Depends on whether you want an anime party or the classic D&D experience.

>> No.5333835

FF1 is worth checking out, being the one title in the series with the most D&D-esque feel.

FF4 was the first entry in which the main story is more than a passing note at the service of combat and exploration.

I think 4 is the worst game in the series and laid the foundation for the series relying too much on story abd characters at the expense of interesting gameplay. 2 and 3 remain among my favorites.

reminds me of first getting onto the world map in FFIX and seeing airships fly around
I was so disappointed later on. You learn that other continents are desolate, and most airships need mist to fly so there isn't any airship traffic later in the game. FFIX really dropped the ball for me and the world ended up feeling so much smaller than any other game in the series; FFX literally has more towns and activity in the world than IX.

NES JRPGs are superior to SNES and PS1 JRPGs. Rather than being bogged down with story and characters they are a pure resource management and progression experience.

>> No.5334097

>>5334084
If I wanted to run a spreadsheet in Excel I wouldn't play games. That kind of thinking is what turned JRPGs into trash. It's all bigger and bigger numbers that become meaningless because 64581 isn't really different than 66970 but you eat it up anyway since there's lots of sparkly bits flying around and a combo counter. Pure trash.

>> No.5334107

I think you totally misunderstood what he was saying. It was the focus on story and characters that lead to battle stats and strategy being meaningless and just covered up with shiny combos.

Precisely. I have replayed FF1 over and over again over the years because of the variety offered by different party choices and the lack of story getting in the way of my constant dopamine rush. What's the point in playing FFVI more than twice when you've already seen it all?

His taste is not "weird" as FF8 sold million of copies, as did FF9. You don't enjoy games based on "reasoning" either. Your way of expressing yourself is clearly based on logical flaws.
FF8 and FF9 are beautiful, for starters. Graphic limitations aside, so is 7. They have amazing soundtracks. How strange! Turns out people like that a lot. Much more than pressing "attack" on the same mob over and over again, in fact.
Personally, i love the space segment of VIII, it really puts the game on a pedestal for me, as i love sci-fi. FF7's cyberpunk is a bit more bland, in comparison, and 9's fantasy setting goes up to steampunk and magical civilizations, but not actual sci-fi. Pretty sure i'm part of a large category in this alone.
You shouldn't need more arguments, unless you're retarded.

Are you kidding? What made ff great as a series are the great stories and the unique characters. If you want to play jrpgs for gameplay you should really look elsewhere, ff was never about gameplay (unless we are talking about V) but rather about story.

Maybe they had planned on Final Fantasy IV to have a hunger mechanic like a lot of old RPG's from that era (Ultima, etc.), and the Cook class would have played into that somehow.

Maybe vehicle combat also would have played a role in gameplay, with the Carpenter class being able to repair damage done to the player's ship or airship?

I imagine he likes variety.

Autists who obsessively seek the EXACT same, or at least similar, experiences over and over again is puzzling to me. A guy who's favorites list includes games of different genres, or games that are at least drastically different, I can understand and respect.

And besides that, FFVIII and FFT are both all about micromanagement, to an extent. So on that level, he has an obvious theme going.

I feel like 3 is the best of the nes games, 1 was not quite there yet since it was the first game and 2 is a terrible mess.
About ff3, I think it's a nice game to give a shot if you don't have anything better to play but I think it's still fairly basic and straightforward, nothing too special about it. But the absurd difficulty spike of the final dungeon and final boss really ruined the game for me, expecially since I beat almost all of the bosses (mainline and extras ones) at first try.

Storywise V wasn't great, but imo it has the best gameplay in the whole series.

I played VI-IX as an adult, and my favorite is VII. I like VI, but a lot of the twists and such were done at the time. I already played Chrono Trigger, so I've dealt with "the world, but past/future/ruined" before.

I did play the "Beacause" re-translation for VII though, as I had the original translation was particularly atrocious. In the absence of that, perhaps VI would have been better comparatively?

VIII was great, but was ultimately very weird, I found. It also didn't have the kind of twists and mature themes VI and VII had.

IX was great, but was held up by a lame villain and an asspull final boss. Though, I suppose the latter was a homage to past entries.

Currently I think VII > VI > (VIII=IX).
