's kind of weird to discover that Dragon Ball/Z/GT aired in Japan during /vr/ times, but in the west its seen as a noughties thing. As such I imagine most DB games didn't come to the west until the 2000s, with the exception of Dragon Power.

Super Butouden 2 was my fave too! I played the first and it was OK, but I was blown away by the screenshots in the magazines, then by the game itself.
It was such an improvement over the first one... As much as the third one was a downgrade.

DBZ was extremely popular in France back then, we were only roughly one year behind Japan for the TV series. We got the NES Dragon Ball game, which was even (badly) translated in French, something extremy rare back then (in the NES era, almost all the games stayed in English, including the Nintendo flagship series).
We later got the butouden games on SNES and Megadrive

Dragon Ball was massively popular in the early 90s pretty much all over Europe outside of Britain and maybe the Nordic countries.

Manga and anime were published in the late 90s in Germany. I think Pokemon and Sailor Moon are more popular here.

Super Butoden 2 is my favorite as well.
In Japan there's still a small scene that plays it competitively.
Butoden 3 is also good, even though it lacks a story mode, gameplay-wise it has some small improvements over Butoden 2, but still prefer Butoden 2 overall.
A shame Shin Butoden wasn't really good.

Dragon Ball was a 90s thing for me, by 1998 I had already read the whole manga. But I remember feeling weird knowing that DB started in the 80s, and was actually older than I am, by one year.
Anyway, even if you're in USA, in the early to mid 90s, there was a weird dub of the original Dragon Ball, I think made my Harmony Gold (the guys from Robotech) where Goku was called Zero. It didn't stuck though, and I think in USA only DBZ got popular, but in most other countries we had Dragon Ball first, then Z.
USA also got some of the DBZ movies and the first DBZ episodes on VHS and DVD in the late 90s. But you're right, probably it didn't become massive there until the 00s thanks to Toonami.

Butouden is clunky shit and the split screen is just a cheap gimmick.

Play Hyper Dimension for a real fighting game. But remember, while Butouden flying battles play exactly like ground battles, Hyper Dimension flying battles fucking suck and shall be avoided.

Butoden 1 sure, but what's clunky about Butoden 2 and 3? In fact, the dash mechanic alone makes it very swift and smooth. And that's why the split-screen isn't a gimmick, it's made to adapt to the dash mechanic, you need large stages in order for the dash to be useful (and it's why Shin Butoden failed, stages are really tiny).
Hyper Dimension is definitely great too, though.

I remember seeing ads for Digimon music CDs on german TV, they also used all the original songs but translated to german, not the horrible digi-rap from the US edition. But, I think they used the American names (ie Gatomon instead of Tailmon).

The air levels in Hyper Dimension were only broken because some characters had very OP air moves. If Kid Buu got below you, he could do triple damage with his super fireball move, since it hit you at all 3 stages. Plus he had two triple air fireballs too that he could spam.

DBZ was on Fox Kids in the mid to late nineties in USA. Different dub, and was only from beginning of Namek saga (when they find the old spaceship), to when Goku arrived. Was incredibly frustrating. When it finally went to Toonami, I was blown away by Radditz and Vegeta sagas.

yeah played it too, I was lucky my local store was both renting games (something illegal in my country) and imprting them from Japan/US.
It was sooo good, looked like shit, but for the first time felt like the series, and SOUNDED like it (first DBZ game I know to use the same sfx).

>>5352982
Back then I hated the msics of Super Butouden 2, had the game in japanese and would always pick the track with a 2 or 4 in it (can't remember the number) which was either Piccolo or Vegeta's theme.
Listening to the OST now, I think most tunes sound actually really good, just that most aren't fitting imo for a fighting game.
I would have so much loved to have the musics from the series

Scandinavia got Dragonball around 2000. Only the manga though - I think there was some shitty Danish dub of the first couple dozen episodes of DBZ, but it's always been primarily known as a manga series here.

Yeah, Legends is the best 5th gen DBZ game.
Unique game system, it's repetitive and mostly resorts to buttonmash, but it actually makes a good job at representing DBZ fights.
The battle against the androids was the only challenging part in the game, since it was the only one that was 3 vs 3.
The presentation was excellent, it has that particular magic that I feel Super Butoden 2 also had in its story mode.
>>5353371
It's really janky, but the amount of characters was mind-blowing for the time.
>>5353757
The soundtrack for Super Butoden games (and most other retro DBZ game) was kind of magical though. I love Gohan's piano theme. I think it's fitting for a fighting game, not in a traditional sense, but it has a lot of tension.
The only Butoden 2 track that I think doesn't sound like it's for fighting is Zangya's theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rMJMNyN3kQ
But at the same time I love that contradiction in listening to a comfy track while blasting ki beams.
Also, everyone who likes the DBZ vidya OST needs to listen to the DBZ Hit Collection series CDs, especially volumes 10 to 13 or so, the ones produced by Project Monolith.

oh alright;
really loved Super Butouden 2's story mode (enven tho I played it in Japanses and couldn't understand shit), and was really disppointed whern the sequel lacked one.

Same when the PAL version of Ultimate Battle 22 got released and they axed the dialogue scenes before the matches present in the Japanese version
