Nope, everyone I knew played a ton of games except some especially poor friends but even they would come over and play vidya at my place. There weren't many cliques in my school probably because I grew up in a small town and everyone got along fairly well. I can't imagine it's any different these days now that games are even more easily accessible and everyone's better off.

Fuck no. My dad was playing video games since Battlezone and had an SNES and gaming computer, so he never gave a shit. Sister used to play JRPGs, Diablo, and tabletop shit with her husband back when they were teenagers. The computer network at my high school had Quake 3 and AOE2 installed and a third of the school would play deathmatch with a shitload of skins.

Prior to Street Fighter 2, young girls were almost as much into video games as young boys. It was the weird guys who went to arcades to play SF2 that scared them off. Then the game industry started focusing almost exclusively on male teenagers.

Before the NES days, there wasn't much difference in popularity in games between the genders. The golden age of arcade was entirely gender neutral (or rather nobody gave a fuck about gender) in its focus. If there was any gender bias during that period it was purely down to more game programmers being male.

My dad was the one who got me into playing video games. He had an Atari 2600 JR and bought the family a NES. To be honest, I can't think of a time when anyone I knew was ever ostracized for playing video games. I grew up in Canada, and video games were generally pretty universally accepted throughout the late 1980's and 1990's. I'm serious. Other than a few people I knew being mocked for their addiction to World of Warcraft. I can't think of a time when it was universally frowned upon.

Ostracized may be too strong a word. What personal hobby that isn't hurting or offending anyone are people actually ostracized for? But a stigma or people thinking it was weird for an adult to like them was abundant. Most people here were kids or minus ages through most of "retro times", I think that for a 25+ year old to be into NES when it was out would have been very unusual.

Never actually. All my neighborhood friends either had consoles or computers as kids. Later in my teens years some people didn't play vidya but those were the weird ones. Everybody played FPS and fighting games, one guy was into racing sims and all the soccer players played soccer vidya. Maybe vidya shaming is more of an American thing? I've seen a couple guys here and there act like gatekeepers to girls, wanting to test them in their vidya knowledge to see if they are worthy of the title 'gamer' (feel cringy just describing how autistic this is), but I've actually seen girls judged far more by other girls. A lot of girls I know would shame/judge their classmates for playing games or having other hobbies they deemed male centric or boyish (this is hs and college for me), and one girl I knew even said she "wouldn't have friends who played video games". Needless to say we didnt hang out after long and I did get a good chuckle one lunch when I saw her playing fruit ninja on her phone, but these people overall are the shallow minority from my experiences, and definitely not enough to deter someone unless your only friends are like this.

For the other kids that played games, they were mostly a casual thing. I was obsessed and wouldn't shut up about them.
