So, what emulator handheld does /vr/ recommend?
I'm thinking in a PSP or the smartphone xperia play.
I have a good smartphone but it's shitty to play with touchscreen.

A PSP is really great for older systems.
http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/Recommended_PSP_Emulators

It can do almost perfecty:
NES
Game Boy/Color
Game Boy Advance
Sega Master System
Game Gear
Sega Genesis/Megadrive
Sega CD
Atari 2600

That alone gives you a choice of around 8000+ unique games, most of which will fit on a single 16G microSD (though the Sega CD and GBA games can be a bit bulky).

It does fall rather short in emulating SNES. Pretty much every emulator so far is a hack of a port of Snes9x. It suffers slowdowns, glitches, freezes, etc. The best at the moment is Snes9xTYLcm 0.4.2 Mod Rev.11 but it doesn't support suspending the system. So if you require better SNES play, you'll probably want something more dedicated.

Well, i have a PSP Fat but it has tons of technical issues.
>no sound
>video fails sometime
>buttons just don't work
I don't know how to fix and i don't know people who knows.
One alternative i have is buying one of that gamepads for android and use with my smartphone.

Well, you can sometimes get a used PSP-1000 in pretty good condition for about the same price as one of those Android gamepads.

In my experience, which is from several years ago, the Nintendo DS can do Genesis and NES very well, and even Neo Geo. The PSP can run PSX games, SNES, NES, and Genesis (tolerably).

My BlackBerry Z10 can do Gameboy * and PSX without issue, and play PSP games slooooooowwwwwlllllyyyyyy.

I like the PSP emulators for their wide range of features. For the set of emulators I am using, all support multiple save slots. There is rewind support for NES/SMS/GG/Genesis/SegaCD. Fast forward support for GB/GBC/NES/SNES. There are a lot of video options (scale, zoom, stretch, 1:1) for most of them as well. Here are the ones I use:

PSP2600
SMSPlus
MasterBoy
NesterJ
picodrive (1.35b R)
Snes9xTYL
gpSP

The few DS emulators I tried were very minimal.

If I hadn't given my TopToyDS card to a friend before finding that they were ALL GONE, NO MORE, BUH-BYE, I'd be able to name the emulators I used with it. The NES emulator I used had rewind capabilities. Neato.

I would be amazed if no one has done that yet.

Hell, if I had the technical know-how I would put that thing into a modified original Gameboy, 4 buttons, somehow get shoulder buttons on there, and just blow minds everywhere.

The DS CAN emulate, but why? You'd be downscaling the output to fit the DS screen.

I'd say PSP and/or Android phone, for sure, if not emulating on PC or console (e.g. Wii).

I've heard nothing but good about it.
Basically, get custom firmware for it, tweak things, and you've got the perfect on-the-go emulating machine.

It's notably pricier than getting a PSP and what you need to emulate on that, however.

I use my Xperia Play to play all the games. It plays pretty much every SNES game except like Doom. Every N64 except like Conker's Bad Fur Day. And PS1 games are surprisingly smooth, even though the ISOs are massive (which is why I have a 32gb micro in the phone).

But I get the feeling PSP is a lot better overall for emulating, but I can't say for sure because I've only used my Xperia Play for emulating ;p I've also never run into a problem with the phone for the almost 2 years I've had it, except Sony screwing us all over with the ICS tease.

>> No.536143

>>536087
Yeah, I love my Xperia Play too. PSXPeria (injecting ISOs into official Sony PS1 emulator) is great when the emulator supports it. It's weird that doom doesn't run full speed, everything else does including Yoshi's Island, Star Fox, etc.

What's the best emulator for MSX systems?

>> No.536162

>>536143
I use the new ePSXe emulator for my PSX games, which seems to be working really smooth so far.

Does Doom also not run for you? I had thought originally it was an emulator issue, but maybe it's a phone issue... Or the ROM in its entirety because I do know Doom was a heavy game for the SNES.

I just wish I could play Conker's Bad Fur DAy :P

>> No.536181

>>536162
It runs for me in SNESoid, you just have to enable the C core in the settings (which you have to do for all SuperFX and SA1 games). It just runs at about half speed. Like I said, no problems in any other SuperFX or SA1 games.

>> No.536210

Why is picodrive such a piece of shit? My analog stick flies all over the place of its own accord. Luckily enough my CFW allows me to disable it when playing games, but it seems like picodrive doesn't count itself as a game. Also, when you try and remove analog stick control from the control mapping, you have to erase the d-pad button also associated with it, and guess what? you can't set the up or down directions because you use those to navigate through the menus and they didn't bother to put in input confirmation

>> No.536291

The Xperia was great at the time but is now immensely underpowered. Single core and 512MB of RAM doesn't cut it for smartphones anymore, things run amazingly slow. Also only has 512MB of internal storage, and many system apps cannot be put on SD, even by rooting. I have about 30MB of space left and a notification that will not go away telling me so. Plus it is only upgradable to ICS through CyanogenMod.

The gamepad is great and emulators work well, N64 is okay considering the state of N64 in general (basic shit like SMB64 works but 90% of everything is horrible) and exploiting Sony's PS1 emulator works most of the time.

I would recommend a JXD 7300b. 7'' Android tablet with relatively modern specs and gamepad. It's like $150. It's loaded with Chinese shit though but there's custom firmware for it.
