Judging retro by generational leaps instead of years released differences is dumb. N64 was a good console

Beamdog is a guilty of a number of different crimes. Here are the major ones.

1. The Enhanced Editions are essentially a collection of free mods that had existed for nearly twenty years. Beamdog gathered them all up, slapped "Enhanced Edition" on it and resold it as a new product. There's very very little in the Enhanced Editions that wasn't already out there, and most of it is stuff you don't want (like obnoxious character outlines).

2. The games didn't sell so well and the originals were still far outselling them, even twenty years after their release, so Beamdog had EVERY digital distributor stop selling the originals and ONLY sell the Enhanced Edition. If you want to buy a digital copy of the originals now, they're "bundled" into the Enhanced Edition. Now these scumbags can claim sales from people just wanting to buy the originals as their own.

3. The infamous 600+ bugs on launch. The game is still riddled with bugs (as even a perfunctory glance over their forums show) but the fact that it took nearly two years for them to get a game that had been working fine for 20 years to reach playability after launch is telling of their wild incompetence.

4. This is where we get to the ones that really piss people off. Beamdog couldn't just remaster the game, they had to fuck with the content too. New dialogue for existing NPCs like Jaheira, Viconia, Safana, Kivan, et cetera was written in to make the characters more progressive and leftist friendly. Beamdog shills will argue that "adding content isn't changing content XDDD" but it is when the new content changes the core personalities of the existing characters. This is in addition to adding a slew of their own LGBT (hitherto there were none in Baldur's Gate) NPCs, all flooded with OP attributes and magic items to encourage people to play them despite their cancer.

5. Siege of motherfucking Dragonspear.

Casualization is a MYTH. Games in your time were only "hard" because of shit design choices, and relied almost entirely on memorization and dead-ends that force you to restart the game because you didn't pick up an umbrella five minutes into the game. Your interfaces were absolute shit, and your inch-thick manuals were a result of unintuitive and primitive designs, you had mechanics and stats that did not function, and a tremendous amount of them were completely redundant.

Dark Souls didn't have a manual worth reading, Rimworld didn't have a manual, Minecraft didn't have a manual, Prison Architect didn't have a manual, and these games have a lot of depth and possibilities and ways to play because they were intuitive to varying levels.

You know damn well the only reason they did that is because they had fuck-all space and memory to work with. One spacefaring open world game I forget the name of (had space travel, wizardry-style dungeons, etc.) had so much text a lot of it had to be shunted to the manual. (this arguably could be copy protection however)

Look at Final Fantasy Tactics, Star Ocean 3, Xenosaga, and Devil May Cry, they had fairly comprehensive lore in text form in the game itself, SO3 and Xenosaga's functioned like an encyclopedia and the former added more entries as you read it. A major reason modern games lack it is largely due to the ridiculous demand of full voice acting for everything, which I believe has done extensive damage to the open world RPG far more than literally everything else imaginable.

You can't even tell the difference in quality if you don't know the language.

Outside of large parts of the graphics/sound being missing or consistent slowdown, if you care at all about emulation accuracy you're a complete tard.

Classic Mega Man occasionally hits the mark, but on the whole is too obnoxious to enjoy and not satisfying to get good at because the challenge factor is all over the place.

Although every console had at least one classic game, in hindsight, the only ones worth owning from a consumer value standpoint were SNES, Dreamcast, and PS1.
