UT4 shouldn't exist in the first place, it only did because UT fans cried hard at Tim Sweeney with petitions and pestering his Twitter to make it.

Honestly, UT fans are worse whiners than competitive Quake players, at least the Quake dudes just says that Quake Champions is not Quake and stay away, they doesn't start a fuckton of petitions to close the game or to make like another Quake 1-like game.

A bunch of small things, and a couple of bigger things.

For ICD, the replacement for the 'clipbox' (large bullet pickup), straight gave you 60 rounds of pistol ammunition, and 60 rounds of rifle ammunition, which I always thought was a bit unbalanced.
Instead, there's now an equal chance for spawning a box containing pistol ammunition, or a box containing rifle ammunition, holding 40 rounds each, and going in line with how I changed the grenade ammo pickup and the shell box pickup, it now gives you the ammo in increments of 10, meaning if you only pick up 30, you don't waste the last 10, and so on.

I'll probably work on making the boxes more visually distinct from each other.
I might also change the amount of ammo they contain, as well as the increments you can take.
I did just 4x10 this time, as the way these are set up, I would have to otherwise do like 40+ actors for each box, for each individual cartridge, which ATM would just be tedious.

The netcode complaint is valid though. Shit's fucking dumb. Best friend who plays comp keeps getting stuck with Eurotrash who choose to connect to NA to take advantage of their higher ping.

The shit netcode and lack of player run servers are what are killing QC. I fucking hate these publishing corporations like Bethesda who can't stand not absolutely controlling everything lock, stock, and barrel.

weird thing about wolfenstein's new universe is when this series was known for being one of the first fps then 20+ years later gets a reboot bringing an "expanded" universe that doesn't have much to do with wolfenstein 3d
at least in doom, they bring back older doom designs and are semi-loyal to the previous titles, along with doom 3 stuff like mixon and the d64 chainsaw
it'd be funny if they kept all the games canon so they'd pull an mgs4 by using other games' screenshots as flashbacks

Who's your service provider? All most setups need to port forward is to go to http://192.168.0.1 and login using the default username and password (it's usually 'admin' and 'password'), then find virtual servers / port forwarding under "Firewall". It's obviously going to vary from ISP to ISP, but that's how the last three I've had have been.

You're both obnoxious. But what you can do if you want a static address to connect to, but have a dynamic ip, is run it through a freedns subdomain. So if you sublet from retrogame.com (dunno if that's a real option) you could just tell your friend to connect to "fragz.retrogame.com" or some such.
https://freedns.afraid.org
You need to have a task tray program that periodically checks for updates to your dynamic ip, and reroutes to the proper subdomain on your behalf. "FreeDNS update" is the one you want for windows.

Babel is really interesting but I still can't entirely wrap my head around it.
So many of the tweaks are so subtle but they drastically change how you play doom, since you can't rely on enemies to fire at their own slow intervals anymore, they act more realistically.

Some of the tweaks are neat, some of them are just head scratching, like making the double barrel do exactly twice the damage of the shotgun.

The way it plays reminds me of Doom Delta, oddly enough.

>>5344012
>as much as people hate BD, should at least include Extermination Day because it's a solid map pack.
yeah... SGT. Mark does have a few genuinely solid maps in his catalog, it's probably the one thing I like most about him.

Also, thoughts on a WTF category returning? Ye or Ne?
There's a lot of weird, interesting stuff out there that doesn't fit anything else. The original one was fairly shit but now we have notable shit like Lilith, Foreverhood, borderline jokewads like Abort/Ouch...

Or is there no reason to add a new collum and let people find that stuff on their own?

>Some of the tweaks are neat, some of them are just head scratching, like making the double barrel do exactly twice the damage of the shotgun.
It was more like making the shotgun do a bit more damage. I figured that had less chance to break balance since Doom 2 somewhat depends on SSG action for its maps to work. While it does make the shotgun a bit more powerful, I don't think it invalidates the SSG so it's alright. It's odd that you'd compare it to Doom Delta, I played that a long time ago and thought it was pretty neat. Babel's way more inspired by BURL TUMD and Faspons though.

A note under the old KDITD novel suggesting there are three followups to it, but that they grow increasingly optional with each entry.
I mean I like them for what they are, imperfections and flaws and all, but by the last one the story isn't very 'Doom' anymore, feeling more like some of Team TNTs non-Final Doom stuff (I vaguely get pictures in my mind of parts of Icarus : Alien Vanguard, Daedalus, and Eternal Doom, by the end of the third book).

