I would argue that UT4 did get popular at one point and got a lot of attention, but just being in pre-alpha, and in some way, appealing to newer players even though they had a tutorial section. They didn't put enough resources behind it from the get go. What I'm saying is that the AI in Unreal doesn't actually take cover because it understands that you're shooting at it, it is straight scripted to run behind the same cover 100% of the time, or every time it gets within a certain range of a certain path node. Same with FEAR.
The botmatch AI in Unreal will make rudimentary decisions on whether to get health, ammo, etc, but they don't actually "see" the world around them. The AI in Unreal follows paths of breadcrumbs, and those breadcrumbs have a value in them that tells the AI how far off course they're allowed to travel to pick up items, or dodge or what not.

I guess it is pretty impressive for the time when games like Thief and Unreal have on par or better AI than games 20 years later (aside from running into walls or getting stuck bouncing between path nodes). I just wish someone was striving to write an AI that actually sees the world a bit more realistically and makes decisions based on that. Oblivion's radiant AI had a neat gimmick with the AI having needs, and making decisions based on that, but then they nerfed it in the end and we got a gimped version with more-or-less set schedules instead.

It has a bit of "been there, done that" vibe, some of the new weapons are a bit wonky, there aren't enough new enemies and Skaarj Warlord as a final boss AGAIN is a bit cheap, but overall I liked it.

I mean, I really like DOOM - it's actually quite impressive how well it holds up in the visceral "fun" departament for a game from 1993 and I learned to appreciate Quake 1 - although Quakes were always a bit too "edgy" for me - like an angry 90's kid decided to make a videogame. But Unreal 1 was always *the* FPS for me.

But I never understood the love of Half-Life. It was nowhere near as pretty as Unreal, it wasn't as visceral as Quake and IMO Unreal did the enviromental storytelling better. Not to mention the story, weapons and enviroments themselves were much more interesting in Unreal. I was just running around a grey science base with a shotgun shooting soldiers and aliens. I've seen it all before.
Half-Life was always as generic as it gets for me - especially compared to crazy levels of Quake 1 or Unreal. But to each it's own I guess.

They actually are, and that's what people love and connect with in them.

It's okay that Unreal isn't that popular, it's a game for a more specific niche audience, more complex and generous idea-wise product, that definitely made games as they are now, yet not so appreciated.

Nah, Unreal was much slower and more "contemplative" so to speak. Instead of throwing enemies at you (I think there are only two instances - ISV Karn and the Mothership when game throws shitton of cannon fodder at you) the fights were more like duels with elite and smart enemies.
And much more emphasis was put on puzzle-solving and exploration. And the story surpisingly enough.
Compared to Quake 1 "you are a lonely soldier, those are monsters from... somewhere, kill them all, don't ask questions" the entire story and backdrop from Unreal was very detailed with Prisoner 849 being either a chosen avatar of the Godess, or cynically using the beliefs of a primitive race to survive on a hostile planet. It was actually quite well written game.

>> No.5314062

Don't get me wrong - this edge works quite well in Quake 1 and it's Lovecraftian themes. It makes for an interesting backdrop. Not so much in Quake 2 IMO.

>definitely made games as they are now, yet not so appreciated.

I kinda find it amusing that Half-Life gets the praise for things Unreal did first.

>Half-Life had really smart enemies, that could cooperate, ambush and predict player movement.
Unreal did it first with the Skaarj - motherfuckers actually tried to zone the player with their projectiles. And their AI could read player keyboard input.
>Half-Life weapons introduced alternate fire.
Unreal did it first. And that included alternate fire combos like with ASMD and Eightball Gun.
>Half-Life introduced enviromental storytelling.
Unreal also did it first. It was just slightly more hamfisted about it with translator messages.

it's "zephon"
I'm trying to install this and the oldschool mod doesn't appearin the mod tab
I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Zephon requires you to have your Unreal Tournament game installed and patched to the latest version (version 436).
You also need oldskool to play Zephon which is included in the zip file. No additional bonus packs are required.

To install Zephon first make sure your Unreal Tournament game is patched to the latest version. To get the latest
patches please visit www.beyondunreal.com. After patching your game extract the oldskool239.zip file in the "Extras" folder to your Unreal Tournament folder.d file which can be found.
Finish your installation by unzipping the contents of the "projectzephon.zip" file into your Unreal Tournament directory (e.g. C:\UnrealTournament). All files should automatically be placed in their appropriate folders.

Every files should be installed this way :

".umx" in your "UnrealTournament/music" folder
".u" and ".int" in your "UnrealTournament/System" folder
".utx" in your "UnrealTournament/Textures" folder
".unr" in your "UnrealTournament/Maps" folder
".uax" in your "UnrealTournament/Sounds" folder
2. Getting Started

To play Zephon:

- go to the main menu inside your Unreal Tournament game,
- under the tab that says "Mods", first enable the "oldskool" mod,
- under options choose "OldSkool configuration -> SinglePlayer and uncheck "UT Minigun" (this is imporant, as Zephon doesn't provide ammo for this weapon!),
- choose "New Singpleplayer Game", select "Project Zephon" from the list of available packs, set your difficulty level and hit start.

What if you just take a model from somewhere else and import it into the game after jumping through the hoops?

>> No.5338692

>>5338438
>somewhere else
like what? Another game?
Milkshape supports a couple of older games. I guess at the worst you just get the mesh and would have to redo any animation and texture work. At best everything can be brought over as is with some tweaking. Even then it's a hassle, but I don't see any reason it shouldn't work.
There is some software on the oldrunreal website that converts *.3ds format into unreal actors with animation and textures, as long as you modify them to play nice with unreal. I have made a simple decoration like that. Had to mess around with the scripting for a bit(I don't know nothing 'bout coding, so i just copy pasted until it worked). No idea about animation or player/weapon models tho.

>high level UT was just ADADAD
>Quake Live is the greatest
Quite ironic considered UT has the dodge to throw in some variety during combat while in Quake there is literally nothing other than ADAD during combat since jumping is suicide against LG.
>too hitscan heavy
Quite ironic given that 2/3 of the most important weapons in QL are hitscan.

Oh but there's more. gzdoom now has zscript, which draws a lot of inspiration from unrealscript, and thanks to me it directly supports unreal's own .3d model format (which I've written a couple tools to extract/edit/export).

Straight up LG vs LG is rare in Quake Live because two really good players will normally come off about equal from such a battle. Usually one player has more of a stack, so it's rare to see them face off ADADAD like that. LG accuracy that sets one pro apart from another comes from other situations.

This is wrong. AI in FEAR actually understands what part of the map would give it cover or what routes to flank you without it being prescripted and actually makes moment to moment decisions on where to go because the AI programmers designed the maps which is why the level design is so boxy and simple.
The only thing fake in FEAR is the vocal communication.
