what are games with this same vibe and jank that aren't shit

>> No.5344693

There's really no other game like it.

Postal III is kinda similar, except linear and shitty, so it feels like a completely different experience despite having a partially similar style of humor.

Some people will tell you Hatred, but that's NOTHING like Postal and is tonally COMPLETELY different.

Unless there's some indie game that amounts to a glorified trolling simulator (which is basically what Postal 2 is) then there's really no alternative to it. It's a one-of-a-kind experience in gaming.

Avoid Postal III at all costs. It wasn't developed by RWS, and it was so ugly, so shitty that the original creators themselves retconned all of that with the Paradise Lost expansion for P2 (in fact OP, if you didn't play that, fucking play it already. It's exactly what you're asking... More Postal Dude, a "new" map, new missions on a whole new week, new weapons, crouch-jumping and plenty of other differences that you'll like).
>Hatred
I agree with what you said. I could talk more about this one but in the end OP just needs to know that that's not exactly what he's searching.

Finally, there isn't anything like P2, not even a spiritual successor (for plenty of different reasons). I could suggest you Hotline Miami for the violence alone and a very good plot, but that's way too far to the feel and overall what POSTAL 2 achieved.

It's been years since I first played this, and I still can't pinpoint what makes this game so good. It's supposed to be bad, actually it is, but at the same time it isn't. It's so much fun, but it's so janky it shouldn't be, yet it is. No wonder they couldn't follow it up and had to get another developer to do it, I bet they don't even know what they did right themselves.

I can try to offer reasons: Freedom and effort. The entire core game is effectively a video game milgram experiment, constantly putting you into realistic situations where you know you can go in shooting, but you don't have to. There's effort everywhere, police will come to a crime scene and attack the first person they see, even if it's a cat, if you shoot someone in the leg with a sniper rifle, they go down but don't die, there's so many little bits of detail etc. added to the game.
It's actually more fun to play the game and try to act like it's real life, hiding in closets etc.

>Some people will tell you Hatred, but that's NOTHING like Postal and is tonally COMPLETELY different.
When they say this, they mean Postal 1. Hatred is pretty clearly a weird sendup of the first postal

>I still can't pinpoint what makes this game so good

It's actually one of the best designed games ever made.
>open-world game where you can go in every building
>more than 1 way to accomplish most of the non-linear missions (even if this isn't the case for [most of] the linear missions)
>never forces you to do any combat
>never punishes you for playing the game the way you want to

How many games can make all of these claims? And that's without even getting into all of the secrets, the high rewards for exploration, the lack of any restrictions on the player whatsoever, or the fact that it's one of the few games ever made that's actually legitimately funny. It's a master class in game design. The only thing(s) holding back is inefficient programming (which is mostly an issue with long loading times) and combat mechanics that probably wouldn't be fun enough to work on their own in a purely linear and pure action-based game (though even then they're still fun, just not Doom/Quake level or whatever).

I'd kill for an optimized version of the game with no loading screens at all when running around town.

Deus Ex.

I'm being serious. When I first played through Postal 2, I remember thinking "This is a lot like Deus Ex."

Both games reward you for exploration, have open-ended environments, and multiple ways of completing tasks. They even feel similar due to the Unreal engine being used.

Sure, the atmospheres are vastly different. But I would argue that they share a satirical sense of humor, and allow the player to indulge in similarly sadistic and cruel actions without significant repercussion.

It's one of those games where you'll find at least two or three new things every time you replay it.
Just recently I found out that you can make Mike J do all kinds of dances by pissing on him and there's even music playing in the background when you do that.

Actually, I recently learned that the game released in japan and they made an english dub just for them for some reason. I might actually play it if I ever get my hands on that version, because it sounds fucking hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J62LowYltu4

Someone is currently porting Postal III into the Postal 2 engine in the form of a mod titled "Postal III Unreal". There is already gameplay footage of it (in WIP form) and it looks pretty fucking great. The graphics are pretty much Postal III's graphics and the core gameplay mechanics look to be identical to Postal 2's.

There's some stuff you can do in regards to interacting with NPCs but for the most part you can't really do much with the other people in the game other than piss on them and punch them, and there's one alcoholic you can drive to suicide. It is still a really fun game if you like to do random chaotic shit. You don't even have to build the car if you don't want to, but the attention to detail they put into building it makes it pretty rewarding to do, and driving it around like a lunatic in a car you put together is pretty fun. It does have a lot of mindless driving you have to do though, and it's very easy to kill yourself just making the first trip to the grocery store, so it's hard to recommend to most people.