It feels like they did two novels based on the games, realized they ran out of game to write about (Final Doom might not have been out yet), and figured, they still had contracts for two more books, so uh, like spin them off into just some sci-fi adventure or something.
The authors wrote a lot of Star-Trek novels, so I imagine that both colored the stuff they did write around Doom, and also the stuff they didn't, in how they explore weird sci-fi ideas, and how they wouldn't be constrained by the characters, themes, and typical tropes of Star-Trek (because let's face it, Captain Kirk is an absolute chad, but him and Doomguy approach problem solving from usually pretty different angles, not to talk about Picard, who generally would always seek the most diplomatic solution at any time).
The fourth book gets oddly existentialistic.

Every level is designed with you not having any stock of items at the start in mind.
In fact, items are way too OP in Heretic - stuff like Morph Ovum, Chaos Device, Mystic Urn and (obviously) Ring of Invincibility are all very potent and make the level much easier when carried over from the previous one. Not even counting Tome of Power as they are present almost everywhere.

If you were to stockpile Quartz Flasks and Mystic urns that would turn even the hardest level into a cakewalk.
You dom't want that, do you?

Also it's an incentive to use the items and not stockpile them. I know quite a lot of people who would stockpile all the tomes of power "for the better occasion" and not use them until the episode is over, thus missing out on one of the coolest features of the game.

This way you can always keep one copy of an item "for later". Found another one? Better use it soon!

Watched a few videos of overhyped Ancient Aliens and Eviternity wads.

I'm literally speechless how AWFUL they are, and I won't play a single minute of them, that's for sure.

First, what are these shitty neon colours everywhere? Neon green, neon yellow, neon purple. Then we have new (and badly fit) textures, switches, unnecessary modifications to monsters like the Pinky, which was recoloured in both wads. Why? The original colours were fine, the entire Doom aesthetic went down in the toilet in these wads.

Then the levels. Watched many level videos to ensure you: all fucking levels are the same. THE. FUCKING. SAME. These authors simply lack proper vision to build levels within their own imaginations.

What are these levels then? All levels are like giant, sprawling, Unreal like non places. Wow, open places everywhere, wowey wow, giant towers are looking at you outside the play area.

And the gameplay. The same fucking shit. The same fucking slaughter shit. Early on, they somewhat pretending you are in Unrealised, neonised Knee Deep in the Dead. Then after like stage 20, you are just circling around hordes of irrelevant hordes of clustered enemies.

No progress, no variety, no imagination. Typical hackwork by virgins. Sorry to say that, but if you want good levels, go and play Romero's early maps, the Casalis' brilliant Plutonia, NRFTL or wait for Sigil. Avoid these hackworks at all costs.

If you want to play around with it, here's an (unfinished) build. Some items are tentative, graphically there's a LOT that needs to be done, things are super-imbalanced, etc.
To dash, hit Sprint + Direction (hold Sprint + Forward to drive). Hit Reload for a different kind of dash, a damaging one that hurts enemies. To wall-grab/jump, hit Use against a wall while in mid-air.

That wouldn't make any sense, the AK47 wouldn't really become a thing until after the war was over.
If we look at the (somewhat crudely depicted) rifle closer, it appears to have a 'palmswell' handguard, something which wouldn't become a thing until the AKM in 1959, and the magazine has way too little curve to it to be for the 7.62x39mm cartridge, looking more like a magazine for some AK in 5.45x39mm, or 5.56x45mm NATO, which is something you'd start seeing in the 1960s and 1970s.

The gun is an absolute anachronism, which is actually fairly common for the old Wolfenstein 3D covers, the OP image is one example, where we see a WW2 era German soldier with what appears to be some sort of AR15, which is decades out of place.
Looking at the SNES cover, everything is out of place, looking more Cold War era than anything, with a Beretta 92, IMI Uzi, and an M16A1 (actually faithfully depicting a non-firing replica model). Given how the SNES version was censored to be "Totally not WW2 or Nazis, guys!" due to Nintendo's policies at the time, this one could be intentional though.

Also he's Polish-American, which would make it somewhat less likely (but not impossible).

In terms of just the rendering routines, the polygon renderer has to do extra work versus the vertical scanline renderer. I don't know if it'll be that much faster though, since the SGDK polygon function is fully unrolled and highly optimized 68k.

If you're comparing it to my previous posts in the last thread though, those weren't using any occlusion culling at all, so the engine should end up significantly faster than that overall.

>> No.5346540

>>5346507

and in case it's not clear, drawing in vertical scanlines is what allows doom to use simple 1D and 2D culling, which makes it fast. arbitrary polygons are much harder to cull, you need z-buffers or span-buffers, which are not feasible on a 6.7MHz 68000.

Commenting A_ItemBeam() out makes the VM go like 2 or 3 ms faster, so it isn't the problem here. I'm sure what slows the game down is that the actor checks all six weapons every tic, however I can't come up with a solution other than creating ammo pickups for every single weapon.

