I wanted to get a /vr/ handheld, but I don't know which one to get.
What handheld has the best retro games/plays retro games the best?

>> No.5295514

>>5295505
get a gameboy advanced sp, they can play the gameboy, gameboy color and gameboy advanced games. But if you want the seag game gear then use the psp and an emulation software for it.

>> No.5295520

PSP really, vita hasn't really brought anything new to the table and anything else is a joke for emulation.

>> No.5295521

New 3DS.
>SNES emulation (through VC injects) is much better than on Vita, with better sound emulation and performance
>240p screen with pseudo-scanlines and minimal window boxing. On Vita a perfect integer scale gives you a postage stamp image
>Native GBA support with 100% accuracy
>DS and 3DS libraries are a nice bonus

I like my Vita, but a N3DS or N2DS are just flat out better. Unless you really want to play some clunky PS1 games.

Just search “RetroArch 3DS” and “SNES ultimate VC injector”. You’ll find threads on gbatemp with download links.

If you mean hacking your 2DS to run emulators and such, check out >>>/vg/hbg
Also note that if you have an Old 2DS emulators will perform much, much worse. There’s no official SNES VC for the Old systems either.

Since you have an O2DS you should stick to the bubble2k ports of Snes9x and PicoDrive. They’ll perform much better.

Depending on what you value more:

Backlit GBA Taco or SP

PSP or N3DS depending if you prefer the PS1's library to DS' library

This. Also check out some of the GBA color palette restoration hacks (Mario, DKC) and then use them for VC injects.

Devinacker has a decent, though unfinished, Prboom port.
Masterfeizz has ctrQuake, Quake2ctr, and EDuke3d.

The DS has two screens, each with a resolution of 256x192, the image having 256x384 and cannot be scaled on the Vita.
SNES has plenty of resolutions, but usually runs at 256x224 or 256x240. Both scale respectively to 512x448 and 512x480.

>>5296013
Ironic, in that apparently GPD was the one actually producing most of JXD's early handhelds (and possibly some other company's too). It was only when they made the G5 and G7 that they had enough money to market their devices under their own brand name. Luckily I didn't pay too much for my collection, as I bought most of them used from ebay or directly from people on dingoonity.

A couple theories why you probably won't any:

The market for emulation machines fell after China dropped their ban on imported vidya (although there was a resurgence of famiclones later, looking to profit off NES Classic's popularity).

It made more sense for them to sell gaming phones and snap-on bluetooth controllers separately. Considering the rate tech improves, Bluetooth controllers are more future-proof than phones/tablets with integrated controls. A more powerful gaming phone is likely to come out before you wear out a controller, so it's cheaper in the long run to just snap your old controller to your new phone than having to pay for new controls along with the new phone.

But hey, that's just a theory. An I don't really understand tech and economics enough so I'm really just talking out my ass theory. Thanks for reading.

get the psp GO. it's the best for emulation.
reasons:
>no need to buy shitty proprietary memory cards, it already has 16gb of storage
>plays everything up to PS1, GBA flawlessly, except n64 (n64 runs well on *certain* games but not all)
>TV output and Bluetooth to connect a wireless controller
imagine a switch but in 2009. it even has a little cradle.
this should be the best reason to buy a GO, any other handheld that works for emulation can't be played on a TV AND a portable console, well unless you count shitty Aliexpress consoles that output in shitty blurry quality and only go up to SNES or Genesis and not even GBA

because it's not portable?
if you really want to be carrying a seperate bag just for a console with a 3 (or less) hour battery life, might as well just buy a shitty small laptop and emulate on there. the psp go has around 5-6~ hours of battery and is actually... y'know, portable.
Incase you didn't know, pic related isn't a charging cradle, it's like a switch dock where it can output natively to a TV

wtf? I doubt it. not even ultra normies liked phone emulation. I remember when my classmate got a new phone, he put an NES emulator on it and tried to play SMB. needless to say he and everyone that tried it complained nonstop about the touch controls and how it was shit. maybe if they ever released a super compact Bluetooth gamepad I would have understood, but everyone I talked to hated emulation on their phone because they either had to deal with the touch controls or straight up buy a Bluetooth gamepad that looked like a fucking full size PS3 controller and snap it on, so it looked way more autistic than just playing a DS or PSP or something in public

I never said it was good, I’m saying that carrying a separate device just for playing old games didn’t really make sense for a lot of people.

That’s why things like the Dingoo and GP2X died out, no one wanted to carry those for something their phones could sort of do.

on the topic, shame people today are complacent with shitty microtransaction games. mobile gaming was so promising when it first kicked into gear or "became a thing" shit like dead trigger, the modern combat series, Zenonia 1-3 (last one is literally inexistent now, hell I don't think you can even play it if you find an apk, it was a very fun rpg game), all of this running on a shitty 850mhz CPU with 512mb of ram, this was the future of smartphone gaming, and it would only get better. fast forward to 2018/19 and everyone has phones with specs that rival mid-high end computers from a year ago, with 16gb of ram and a 3.8 octa core CPU, and dedicated graphics chips, but all the top games are either clones of clash of clans, or clones of the same gacha game with pretty jpegs and gameplay consisting of opening your wallet and mashing in your credit card info to get the ultra rare 5 star png of the month

Unfortunately the precedent is that no one will spend more than around £5 for a game on a smartphone. Triple AAA developers won’t even get involved if they can’t sell their games for at least £30 upfront, so “you give us money, there see? Wasn’t that fun?” gaming is all we’re going to get.

I imagine piracy would also be a pretty big problem on Android.
