Considering some of the posts last thread and the one before it, I'm just going to throw this out here and link it to the news post. If you're using a mod and shit's broken, check which version of GZDoom you're using. If it's 3.7.x, try another version if possible, and report the bug if it's not in the other version. 3.7.x seems to have totally fucked up a bunch of stuff so if you're playing older mods and getting strange issues it's best not to use it.

"Vasya" is a short name for "Vasily", and "Vasyan" is a mocking nickname that usually means some random untalented guy no one cares about.

"Vasyanstvo" means "hack job", and in case of mods it either means that the mod is done poorly, with bad design choices, riddled with bugs, makes you cringe after playing for 5 minutes, or it's hard just for the sake of being hard. In most cases of mods, it's both.

Weapon models that are not only ugly, but also cover much more space than original ones even if you use centered view

Some anons asked me to tell them how to get the QC SSG. Posted in the last thread right as it died so here you go:

https://send.firefox.com/download/d1070a4570/#eIie8ZvUse6eMJlZ-kHZZA

https://send.firefox.com/download/0817735d41/#isI8CprWVUG7kLu9reoyyg

Here are the models themselves. When it comes to Quake modding their are 2 weapon model types. The ground model that rotates (g_weaponname) and the model the player sees when the item is picked up (v_weaponname). In this case the weapons names for the QC SSG are g_shot and v_shot2. You'll notice I named the g version g_shot2. This is because of how Arcane Dimensions is set up. That being said, the easiest way to get the QC SSG in game is to look for a progs folder in any Quake mod file. For example: with AD you would go ad>progs>and then copy and paste the file names as they are currently labeled.

However, for something that DOESN'T run off the AD mod, you would need to RENAME the g version to g_shot. That just be how it do.

Now let's say you don't wanna worry about any type of non-AD mods and just want it to be in any mod automoatically. You need a pak viewer. I would recommend QUARK (http://quark.sourceforge.net/download.php)) or PakScape (https://gamebanana.com/tools/2548).). Once you open either, go into the PAK0 file in your Id1 folder. Go to progs. Delete g_shot and v_shot2 and import the QC SSG versions. You Gucci now.

BUT, it doesn't stop there. For some reason in Quakespams the QC SSG has a retarded kick that makes the animation look like ass. To fix this you will need Blender. Not just Blender, but a way to edit the Quake .mdl file types (https://en.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Import-Export/Quake_mdl).). From there you will have to dick around with the rotations and the individual frames. Frame 2 and 3 were the biggest pains in the dick for me. Maybe you'll find a way to make it all look super sexy in your own way.

IIRC basically told the computer to only redraw pixels which actually changed, so you didn't have the computer put memory and processing into redrawing things like a solid blue sky, instead only redrawing say, the clouds or the line of mountains in the background, as well as the objects on screen.

Basically, if a pixel wasn't changing color (so, changing a pixel from sky blue to the same sky blue, or from black to black), no power would be exerted on redrawing that. There was also some buffering techniques involved, but I don't remember the specifics of them.

the Quake community is much more focused in mapping, since the engine has some particular quirks that make more extensive modding a pain in the ass, not counting the extra work of creating new 3D assets instead of sprites

>Hitscan is bad game design
This is true though, for games that have hitscan enemies and non-regenerating health. The only reason it was used in the past was because simulating a real bullet would have been way too taxing. It's not gamebreaking, but it does lead to bullshit scenarios where you can be sniped from 10000000000 units away by a pixel just because you failed an RNG roll and have no opportunity to react. Now that PCs are strong enough, super fast projectiles are the way to go. It still forces you to break LoS and stay further away but it doesn't rely solely on RNG to do so.
Plus it's way more intimidating to be able to see all the bullets flying at you.

Well if you're really into some fucking terrible garbage you can make what I like to call "delayed hitscan" where the projectile hitscans itself forwards a bit every frame and only uses the hitscan for collision, but I'm pretty sure Jesus said something about not doing that.

Do it.

It's a good game, goes a in a few different directions from the original, some which I disagree with (no Arch-Viles, new soundtrack), some which people like, even better than the original. However, overall, the gameplay is still very much Doom, with a little bit of Quake sprinkled on top, so it's a good romp.

A lot of people disregarded it back in the day, because they assumed it was just another port of Doom like most the others, when it actually has all new levels, graphics, and audio, being practically a new game.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring and say that hitscan should be used with humans, because unlike computers Human Error is always going to be a thing. However for AI where aim is more RNG than anything, it's better for there to be projectiles. Not only for the aforementioned reason of AI's aim being more RNG based instead of Human-Based Error, but also that it's more fun to dodge projectiles than to break LoS. To prove my point, is Doom's gameplay more fun than CoD's? Most sane people would say "yes." Why is that? Because Doom has an unhinged, breakneck speed. If >90% of the attacks were hitscan in Doom, and the AI had decent aim, the game would become a pop-shoot-hide sluggish march to the end, as opposed to actual Doom, where movement is key to survival.

