Tell me about your experience in retro game stores. Any good finds? Any interesting tales to tell?
I'm heading to Japan later this year and I'm hoping to spend a day or two jumping around all the old stores they have there.

Here's a clip from the Tokyo super potato retro video game store their prices are higher and they mostly cater to foreigners.

https://youtu.be/ujhFDz3zxhM

Just remember Neo Geo and sega Saturn stuff are getting rare in Japan.

>Super Potato
At least try, anon.
That place is known for inflating prices for baka gaijins.
There's this YouTube channel called KidShoryuken who actually shows the smaller and cheaper places for retro hunting.

HARD OFF is a cheaper used video game store in japan but you won't find a NWO GEO aes systems in those stores usually but their prices are fair and not inflated.

If you do go to japan can you fun some inventory in the used guitar stores.

I'm wondering if stuff like univox and token guitars are still in stock there.
.when I see videos of Japanese guitar stores they are filled with mostly modern stuff.

I'm trying to see if there's used guitar stores in Japan that sell 70's Japanese guitars like Greg's under the Japanese brands

Retro stores are a scam. You have more luck going to Goodwill or some other thrift store.

>go to my local goodwills (there's two of them)

The stores are good for collectors looking for stuff.
I don't think you will find a NEO GEO at a good will

But yeah if your collecting ps1 ps2 stuff goodwill is a good place to check.

I've been finding lots of Nintendo WII stuff at goodwill and other thrift shops.

A store like super potato sells NEO GEO consoles and SNES disk systems stuff you won't find at a thrift store in the U.S.

Oh I totally agree that if you NEED (read: are obsessed by) a certain game, you will find it there. But is it worth what they ask there? No, likely not.

>>5310621
I know the feeling, but I feel like it is a seasonal thing, a year ago my favorite local thrift store had a bunch of good retro games, like Ceasar II, but now they only have 20 copies of some EA sports game.
I heard in Goodwill's case it's because they started a second hand game store chain where all the normal Goodwills will send the games to. They still sell games for a very very good price there, from what I heard.

Oh also
>Pawnshops
I had some amazing finds in them, though some overprice their games severely.
Basically just try every place they sell secondhand stuff, you might find gems you weren't even looking for.

I also think some anons want to travel to japan and figure out why not visit a retro game store.
.
The big thing with this is most videos on YouTube show people buying stuff like ps1 games that are cheap on ebay.

I'd like are members of /retro/ to try bringing back rarer items.

Great places. When they get something amazingly rare in, I get first dibs on it at the price they paid for it if I do not already have it. They supply me with content for my channel and streams. Great people and places to support.

I live in Japan. It's pretty good.

Sometimes I visit retro video games stores or general stores that also have retro games to just feel the vibe and lament about how you fucking subhumans come in droves and buy everything out.

And more expensive than ebay prices with expensive shipping. Don't ever donate to goodwill, just give your games to some kid or offer it for free, or another thrift store.

They play like a charity so they can pay handicapped people $3 an hour as "interns" or "job training," all while paying nothing for their stock. Should be criminal.

My local EB had two of the coolest employees ever back in the early 00's. Got a free GameShark when I bought an import of Shenmue II because I didn't have a boot disk. They also sold me their personal Black Sports Edition DC after mine kicked the bucket.

No Japanese stores, but I've been to one of the retro shops in my town. It moved locations, and I've been to each location once
First location
>Big floor space
>Lots of selection
>Everything from Atari to PS3 (8th gen not out yet)
>Prices about on par with eBay prices for proper retro stuff though
>Zelda 1 Link rug in front of the register, neat
>Buy nothing
Second location
>Go there to waste time with my friend
>Floor space is absolutely tiny
>Worse location too
>Obviously moved because they couldn't afford their first place
>Many gaps in the shelves
>Nowhere near as many games as before
>More of a used game shop with retro games rather than a shop dedicated to older consoles
>Also an arcade cabinet with NES Punch-Out for some reason?
>Gameboy Micros for $99
>Don't remember much else other than the cool (as in color temperature, shit was almost teal) gray paint on the walls
>Buy $15 copy of Ground Zeroes for my stepdad
>Leave

Okay good to know. My roommate is going to Japan for a couple of weeks and asked me for a list of shit I might want. I'm having a hard time coming up with anything not NPB related, but had tentatively put a saturn on the list. I figured they'd be cheaper and in better condition than one I'd be likely to pick up here in the US. The only other things I could think of were gamecube controllers and maybe Umihara Kawase for sfc; even though I know that game has been memed into being expensive. It has to be cheaper than ebay over there. I'm not even going to ask him to look out for neo geo or pc engine because those are also probably insanely priced.

eBay prices don't necessarily reflect prices in Japan, even if it's from a Japanese seller. I got my PC Engine/CD-Rom2/IFU on Yahoo Auctions for only $60; you'd be lucky to pay twice that on eBay

Super Potato is nice to look at likea museum.

but very expensive and yes, they cater to foreigners who pay the ridiculous prices.
there are many retro chains like Surugaya or Mandarake. but most of them have similar prices.

stuff like Mega Drive, Saturn, PCE, SFC, FC almost everything has become quite expensive.

that is if you go for the heavy hitters.

low-end titels are still rather cheap compared to outside of Japan.
most of the resellers and foreign retro people living in Japan go to Hard Off and Book off though.
it definitely helps if you have a car like that Ramon guy.

So how much are we talking about for a saturn? I was imagining $50 for a complete console. Jap model 2 consoles go for $80 at the import shop near me. Anything more than $70 and I'd rather just buy it here to save my friend the trouble.
I thought about buying on yahoo auctions and having stuff sent to his hotel/pod/hostel but I don't really want him to have to worry about it that much.
Also am I right in assuming gamecube controllers haven't been overpriced due to smash fags?
