Pic related is on sale on the Switch eshop as of now.
Is it still playable today?

Also, classic Phantasy Star thread.

Just got into Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast this past weekend. I have probably 20 hours on it already and am still playing single player. At first I thought the controls were kind of wanky but once you get onto them, they are actually pretty nice. Controlling the camera adds some challenge and makes you play a bit more strategically. I'm going to do the DreamPI thing before long, I bet this is going to be fun playing with others.

I've never really liked MMO but the setting on this is quite nice and reminds me of roguelikes in some strange way. I seriously believe if I had a DC and this game back in college I would have put thousands of hours into it.

if you're gonna play the 1st one, this is the one to play. It has a automap feature... says enough.

I really wish they also released Sega AGES for PS2 and 4.

Yes. The Switch version has a lot of extra features that make it more accessible today, like an item and monster guide, and the dungeon auto-mapping feature.

QoL features aren't a bad thing, anon. Just because you had to suck it up doesn't mean others are worse for playing the game later than you.

Is this a new version of the game or a rom with extra stuff added running on an emulator?

>> No.5339060

Just finished it on my Master System. This version is far more accessible due to the automap. It was a fantastic game, for the time. I would definitely say if you're a fan of 8-bit rpg's than it is a must!

>> No.5339118

>>5339058
The latter. Emulation with some nice eniugh features that makes it worth considering even if you'd ordinarily just emulate SMS game for free.

>> No.5339131

>>5338772
Not that anon, but adding auto-mapping isn't just a "QoL feature"; it's removing gameplay.
Games designed around auto-mapping are different than games designed around player mapping/navigation.
Phantasy Star lacks the puzzles and gimmicks that auto-map games include to make up for the loss of navigation challenge, so if you take away the navigation, there's not a whole lot left to do in the dungeons.
Obviously, if you're personally confident that you hate navigating dungeons and removing that gameplay will definitely be more enjoyable to you, it makes sense to take advantage of the feature, but I wouldn't recommend it as a default way to play PS1.

Nowadays no one has time to draw their own maps. Back then you drew them because you had no other choice and even then there were guides and magazines with them.

Hell, even games like Etrian Odyssey who pride themselves of "muh dungeons and muh mapping" end up filling the map automatically for you as you move.

Why? When you could get the Master System retranslation that's superior in every way also for free? The only reason to go for the Switch version is if you're an incurable buyfag. Whatever, enjoy your burgers.

There is always the choice of not mapping. Phantasy Star dungeons are pretty small and simple. You don't nee4d maps unless you have the memory of a goldfish and the sense of direction of a Cybuster pilot.

Don't complain about the state of gaming if you're not even willing to spend a few bucks on a good port of a great retro RPG.

My god, you're right. I'm going to go out and buy a console that I previously had no interest in in order to then buy a badly translated rom and emulator with built-in cheat features that don't interest me that has an inferior translation to a fan-translated version of the same rom that's been available to be for the last ten years. Sega deserves good fans like me!