Hitscanners are still valuable to Doom's enemy roster, the important thing is they're used in moderation. Just like if an enemy roster is comprised of nothing but hitscanners, a roster comprised of nothing but projectile bastards can be boring too.

Exactly, you walk into a room full of imps, you immediately already know what to do and can just autopilot them to death.
You walk into a room with an imp a few chaingunners, suddenly you need to think of how you're gonna handle this and do it in a hurry otherwise you're gonna get perforated.

if(!IsPointerEqual(AAPTR_TRACER, AAPTR_NULL))
{
A_GiveInventory("yourtokennamehere", 1, AAPTR_TARGET);
}

Also have an inventory item to use as the token, then you can just do whatever with the token item, either checking if the player has it or have it be a CustomInventory item that does something

I didn't actually check if that code works but I think it should
The projectile/puff checks if its tracer field isn't null, then sends a token item to its target (which would be its owner)

Mag(magazine) is a thing that contains ammunition, that you attach to a gun, and a gun chambers rounds from the magazine to fire them.

Clip is a device that holds ammunition so you could load the ammunition into the magazine or a weapon compartment faster than manually putting in each bullet.

Weapon can not chamber rounds from the clip

You can argue that a gun like M1 Garand can take clips and fire from them, but you'd be wrong - since you insert aforementioned clip into a magazine compartment, so the gun still takes the round from the magazine.

mags arent "clipped" they are loaded. You can load them by hand (by putting one bullet at a time), with a special machine, or with a help of a clip (after that clip is often discarded).
In Doom you presumably take mags from the rifles that zombies carry, with whatever ammo left after they tried to shoot you.
>And clips aren't bullets themselves, but the black thing that holds them + the bullets
clip is a clip even without the bullets
Same as a mag is still a mag, even when it's empty.
Except making a mag that can reliably feed the ammo is much more expensive (and requires more precise machinery) than make a clip, that is essentially is just a strip of metal, bent in a way to catch the rim of a bullet's cartridge.

Your argument is
>And if someone isn't into guns, he doesn't care about knowing the gun types and their ammo types.
But if you're playing and discussing a video game that's focused on exclusively using guns and weapons you can't expect to not have aligned interests and the topic of the matter brought up.

Forget that you don't even care about the distinction, wouldn't it just be more convenient to learn the difference so the people actually interested in weapons don't jump on you like this again?

Sort of, but not quite.
Some magazine types will contain the clip (the American M1, and the French Berthier Model 1907/16, both using something called Mannlicher clips, or 'en-bloc' clips), but most magazine types which can be fed by clips, have you just fit the clip on the top of an open action (generally fitting into a guiding slot) to push the rounds from the clip into the fixed magazine, or use an attachment to push them into a detachable magazine, then you remove the clip from the gun or magazine, and the magazine is loaded.

Clips aren't generally used too much by most people these days though, because they were more a solution for back in the day when it was cheaper and easier to make just one good magazine and fixing it to the gun, and then you could make a bunch of cheap and simple to make metal (or even cardboard) clips, which had no real mechanical function of their own. It was harder and more expensive to make magazines back then, basically, so clips made a lot of sense in that day and age.

All that said, unless you're shooting an old gun, you generally don't deal all that much with clips. A fair few enthusiasts do enjoy old guns, but for practical purposes, more modern guns which use detachable magazines will be preferred.

If you use the word clip around an enthusiast, some will sperg a bit, others will get that you said the wrong thing but understand what you mean, while laymen wont know the difference.

Well, sometimes you can, depends on your present company.

>Forget that you don't even care about the distinction, wouldn't it just be more convenient to learn the difference so the people actually interested in weapons don't jump on you like this again?
I mean, it could, but most people wouldn't care, and personally I think gun people should take the distinction less seriously outside of more focused and important contexts and situations.

I mean, it really doesn't actually matter that Doom calls magazines clips, because it's Doom. I think a far more egregious misuse of terms is "Chaingun", which Doom's machinegun isn't (and unlike clips and magazines, where there's some blurring of lines, Gatling guns and chain guns are very distinctly different). And it still doesn't matter, because of the kind of game that Doom is, and they just called it a chaingun because they thought that sounded metal.

>So the zombies in Doom drop already pre-clipped mags?
You could say that. Most magazines can also be loaded with individual rounds by hand, clips just make it faster, which makes sense if the magazine is fixed to the gun and you need to reload faster.
It's just that these days, detachable magazines are easy and common place, so instead of loading clips in advance to be able to rapidly reload a single fixed magazine, people just load the detachable magazines in advance.

