Best way to play Soul Reaver 1? PC port, emulated dreamcast?

PS1, the PC port is messy and the Dreamcast port is great on its own merits but makes some pretty substantial aesthetic changes.

dreamcast. it runs at 60 and looks the best doing it.

Dreamcast port runs at 60 fps, has no polygon wobble, has higher poly models etc.

The PC port is mostly the same thing sans the higher poly models but it's a bitch to get running on a modern PC.

There's a GOG version, it should be easy to run, right?

That's not a guarantee, but worth a download to try anyway.

As others have said, the Dreamcast port is the most solid, despite controls on the PSX being better.

While this is all true, the aesthetic changes mentioned by >>5331569 are more than enough reason to prefer the PS version. Same reason I prefer Tomb Raider on PS rather than Dreamcast.

Can just install on Win 7, only thing you want is to download the 60fps dll file.

GOG version works more or less fine. It fixes the Win7 FMV bugs and is pretty stable.
I just wish that whoever came up with a PC port realized that fucking mouse exists. But that's the bane of all PS1 to PC ports.

And what are the chances that GOG will finally get the rights to rerelase Blood Omen 1? That is a fine game that requires more recognition.

Isn't the soundtrack messed up in the PC version? Like it doesn't have all the music or something?

IIRC, there's an issue with some controllers. If you play on keyboard, there shouldn't be any problems.

I prefer the PSX version for its overall aesthetics. The only thing the DC really has going over the PSX version is draw distance.

It never released on the PSX. Although I do recall a Ps1 version you might be mistaking? DC version is really good, but so is pc.

W10 fixed every issue previous windows versions had. Including controller issue.

It doesn't have interactive midi music. It's just tracks with no gameplay cohesion. When you see Kain a specific track related to him is supposed to play which is a remix of the main theme, but it never does on PC, because it simply doesn't exist.

I've played GOG version using Logitech RumblePad 2, but I'm not sure if xinput controllers are going to work.

I prefer the PC version. Run it on period correct hardware with a good video card and it's awesome.

Crystal Dynamics didn't put any thought on the PC port though, that's why it's ass and shouldn't be recommended ever. It's missing features on both the graphical and sound side.

example of the aesthetic changes?
i know kain and raziel have new models but i thought that was it

The music isn't dynamic like the console versions and the sound effects suffer from really bad crackling and stuttering glitches on modern systems. The GOG version still has these problems because nobody knows how to fix it.

That's also why a lot of games from then give us the option of choosing resolutions way above 1920 x 1080?

>> No.5337764

This is one of the games in the Dreamcast's library which has infinite internal resolution upscaling when emulating, and that is the best way to play this game.