Oh lordy, bro I gotta tell you, that's some pretty non-ZS zscript. Make a function that calls
>bool CheckInventory(class<Inventory> itemtype, int itemamount, int owner = AAPTR_DEFAULT)
and return the appropriate ResolveState, with ResolveState("Null") if you want the item to vanish. What you're doing right there is hellish to read. You could even try having all the ammo you want to fit certain checks inherit from a shared type, but I'm not sure if that works for CheckInventory (in a real language it probably would but you never know with ZS).
If you want to benchmark certain lines, try printing results of MSTime() to get how long each function took to execute.

I'd say look at ZS mods, but most of them are pretty janky inside as well. Really I'd say just learn how to avoid TNT1 A 0 spam using code blocks, understand how the built in functions work, and when possible try to abuse class inheritance. I did that a bit with stuff like https://pastebin.com/DG1zYj6n but it may not work in your case without more massaging. Anyways good luck dude.

Is there any way to do heavy stuff and not have it tank performance?

>> No.5346832

>>5346826
Well by heavy I meant stuff like "iterate over everything in the map then iterate over everything else then draw rays between the pairs to check something and execute a function if the vector the ray makes has some property" or some other crap. You're never going to get stuff like that to be as fast as lighter stuff, but depending on the effect desired you can fudge it a bit. For example, I had a function that needed to iterate over a shitload of monsters and then have them compare LOS with them, which ran on that same shitload of monsters. When built in the "normal" way it was slow as hell. However by simply staggering calls so not every monster checked every frame and then multiplying the magnitude of what was going to happen every frame by the number of skipped frames+1, I sped it up considerably and the net result was largely the same.

>> No.5346834

>>5346832
Oh, right, I forgot to add that that really slow function ran on every tic as well. So if there were 100 monsters running it then 100 monsters iterated over at least 100 monsters EACH every tic, and then did raycasts/LOS checks.

I enjoyed Ancient Aliens (like the rest of Skillsaw's wads), but Eviternity did bore the crap out of me, but not for the reasons you mention. I played few maps and outside the pretty texturing, the gameplay felt like dated 90s wad. Encounters weren't interesting or challenging. There was just monsters put into the map without any planning to create fun and challenging battles. The maps themselves just dragged and there was no real sense of progression. New monsters felt pointless and didn't add anything to the roster. It's not the worst wad ever, but it's nothing special either. Just overrated.

That's generally against Doom philosophy (especially the Hell Revealed/Plutonia style, which influenced the community projects more than anything), since it's built around fast and skilled movement, clever and precise gunplay, perfect knowledge of monster and weapons behaviour.

>I genuinely don't understand why companies don't open source their engines after they're done with them.
Because they can put themselves at substantial legal risk by doing so, thanks to software patent laws.

You can get sued by someone because they own the patent to the exact way the mouse interacts with a scrollbar in a window in your game, or something else completely trivial like that (they might not even have devised it, they just got the rights to the patents one way or another), and by revealing your sourcecode publicly, you leave parasites open to go through your code with a comb to see if you're violating their patent.
It could be just about any part, of any code you wrote as a solution to whatever you were trying to achieve.

This is why Doom 4 probably won't become open source any time soon, and why John Carmack is strongly opposed to software patent laws, and always was. When he devised a method of smooth scrolling and smooth parallax scrolling ('adaptive tile refresh') in side scrolling games for home computers, he aggressively rejected the notion by a coworker to patent it, because it meant others couldn't freely use the method for their own games, or further developments of the concept.

Not mindblowingly excellent, but by no means bad, it's fun and does a lot of things right.
I'm hoping Eternal improves on both what 4 did right, and what it needed to do better.

Some don't like that it isn't closer to the original game, and in some ways I can see it, but in other ways, I think that's better, given that Doom as it is (and what user made content can turn it into), is perfect, and I'd rather see a different take on the idea than trying to senselessly ape something that was already done really well. Think about when Hollywood remakes a really good classic movie, and the result is just painfully bad compared to the original.

There's a fair bit to criticize, but there's a lot to praise too, and the whole thing is generally put together quite well, which is astonishing if you consider what a protracted mess the game's development was, and how many times they tore everything down to redo it from the beginning, the kind of developmental wheel spinning which often can produce a rather nightmarishly bad game, à la Duke Nukem Forever.
Also noteworthy is that it's actually rather well optimized and can run and look pretty decent even on a toaster of a computer, which I should mention wasn't fully the case with the original Doom when it came out. You don't put in the effort to make sure the game runs well if what you're making is a cynical cashgrab, there's some skilled people involved who cared about what they were doing.

