So I've been wondering, why did Capcom decide to go back to pre-rendered backgrounds, when the original Dino Crisis proved they could do a great looking game with fully rendered environments? Not only did RE3 after this continue the pre-rendered trend, but Dino Crisis 2 opted for that as well. I get that rendering a jungle back on the PS1 wasn't exactly feasible, but they could have changed the setting.

They wanted to push the limits of the PSX, simple as that.

Even upscaled and smoothed via emulator, that doesn't look nearly as detailed as anything from a Resident Evil game

That's not what those backgrounds looked like at all, either.

Still too high res. Nice try, though.

>> No.5323062

Rendered backgrounds especially in the PS1 era only make sense for games with actual camera movement.
When its static prerendered should be the obvious choice because it looks so much better.

I said that's the FUCKING background. Maybe the PS1 displayed it at a lower res compared to the PC version, but that's basically what it looks like. What you showed in Dino Crisis is just a flat wall that you think looks good because it's running at a higher res with smoothed textures.

because they wanted to create creepy and atmospheric environments

That's not a showcase of the game's graphics, I was using it to display the game at hand, not to show what it could do. For the most part the game looks pretty good considering the time, they could have pulled it off with resident evil.
The problem here is that you're trying to change the subject.

Didn't Dino Crisis come after RE? If so probably better understanding of the system and hardware.

RE:CV was suppose to be the third game, so they were already moving forward with 3D backgrounds, and you already answered why they did it wit Crisis 2.

>> No.5323192

Dino Crisis takes place in a facility with plain, flat walls and hallways.
Resident Evil 3 takes place in a wrecked city full of debris and non-geometric shapes.

According to RE3's director the game that would become RE3 which was just called "The Last Escape" was going to be a test bed for ideas on how Capcom would go forward with their 3d "action games". Last Escape originally had the dodge mechanic and being able to run and shoot with certain weapons but they ended up taking the run and shooting out and porting it directly into Dino Crisis to test the idea of giving players better attacks against faster more aggressive enemies.

To that end Dino Crisis was also an experiment with full rendered backgrounds to be more conducive to run and gun gameplay.

The background artist were working on RE3, so they did Dino Crisis in 3D.

They coudln't hire another college student with an Amiga to replace him? I heard D's entire CGI backgrounds was made by one guy with an Apple computer.

That's far out of Amiga territory. All the RE stuff was done on SGIs.

Well show an example of Dino Crisis compared to Resident Evil (3 preferably, same year) that show how good Dino Crisis looks in comparison. I think you'll find that Resident Evil's backgrounds are much more detailed, which is what you would want for that kind of game.

The ps1 assets are lower res and more compressed compared to the other versions. I'd say the ps1 version looks more consistent because it doesn't have lower res overlays intermixed with the mostly higher res backdrops causing parts of the scenery to look blocky in areas here and there. Otherwise, the other version have the ps1 version stumped.

does anyone have a good guide to running Dino Crisis on modern PCs, like the Resident evil /vr/ guide

>> No.5327081

the bigger issue is that people thought it looked bland BECAUSE it wasnt prerendered.
the problem was 90% of Dino Crisis is boring ass grey hallways in a military research base.
offices / lounges/ briefing rooms/ labs/ outdoor areas /
all were pretty detailed and lived in. but most that is forgotten cause its all hallways and vents.

Having to actively direct the camera so that the player can see exactly what the devs want is something that i really miss about older titles with hard limitations. I've been playing RE2 and Parasite Eve back to back and there's some legitimately good directing going on.
