What are some secrets in Ocarina of Time that are easy to overlook, not so much things you can unlock but things with unusual reactions. For example:
>play Zelda's Lullaby to fix signs you've broken
>play Epona's Song to get a cow to get a free bottle of milk
>play Sun's Song between the 2 pillars at Lake Hylia and a large fairy will appear after seeing a spiraling sparkly like a chest is appearing
>hold a deku stick near a butterfly and a butterfly will land on it and turn into a fairy
>dying soldier in alley after acquiring last spiritual stone but before getting the master sword
>loach/sinking lure
>stealing fisherman's hat

>> No.5288752

not really secrets, but there's a couple gold skulltulas that nobody would be able to find without a guide.
Notably, one in Dodongo's cavern that's only reachable from that staircase you need to blow up- however, you can only get to it if you haven't blown up the staircase.

The real secret is how anyone can still play such an agonizingly dull game. Seriously each episode following the boy "adventurer" and his pals from Hyrule as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the cartoonish imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of repetitive puzzles, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Nintendo vetoed the idea of a third party producing the games; Miyanoto made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody- just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for their annual "party games" and childish fighting franchise. The Zelda series might be anti-Sony (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Spyro series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to

>a-at least the platforming elements were good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the exploration was nonexistent. As I played, I noticed that every time Link went to "explore" a largely empty world, Nintendo shoehorned in some repetitive puzzles to pad out the game. I began marking on the back of a Nintendo Power magazine every time I came to the same rehashed box pushing/lever pulling puzzles. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nintendo's team is so governed by cliches and milking tired franchises ad nauseum that they have no other style of development. Later I watched a lavish, loving Let's Play of The Ocarina of Time by some YouTube manchild. He said something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Ocarina of Time at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to owning a Nintendo Switch." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play The Ocarina of Time you are, in fact, trained to play the same dull Nintendo rehashes decade after decade.

It's well known that the game was supposed to only have adult Link. Then Miyamoto asked to change that because he wanted a child Link.

There're beta images of adult Link wandering inside the Dodongo's cavern... so, Link was supposed to go there as an adult.

Dodongo's cavern used to be the Turtle Rock from ALttP.

Another changed stuff is that young Link was supposed to enter the Gerudo fortress as a kid, that's why bow and arrow only knock the Gerudos.

It reuses assets but its an entirely different type of game. I will also say that while there are less dungeons they are bigger and a good deal more complex than the ones in OOT.

Frankly I wish Nintendo was more willing to do that on occasion. It allowed an entirely new game that many people consider good or better than the first to be created in about a year. Not saying they should do that all the time or even often but on occasion it could result in some good games.

I guess now they just call it DLC

A lot of people shit on majora's mask for reusing assets, but doing so is a big part of its atmosphere. Termina is presented as a weird alternate world, people look the same but aren't the same, certain factions in termina had analogues in OOT's hyrule. Or remember all the theory crafting people have done over the years regarding kakariko's well and the man with the eye of truth.
Most post n64 games do not have that aspect. When I go through wind temple in wind waker. I think "this is the wind themed dungeon." I'm not wondering who built this and why, I'm not curious about the dungeon's aesthetics; any strange statues or designs. Everything feels so dry and meant to only be taken at face value There's nothing there to fuel your imagination.

I liked the woods mostly for the occasional ruins of kokiri forest you’d find. Also cause of the whole thing basically being a massive pitcher plant, a lot of the moving parts felt like both parts of a massive plant’s body and like parts of a natural ecosystem and I dug that balance.

Agree tower of the gods was probably the coolest dungeon though. Also agree with the other anon that WW’s dungeons mostly don’t make you wonder about the world. Though I guess earth temple was meant to be a massive crypt, I don’t know what if anything wind temple was meant to be.

The only problem I have with windwaker is that its far too easy. The game never really challenges you. I hear the remaster has a hard mode so maybe they fixed that.

It really doesn't. Enemies do double damage, which sounds hard, but what it actually means is that enemies will now deal half a heart of damage rather than a quarter.
And bosses are still insultingly easy; it's boarderline impossible for them to hit you in the first place.

Do that on the new hard mode where no hearts appear and you’d be set for a decent challenge. I played on the gc version and even there I had to get creative and experiment with enemy-weapon weaknesses that I’d never had to before. Boomerang actually felt as useful as it did in Zelda 1 sometimes.

>construction workers are construction workers still but are incredibly dutiful to the point of denying an oncoming crisis in order to keep working
>marathon runner still runs, but is now also ruled by work and routine rather than totally pointless jogging
>the Gerudo are still a tribe of thieves, but seafaring pirates rather than desert bandits
>the depressed-looking skinny guy is ultimately happy and come to terms with his misfortune, the one roadblock to his happiness being his inability to see the fruits of his labors (as opposed to not working at all)
>guards keep you in the town instead of out of the castle
>the witch sisters are still involved in witch things, but are quaint and harmless
>the forest is now a swamp, the volcano is now an icecapped mountain, the river/lake are now an open sea, the desert is now a canyon

I'd say roughly the same thing about OoA/OoS. They also reuse a lot of assets from LA, but are still entirely different games of their own.
Having assets ready and saving a lot of time, then opening up to nifty ideas like time travel as a game mechanic rather than a plot point, is a really good thing.
Not all new games need brand new graphics and engines.
Especially for OoT and LA, which both often leave many people wanting 'More of the same'. For those I honestly believe it's even a proper selling point due to that.