That said, Doom has a very Lived In Future kind of style to it, with a lot of things and equipment in the setting which come off as oddly dated and old fashioned, compared to some of the rather advanced technology (teleporters, plasma guns), so it wouldn't be inconceivable that somewhere, clips are still seeing pretty common use, the UAC might even use stripper clips to preload detachable magazines (which some militaries IRL still do).

>And clips aren't bullets themselves,
Yes.

>but the black thing that holds them + the bullets
Well, a clip can be empty, in which case you can put more rounds on it, and use the clip to load a magazine faster than loading each round by hand.

Oh yeah, just need to tell you another thing, if you get an M1 in .30-06 Springfield, make sure it has an adjustable or vented gas plug fitted, as the M1 was made for the M2 Ball loading, which is lighter in pressure than many typical modern commercial loadings of .30-06.

The barrel and receiver of the M1 can handle some pretty hefty pressures, but the operating rod is only meant to travel up to a certain speed, and a fair amount of modern commercial ammo will result in way too much gas, working the operating rod way too fast.
What this can cause is for the rot to fairly quickly bend, crack, and worse, it can seriously batter the receiver of the gun. This can happen in less than one loaded magazine.
An adjustable or vented gas plug makes sure that there's never too much gas, and without one, you would best stick to either old M2 Ball surplus ammo, handloading your own ammo, or commercial ammo specifically marked as safe for M1 Garand rifles.

With an M1 built or converted for .308 Winchester, this is not as much as a problem, as typical loadings in this caliber are pretty closely comparable to the old M2 Ball .30-06 loadings.

Also, if you have no experience with them, the proper loading procedure has you holding the operating rod in place with the palm of your hand when the gun locks open and asks for a new clip. As the action will slam closed when a clip is inserted all the way, your palm will hold the action open until you've inserted the clip, and you will avoid the gun biting your hand, which can hurt.

The term doesn't even really bug me anymore, I have an SKS and a K98 that both use clips, and although I know the specifics of the difference between the two, I don't mind people using them interchangeably. Clips are almost all but phased out of modern firearm design, so much so that if you were to call a magazine a clip, I'd just accept it as slang, unless you specifically told me this gun uses an actual clip and not a mag.

Also, technically gun is also the wrong term for a lot of firearms, typically referring to large caliber weapons mounted on platforms (IE, tank gun, or ship guns), but it won't bother me if someone calls a rifle a gun. It's just a catch-all slang term.

I think Darkplaces is great, so long as you're playing maps that are made specifically for it. When you just try to throw anything Quake into it, it starts to break down due to slight changes in physics or rendering.

Honestly, some parts of ATM are genuinely *very* anemic, I beefed up the assault rifle and gave it a nicer sound, and I also eliminated the corkscrew trajectory of the rocket launcher (which doesn't miraculously fix it, but it makes it less awful).
I also boosted the damage on the pistol, revolver, and minigun, as they felt weak. The double barrel shotgun just felt awkward and unsatisfying to the point that I never used it if I could help it.

I like the pump shotgun a lot, the rapid fire and aiming with the rifle (once you give it a better sound, up its damage, and remove that every other skip it does), and that it reloads fast, the minigun feels pretty good but doesn't do quite as much damage as it ought to.
The BFG is kind of good, and the sledgehammer is very nice with berserk.

I kind of like some of the monster changes as well. The aesthetics and some of the sounds are some of the stronger parts, and I always felt they were a good match for Back To Saturn X.

DAKKA, it's really just that - same weapons, but they are graphically tweaked, shoot faster (and with more effects) and have fun altifres that do not change the weapon's role.

In that case, .22mag usually refers to .22 (Magnum), a heavier loaded round of ammunition in caliber .22. This is in contrast to what most people consider standard .22 rounds, .22 LR (Long Rifle), which are significantly smaller, despite the bullet having the same diameter.

When dealing with firearm cartridges, there's some overlap between caliber sizes, such that some rounds require more specifics to correctly notate. For instance, .30/06 rounds, 7.62x39mm, and 7.62x55r are all .3 inches in diameter for the bullet but all have different loads and are used in different rifles (Such as the Garand, the SKS/AK, and the Mosin Nagant/RPK).

My problem with Dakka is that not only is the weapon play faster, but that it ramps up Doomguy's powerlevel waaaaay super high.

