I've never played the original Dune.

But I did have Dune: The Battle for Arrakis for the Sega Genesis, and it was basically a 16-bit home point of Dune II. The game is basically proto-C&C with the Dune storyline and setting. It plays well for a Genesis attempt at a RTS game, and has an awesome Klepacki soundtrack. But the game is still much better on DOS and the modern C&C fan engines.

Even its adherence to Dune lore is pretty loose. The Ordos especially feel just like a generic sci-fi faction.

The Dune games were never close to the books, though. That's especially obvious with all the contemporary-style weaponry your troops are fighting with. They were based primarily on the movie (although it's not too faithful to that, either), with the Ordos being taken from a couple houses mentioned in the Dune Encyclopedia. Then, after Westwood lost the Dune license, they decided to create a spiritual successor to the Dune 2 with their own original IP. That's where the harvesters and Tiberian Sun's carryalls came from.

I can't say I'm that big of a fan of Emperor, but David Arkenstone's Harkonnen music was great:

Holy fuck you weak, sleeping baby. How do those khazar milkers taste btw? Alright, let's take a look at any progressive social issue across the years; it is always normalized in sitcoms, movies, and music coincidentally just a few years before any social issue is accepted. People turn off their brain and absorb information if they've had a hard day at work and just want to watch their favorite evening show or pop in a movie. And when they drive to work they mindlessly take in pop song lyrics and repeat them in their head throughout the day; do you think having yourself in a perpetual internal chant wont affect your thoughts eventually? It's called "programming" for more than one reason. You can make a joke of it all you want, but by remaining a sheep you end up a useful idiot until you actually think with that withering brain of yours. And it's not REALLY about it being either offensive or offended anyway; it's about dealing with annoying, faggot invalids who hate the west so much that they are willing to chop their dick off and murder babies up until birth just to get one over on God. It's all pathetic, and obviously not true if it has to be forced so strongly

Same here. I just treat them like pulp novels that make for enjoyable light reading. Sure, they might not be completely true to the universe or and have slightly more depth than a kiddie pool, but I don't really get the rabid hatred for them from people who probably read young adult novels that aren't much different in terms of execution.

Atreides at least get sonic tanks, and the Fremen palace ability is alright. The Ordos get the nearly worthless saboteur ability and are stuck with deviators in place of rocket launchers. Rocket launchers can only be ordered from the starport. The raider trikes are nothing to write home about, either.

I haven't beaten the game as the Harkonnens, but considering that they get devastators, rocket launchers, and the death hand missiles they've got to be the strongest faction.