Does anyone here wonder what things zelda draws inspiration from?
Like, what sort of art or film, literature were the developers looking into during making oot or alttp or mm?

I can only think of a few examples that have been stated.
Link's awakening inspired by twin peaks.
Twilight princess has a lot of western (as in cowboy) movie cliches.
Wind waker has a knock off jaws theme for ocean combat.
Skyward sword's art style inspired by french impressionism.
Breath of the wild was inspired by ...skyrim..

I don’t know how direct the influence is but Zelda seems to have a certain amount in common with Ultima. Lots of things blend scifi and fantasy but the way these two do it strike a certain balance you don’t see often. They feel multigenre while still distinctly fantasy, and remind of of fantasy-adventure movies like star wars or indiana jones.

Is time travel even scifi? It usually is but if it’s only done magically then I guess it doesn’t count. But it’s not a thing you normally see in fantasy works.

Oot also reminds me A LOT of hobbit/lotr. The books much more so than the movies. I think it’s the tone and the pacing, like child time is the hobbit which sets things up and feels like a fairy tale adventure, then adulttime/lotr happens and the narrative shifts into an epic that’s a bit darker than what came before.

Caves are really nice, botw desperately needed some.

Botw does a really good job at capturing the feeling of hiking though, and I’m positive the team had to go on some hikes to capture the same feeling Miyamoto felt exploring as a kid. Botw borders on just being a hiking sim honestly, but it does a damn good job of it.

Fire Temple = Prison that also housed the remains of Volvagia. Possibly a remnant of Hyrule's wars, which then became a place of worship by the Gorons.
Water Temple = Probably a cistern of some kind. Directly effects water levels within itself and Lake Hylia. Might also be a former Zora city, or at least place of worship.
Shadow Temple = Outright stated to be a product of Hyrule's brutal history. Very evidently a mass grave and torture center run by the Sheikah, probably under orders from the Royal Family.

I remember the puzzles being much, much harder. Figuring out how to progress is a real challenge sometimes.

Combat...you fight harder enemies earlier but the enemies are still a joke. If you know at all what you’re doing a stalfos is going to be a joke no matter how early you fight one. You have to use self imposed challenges for the combat to be tough, which is a real disappointment. I’d love a version of oot that had enemies who are challenging even when you know the right strategies.

Double damage makes no real difference, enemies do a full heart of damage instead of half, big whoop.

Reversing overworld adds some novelty but not filling it with enemies is such a missed opportunity.

Only played it once like a decade ago but this was all my impression from back then. Got stuck in spirit temple and then the gc memory card became corrupted so I never actually finished it. I should go back to it one day but I’ll probably try a 3 heart run of normal oot first.

Well I think the gc version didn’t reverse the overworld, that was new for the 3ds version. But not filling it with enemies is still a missed opportunity.

I never knew this was a thing. Only non-glitch method is to leave dodongo’s after getting the bomb bag right?

Yeah. It’s been so long I can’t remember how many puzzles were even sensible, I know some like the cow in jabujabu weren’t exactly logical. But I can’t remember how many.

I imagine he wasn't too up to date on just how much people have torn this game apart. I'm still learning new things all the time though so I'm holding out.

In 2011, you say? Oh, you mean right after Ocarina of Time 3D came out? How convenient that he would reveal such a thing right when such a thing might boost sales of a new game that happens to be a remake of the game he's talking about... I'm sure it's unrelated, though.

I can only make out いきだ よ with that audio quality and my gaijin ears.
Real curious why they never used them.

Is that こち? (East)
If that's right that makes me wonder if Navi was supposed to give contextual advice via voice instead of just saying HEY and providing help via text.
That would be cool if she said directions enemies where in or something.

Peter Pan inspired Link's look in NES Zelda, his shadow in Zelda 2 and a lot about OoT with the Kokiri where they introduced their Tinkerbell equivalent and the Kokiri don't age and leaving childhood is a major theme.

There's a lot of fantasy lightreimaginings of medieval history and religion. The Triforce is like the holy trinity, gerudos are like Islamic.

Breath of the Wild and early games are inspired by ancient astronaut theories because it's popular type of scifi for older generations. Super Mario Land was about it too even. Look up chariot of the gods and jomon pottery/ dogu statues.

I can't believe I never made any of those connections between LoZ and Peter Pan. Especially the Kokiri, when you mention it like that it seems so damn obvious.