You basically need to pair it with Colourful Hell or something of the sort to keep it challenging, otherwise it feels like you breeze through everything - which might be the intent, if the mod's goal is to act more as an arcade thing where you mix kills up to maximize your score, so the point isn't "Will you make it to the end of the level" but "How stylishy can you complete the level"

>> No.5334254

that's exactly the intent of dakka. it's meant to make super hard maps more approachable, make slaughtermaps actually fun, and encourage going rambo and running headfirst into nasty situations rather than taking it slow, because that's how I like to do it. but at the same time, the weapons were designed to all do damage in different ways and with different shapes, to encourage you to still pay close attention to what's going on and maximize the value of your weaponry (and your score).

so yeah, you're super powerful, but in a way that still keeps you engaged with what's going on. that was my intention, anyway.

Bethesda's latest release of the Reaper Minis came to my doorstep today. There are a few differences between these and the original release.
>new minis are made of the same material as the Doom 3 releases, meaning a darker color than the originals
>copyright date is 2013 instead of 1996 for the originals, or 1993-1997 for the Doom 3 release
>certain minis have been glued together. the cacodemon is all one piece instead of three like the original
>glued minis mean that there are no seams. a pro for those not planning to paint them, a con for those looking to, especially on the insides

Here's a interesting bit about passing Q1 or Q2 textures or even sprites through Gigapixel or Nvidia gameworks
Mark the badly converted areas 1st with brush/pencil ,and later using Gaussian blur + color brush sob reposition makes the AI add more detail and even look better than the original

The OG Q2 widow's face is a complete mess, so i managed to add a bit more detail to the eyes and mouth area(coloring the teeth with grey/white) area, making the AI recognize it well.

The secret is picking the original texture and adding more detail on the most affected areas before passing through the AI, so the damn thing can work on it without screwing the details.

sharpening and other stuff is useful too.

>Find the Quake 2013 Advent Calendar on Quaddicted
>One guy recommends the map "The Middle Evil" as an older, uniquely textured map.
>Don't read the rest of the article's warning, just download and hop in.

>Confronted by two knights at start, no biggie, shotgun them down.
>Very dark areas add atmosphere, but always contain something nasty, in the start's case, ogres.
>Hit some switches and open the main gate, clear out a side area first just in case there's a weapon there.
>Main section of the map has four patrolling shamblers, and by this time, I'm down to three shells left with no other guns.
>There's shells in the main area, but you have to sneak through their patrol routes to pick them up if you want to engage, and there's not enough ammo in each box to take them down.
>Wind up having to axe four shamblers with the shambler-dance to death to continue on to an even more sparse ammo area.
>Finally discover you're suppose to keep enemies alive and use monster infighting to soften them up.

I mean, it's a cool idea, but I don't think it works all that well in practice, most of the enemies get stuck on their pathing in their own individual areas such that you can't get them to kill each other.

What is the most challenging (in a fair way) map in the original DOOM games and why is it MAP10 - Refueling Station by Tom Hall (and finished by Sandy Peterson)?

Is Ancient Aliens best played vanilla, or do you prefer seasoning yours with gameplay mods? A-la Faspons, Final Doomer, HND, etc...

>> No.5335145

>>5335138
AA is best with vanilla IMO, nothing that changes enemies plays well with it and weapon sets are usually OP enough to screw the balance. The AA set in FD is really nice but it makes the maps too easy.

>> No.5335149

>>5335145
Honestly Faspons doesn't strike me as too OP for it, specially with the added enemy attacks, enabling the fast enemy projectiles (so it's basically UV Fast) and reloading

>> No.5335158

>>5335149
The problem is that it doesn't replace the new enemies. AA's maps have somewhat delicate balance too, so changing enemies might make stuff harder than it needs to be,

Skillsaw really likes to straddle the line between "fun" and "annoying" in encounters, and expects them to be tackled in specific ways. When you change enemies, you change those dynamics, which can break stuff. It's especially visible in AA in my opinion, when compared to valiant at least.

What is your stance on Quicksaving and Quickloading in DOOM?

Excluding outlier cases of extremely difficult WADs, should all levels be solved as a puzzle from back to back, are you okay at having "checkpoints" of sorts (ie, when you pick up a key for example), or do you go full blown past-Joel (I don't know if he still does his quicksave thing every 30 seconds) ?

>> No.5335334

>>5335332
Depends on the wad. The key solution is good for big maps, yeah. I like doing the full iron man thing. One life and that's it. Don't play for a while when I finally die/finish. Keeps things fresh. Something like that.

>> No.5335340

>>5335332
Generally, I don't like the quicksave/quickload function as I feel like it cheapens gameplay. I think it should be included for its usefulness, but every level should be based around being completed from map transition to finish without saving and loading.

Quicksave/quickload is great for a practice tool though, letting you retry difficult parts over and over again until you get them down, at which point you should be able to go from beginning to end without them. It's essentially save states from console emulators.
