So, is the PlayStation 2 the best console for playing arcade ports? There's countless of arcade ports, officials and non-officials.

You can play hundreds of arcade games on PS2, as they are available through many compilations. There are compilation of sega games, taito games, shmups, snk games, capcom games, lot of fighting games, racing, atari compilations. Also there's a lot of "unnoficial" compilations that people made were it multiplies the options. Just get yourself an arcade controller and enjoy. PS2 is definitely my favorite non-retro console.

Can't wait until 6th gen is added to DA RULEZ. Will piss off so many boomers that 4channel finally caught up to the rest of the internet on what is retro.

ps2 can do 240p, 480i, 480p, 1080i, etc.

GSM.elf can output whatever you tell it, yet it breaks a lot of games since the system needs to work harder to meet the higher resolution demands. Best to keep it to 240p-480p.

There is no official definition of retro, anon. Some sources claim something has to be 50 years old to be retro, for example.
On /vr/, retro simply means pre-2000.
/vr/ isn't "anon's personal childhood nostalgia board", it's just the pre-2000 vidya board.
Don't like it? Not our problem. E-mail Hiroyuki and ask for /v2k/.
I thought this thread was actually to ask for retro ports, but it's just another "my childhood it's retro too! not fair!" bullshit. Meh.

Guys I bought a ps2 and a mchacker card. I'm going to get it all set up when I can. My question is: can this run retro emulators in 240p? Nes SNES genesis ps1 etc? Is it as good as the Wii? How's the Input lag?

>> No.5347423

>>5347362
The Nes and Mega Drive emulators run ok, but the Snes has some compatibility issues, so a lot of games will run with glitching sound and reduced framerate. If you wanna play emulator, I suggest you get a Wii or a Classic Xbox (a classic xbox can even run arcade games, just install the CoinOPS).

I haven't touched PS2 emulation stuff in years, but it used to be mostly awful. The PS2 just doesn't have the CPU horsepower, so even SNES emulation dropped frames all over the place and was very inaccurate. PS1 emulation is also a bust; while the PS2 has literal PS1 hardware in it for backwards compatibility, you cannot use it in that way while running PS2 software. Therefore all emulation has to be done in software rather than hardware.
There were two PS1 software emulators; one a port of ePSXe from nearly ten years ago. This runs about 80% frame rate for most games and with no sound in the vast majority of them. The source code was lost so it will never be improved. The second was a hacked up copy of an official Sony emulator that was used by Sony on some PS1 reissues available only online in Japan. This apparently works better (with full sound and better frame rate), but only for certain (simpler) games on the platform and I think needs all kinds of messing around to get the games in the format needed to work with it.
If you haven't worked it out yet, homebrew emulation on the PS2 is a massive waste of your time.

There are some compatibility issues, but nothing so that noticeable to the point of nothing being able to play the games. Sometimes the ports have cool stuff in them the arcade version didn't.
Sometimes it's easier to connect a PlayStation to your particular monitor + controls, like using a component TV + PS2 HRAP
Some arcade systems are not emulated as well as the PlayStation port could play them.
The PlayStation is a nice little portable set up you can take anywhere and is very user friendly.

If I were building a cab right now it would be set up to run a Dreamcast + PlayStation 1/2. It would have

>lots of good ports
>home brew emulators are also available
>everything can be controlled with a joystick + buttons
>if you my use homebrew/FreeMC Boot there's almost nothing my friends/family could screw up when using it, and to swap to this mode all I have to do is remove the memory card and hdd
>compatibility with a component CRT TV I can use as a monitor
>there are multi-system PCBs available that will support PlayStation and Dreamcast I can use for controls

And most of all: access to perfect versions of all Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 games, many of which are cab friendly and I have neglected over the years of focusing on games from the 80s and early 90s. It's time to move on to the 2000s and explore.
