The first game is multiplat.

Zwei and Saga are legitimately good, I give you those, but they are not without their flaws. Zwei is too "cinematic" and has less intense shooting levels compared to the first game (the last boss is infinitely better however), and Saga can be maxed out in a weekend - not the length you'd expect from a 4cd game.

modchip is $25 off of ebay and is more reliable. Action Replay occupies the cart slot, so half the time it won't work, and even when it does, pseudo Saturn doesn't have full compatibility.

Yeah, it doesn't get around region coding, but you can patch games prior burning. There's also a region free bios which costs $5 but can be difficult to install without a heat gun to remove the old bios. But if you have a jap system, you are unlikely to need it anyway, unless you want to play the two or three RPGs worth playing on the Saturn (PDS, SF3...).

>> No.5326609

>>5326576
I definitely want to play the few rpgs for saturn, but it sounds like I can region patch them before burning. However I do have a rework station to change the bios. I'll look up a guide now.

>> No.5326630

>>5326609
Well if you want to play RPGs then you need the cart slot for saves, so you might as well go for the modchip. Action Replay doesn't let you save in-game, and the internal memory only holds 1-3 saves in most games. You have to boot the AR and use its menu to copy saves over, but if you do this it might corrupt the AR firmware (because the cart slot is so shit), and then your card ends up bricked.

Yeah, that can happen to save carts too, but then you can format the cart and go on, while for the AR you need to set up your machine for a swap trick so you can run a firmware flasher to restore the original firmware.

At which point you might as well just install a modchip and not worry about the AR kicking the bucket.

I don't even know if Pseudo even allows you to save, even in its own menu. The AR can, but you need it flashed to Pseudo to run backups.

And doing the save transfer onto the AR also assumes that the internal battery is still working right? If not, it isnt even possible i take it.
If I'm opening up the console to swap the bios and install a mod chip i might just swap the battery too. I think i might be okay with just the one or two saves at a time for now. I rarely revisit games/saves and only play one game at a time.

Thanks

>If I'm opening up the console to swap the bios and install a mod chip i might just swap the battery too.

The battery can be swapped without opening up the console, it's like swapping a battery in a calculator. You open up a door on the back and you can pop out the battery with your fingers.

Soldering a modchip only requires taking the top off. Also note that I recommend soldering to the 5V line on the CD Drive, not the power supply, the chips have spotty compatibility and doing this will greatly increase the chances of them working. It also allows for far neater cable management.

Swapping the bios requires full disassembly to gain access to the motherboard, plus you need a heatgun if you want to remove the chip without damaging traces on the motherboard.

He is right though. None of the arcade ports on the Saturn are actually "arcade perfect", most suffer from framedrops, wrong resolution, downscaled audio, missing frames, missing special effects, missing backgrounds, or completely downscaled in every way. Depending on whether we are talking about Street Fighter 2 or Darius Gaiden or Virtua Fighter 2.

Even the most simple stuff ported from STV have differences, mostly in audio quality. Radiant Silvergun is probably the only actually perfect "arcade perfect" conversion.

And it's overall still a good experience.

Yeah it sure as hell is lovely to play a Survival Mode with the game being downscaled and missing half its animation.

And most console ports don't allow for tweaking settings in the service menu, like the damage level in fighting games.

Arcade ports on the Saturn were only good for their time. Today, they are nearly useless, partially because of emulation, but partially because many games have significantly better ports now.

not really, stuff like dedicated VS mode is pretty good, instead of having to go to arcade mode > "a challenger appears!" >char selection screen every time you want to play VS.

>but partially because many games have significantly better ports now.
The thing with many moden ports is that they don't support SD resolutions.
I'm not saying Saturn arcade ports are the best or only way to play arcade games, but it's still a good option and it's not emulation.

MAME has cheats that give the second player infinite health, so once again, no reason to use inaccurate ports.

Silhouette Mirage is one of the cheaper games, you can get it for around $60 still (considering inflation, it costs less than it did when it came out). Radiant Silvergun has been $200 for the past ten years, but it's actually worth the cost since it's one of the best games on the system.

Taromaro is an EXTREMELY bad game, other than the graphics and its scarcity, it has nothing going for it. It's a trophy title, you might as well buy an iPhone instead - costs the same but marginally more useful.

Hyper Duel is an average shmup, if it wasn't made by Technosoft it would have nothing going for it. The transformation gimmick makes it pretty difficult and not too fun. And for its cost you could buy every Thunderforce and Parodius game on the Saturn, all of which are better games.
