If they're smart about how they manage their development efforts / costs going forward then it stands a reasonable chance of being good. Looks a little on the dark + bloomy side but "cyberpunk neon" is a decent choice of reinterpretations for the old SS1 art assets. Which engine was it they were using again, Unreal or Unity? I know that decision was probably down to "which one does our programming guy know how to use" but I'm really kind of hoping that's not Unity.

I don't have high hopes. When you polish out all the clunkiness of the original, you aren't really left with much. I can understand why they wanted to do a reboot, because a straight remaster is going to end up feeling very superficial.

> When you polish out all the clunkiness of the original, you aren't really left with much.

AKA the Resident Evil problem.

Normies hate cumbersome controls, but the second you streamline them, you're running around like a supersoldier and the horror aspect is gone.

>> No.5318386

>>5318161
System Shock's Enhanced Edition already has that problem. By improving the controls and adding mouselook, combat is quickly trivialized because the enemies just weren't designed around the player being so fast.

That said, horror wasn't really the focus in SS1. Nightdive really want to make it more like SS2 in that regard.

>> No.5318454

nice but where's the massive HUD?

More importantly, will it have VR support? SS was basically a VR game before VR existed, I'd love to see it rendered as such. Probably won't be though, shame.

The new look doesn't work for me.
Those old 3d spaces and level design were more abstract than realistic. All those shiny new materials, effects and the lighting seem out of place.
It's like using ultrarealistic graphics in Minecraft.

They were on track with the remake, then some time later scrapped everything they had up to that point, fired the dev team, hired another team, changed the engine, and then decided "we are going to do a reboot of the series using Deus Ex Human Revolution as inspiration and using System Shock 2's system as a starting point" before going completely silent for nearly two years before slowly trickling info out back in october. All of this happened even though they used up all the kickstarter money somewhere along the way and people were happy the original planned remake was being very faithful to the original.

They really don't. Night Dive studio gets by through old IP acquisitions and then rereleasing them on modern systems, usually by employing an already existing fan patch/mod they may or may not be paying the creator money to use. Actual game development is pretty much entirely lost on them, I've been following the remake kickstarter and pretty much nobody that was hired before then had any real game dev knowledge or experience, they pretty much made a team just for the remake, and the first lead dev they originally had was a youtuber who made a bunch of tf2 fan models and videos. Really I should've seen the warning signs before forking over $40 to back it but I was lured in too easily by what-ifs

Lookin' good so far. I'm glad that they seem to have moved away from incorporating a bunch of fucking waiting for watching your character move his hands all around the place when he picks up items. Hopefully they don't add those back in.
I like that the names of stuff you're looking at is displayed on the HUD like the original, although I dunno about the distance they've decided on where it doesn't work.
I think the fog might be a bit excessive, but I guess it could be a lore thing that Shodan's shut off the heating because the mutants don't need it and it makes the robots run more efficiently.
Overall lookin' good. Let's hope they don't fuck it up once they program the actual game part of it.

I think that even in the original System Shock 1, Tri-Optimum had its people doing substantially questionable-downright vile things, and not just experiments. Example: Edward Diego's monetary fraud and/or financial misdeeds that were part of the charges being brought against him by major courts.

>> No.5323941

>>5323832
It was Trioptimum itself that was investigating Diego. The whole reason the story in SS1 kicks off is because he wanted to misuse Trioptimum resources on the station. There was certainly no out-right villainy.

The company gets much shadier in SS2, but that's because they get bought out by a black market arms dealer after the Citadel ruined the company.

I really would prefer if these weren't in the game, but I suppose it somewhat explains how Shodan was able to make mutie machines. Not that it needed any explaining past "She had quite a long time to build them while the protagonist was in cryo sleep" but I'm sure someone was upset by it. I don't think it really harms the lore that much as long as they clearly say that Trioptimum only experimented on test tube babies, not human captives, and didn't get very far on their own.

My guess is that they're trying to explain why the mutants and cyborgs never attacked each other. In the original, the mutated crew were supposed to be behaving wildly and should have been just as hostile to Shodan's forces. Instead mutants and cyborgs all chilled together and only went for the player.

Whereas some of the first concept art released for the remaster suggested the mutants were now produced by Triop as workers. And if they're designed to carry out orders, it means they can say Shodan took control of them along with everything else on the station.
