I'm happy about that even if I'll never get to play it. So sick of seeing arcades be nothing but a tiny casino for kids or giant versions of mobile games you can get for free on your phone.

Are we even looking at the same video? The graphics look great. That's just what high definition simple graphics look like. They look clean and crisp.

I think the old graphics are still there in this version according to that website.

Well I might have exaggerated. I think the problem for me is that it's now in higher resolution but still has the same level of detail.
It may look really nice on a NES in 240p but it just looks kinda bland in HD...

To each their own, I guess, but I think it looks good and I wish more remakes/re-releases of old games did this much justice to the original while updating into higher resolutions.

I dunno, not the other anon, but I do think there's better ways to do it. Take the Wonder Boy remake, for example. You can absolutely add in more effects and take better advantage of modern tech without going completely overboard.
I do like the parallax effect on the BG clouds, though. That's nice.

>> No.5327707

>>5327695
That's a very good example and exactly what i meant.
If they put in the effort they could definitely make something more detailed without missing the original's art style and maybe they will since that is just a demo.
I just hope i'll somehow get to play it at some point.

I guess that's a running theme with Gimmick, especially outside of japan, though.

A lot of Japanese developers don't care about the rest of the world. They have a strong sense of national pride and even the Japanese developers that release games internationally often focus first and foremost on Japan with every other version being an afterthought. Arcades are still popular in Japan (Tekken 7 was arcade only for like 2 years), this will probably be successful there, that's all they really care about.

I honestly had my doubts hearing about this last night but Once I watched the video, I'm glad Gimmick is finally given a new life and a new audience. the arranged tracks aren't too shabby either. I enjoy the original, can beat it with ease and would love to get my hands at it, yet that might prove to be pretty difficult. Anyways, we'll have to see how things turn out.

>>5329527
Just because you're naming a bad example for a visual overhaul doesn't mean there's no good way to pull it off. I enjoyed the original game's graphics, hell i even think they're some of the best on the console but 1:1 redrawn NES graphics just look kind of too plain in hd.

It's not uncommon for arcade games to use those types of fonts for the score, what are you on about?

Look at the HUD icons. If you love this so much, explain why they are pixel art. The style is inconsistent and lacks cohesion, so it ends up looking like garbage. They could have went many directions with this, from clean flat style to fucking yarn like kirby. Instead they went pixels mixed with smooth shader look and ended up with a mess.

>> No.5331101

>>5330901
The pixel art HUD elements are clearly a nod to the game's NES roots. They look fine and the blocky style of them also clearly differentiates the HUD from the rest of the game, which is useful when the HUD overlaps the playable space like that.

>> No.5331170

It looks better than I thought it would but it's still very inconsistent and you can tell it's up-scaled, in a bad way. Still I'm glad Mr. Gimmick gets some kind of love and I can't shit on it too much because it's arcade-only and I would pay to play it.

Looks like a shoddy port instead of a true "remake" or anything similar. Yeah, could probably get the same effect just using an upscaler in an emulator.

The music is fucked too, it sounds like a bad Genesis fan-remix.

What? The original had perfectly tight controls.