Some games are really inconsistent with it too, mirroring some guns, but not the others.

nuDoom is not a bad game.
But it takes too much after Painkiller in encounter department
Also you can't ignore the fact, that even if you don't glorykill and remove the glow, enemies would still get into the lengthy "staggered" animation, waiting for you to GK them, instead of simply dying like they should.
IIRC this was also a complaint against some of the overly-long death animations in prior versions of BD that required player to shoot the enemy some more after it was technically dead.

It's better than I expected but it still has the most fundamental flaws of an FPS
It never got any mod support which could have solved 50% of the problems
The movement is stiff, lacking any of the fluidity of classic shooters. I love the new movement mechanics but it feels as if it's just modern shooter movement that's been sped up.
Levels design gets more linear as the game goes on, becoming locked room after room by time you enter hell. The way the encounters are done in the Foundry level feels smart. I can understand why it's arena based for performance, but I'd like to see more roaming monsters in the levels.
Changing the monster behaviors to be more diverse is welcome, as is the removal of hitscans however giving them all full movement abilities is dumb. It removes any kind of ability to create unique monster placement.
Monster AI under the hood is ridiculously over designed, with a faction system, attack tokens and distributed aiming that aren't as effective in creating an engaging game as the simple solutions of 1993. Infighting is unpredictable, enemy prioritization is messy and projectile dodging feels strange when enemies miss when I'm running straight at them
The rebalance of monsters and weapons feels very strange and the amount of splash damage seems really unpredictable.
Glory kills are dumb spectacle and item drops are lazy design. Instakill chainsaw is boring and overpowered, ending big encounters in seconds as arenas are based on MVP enemies that control waves.
Armour being a second health bar is lame, healing stations are stupid when you have healthpacks
Visually the game is good, at least after they gave the monsters some fucking color. Monster animations are fantastic and add so much personality, even if the weapon animations are dull. The music fits the game however is lacks any real memorable melodies, only small loops. The lore was fun and full of fan service but there's still moments where you're forced into story pieces.

Gave new moves to enemies but sadly there's no homing rockets or letting the Manc shoot both cannons at the same time
Weapon upgrades are fun
GK's aren't bad but the game seems to be built around making sure you never lose that health, hence the RPG upgrades and how armor works
Bosses are great for what they are
Art style is a bit messy to the point some enemies and weapons look generic or overdesigned, while Hell got its most boring version yet
I'm excited for Eternal because it makes this game look like just some experiment, from the lack of "arena" room types, to the dash system and an art style that makes Doom more faithfull to its DNA than nuGod of War or nuTomb Raider

>> No.5349549

Say what you want about hitscanners but i liked the idea of the zombiemen carrying the same ammo and guns as you do, so killing them rewards you with free ammo
Doom 4 either made enemies into ammo pinatas or expects you to believe most of these possessed men all carried specific plasma weapons instead of a super shotgun or chaingun

>> No.5349553

I've seen rage 2 has enemies holding conventional firearms and the gameplay seems more or less a cross of nudoom and nuwolf, so it kinda begs the idea why they wouldn't just get tracers for eternal instead of actual hitscans. I always felt avoiding incoming damage in Doom 2016 was just a bit too on the easy side, so additional ways for enemies to reach you sounds nice. I don't know why they just won't commit to the idea. surely spotting them in the middle of an encounter at any given time should be simple enough by giving them recognisable sound and visual cues for when they're about to fire?

I just don't know why they're so adamant to making a Doom game properly difficult.

considering Doom was a blank slate and they worked around what are quite possibly the most basic of mechanics to have in an FPS game, and for what they did, it came out pretty decently, and that it by no means amounts to working in a number of different mechanics and systems for games like Deus ex or System Shock, I don't think it's a fair comparison.

Not outright a crabwalk, but a way to move with a rifle ready is to move slightly sideways, stock against your dominant shoulder, and your head turned where your gun is pointing.
Since your legs are flexible, this works fine and can even be done with good speed, this is also a preferred way for entry teams to move, as moving up a set of stairs, you can avoid the risk of your (probably steel toed) boots, hitting against the steps, making unwanted noise.

>> No.5350273

>>5350256
Nope, Quake Live original intention was to be a free-to-play browser game with changes in the balance and officializing all maps made for Quake 3.

However due to heavy whine from the playerbase because the lack of mods and custom servers from the browser version, it became standalone, and still the complaints kept going because there were custom servers but no mods. Then they put the game over Steam, gave people some time to migrate from standalone version to Steam one, and after the migration was done they locked the game behind $10 which basically killed it.

Besides that, Quake Live is not essentially the same game just because it reuses the same assets, otherwise any game from Valve can be considered "essentially" Half Life as Valve loves to recycle assets between their games to speed up development.
