How do you patch PS1 games? I've been trying to add the fix patches to MMX5 and MMX6 but they don't change. I have the right ISO, and I have XDeltaUI, but when I patch the .bin and run the game none of the changes that should be there are there. Do .bin/.cue files need to be patched a special way with XDelta? Google hasn't given me any answer for this.

xdelta requires a very specific rom or binary revision due to the way it works.
It's zero tolerance compared to IPS/UPS/BPS and frankly sucks balls.

I wish romhackers would go instead with bat scripts to unpack the iso and then apply multiple individual ips/bps patches for the files inside the iso that need modification, then repack the iso. That would make it work with isos that are just off one byte and reduce the stress that comes with finding the correct iso dump. As a bonus it would make patches much smaller too.

Your best bet is to go with the redump bin/cue files since that's the closest to a standard for ps1 files and hope it's the one.

Depends on the game/level of hacking. If you wanna make something different, grab some editor like SMW's Lunar Magic or Kirby Adventure's KALE, and start making your own levels and whatnot. If you wanna do something crazy like turn Super Metroid into Super Metroid Arcade, then you need to learn the ROM inside and out, and possibly learn the actual ASM used.

Has anyone here ever played the FF6 romhack "Brave new World"? I think it gets too much hate because of the cringeworthy lines and dialogue, but the additions to the gameplay are really solid. Limiting magicite so that specific users have specific niches they can fill really helped give everyone a unique roll, not to mention rebalancing all the specialty roles. My favorite had to be how you can get Celes to wear a badge from General Leo which lets you use his shock ability. I thought that was cool.

That Mega Man X6 Improvement patch is a goddamn lifesaver. The game is still complete ass (though I'm playing with the light patch; maybe the heavy patch that more drastically alters the game by removing nightmare features entirely would improve it; I'm not really a fan of them culling all the Reploids that don't give anything in that patch though, I think collecting them is part of the fun when there isn't the constant looming threat of permadeath) and I wouldn't wish this hell on anyone but it made getting 100% completion so much less painful. What did feel off in your opinion?
While it alters most of the math and is...in essence radically different from the original game I think it works pretty well as "its own thing".
The ability to mix and match job commands in a more elaborate way is pretty cool, gives you a lot more control, like if I want Lenna to be a dedicated caster that doesn't even use item/fight commands I can do that and it's actually workable.
I also like the field element system, I think having 5 elements there makes it more flexible and interesting than the inspiration (Chrono Cross), and it's fun to set a "combo" for better damage with summons or better chances for status effects to stick.
Being able to modify difficulty and encounter rate on the fly is also interesting, if you feel things are too easy you can just crank difficulty up a notch and it feels right again, or you can disable EXP gain for a while so you can grind without becoming overpowered.
And while some of the new classes are still obviously not finished the ones that are have a bunch of nice tricks. At first I was turning Crusader off but turned out to be quite useful, and Tinkerer is actually a lot of fun with how consumables got reworked. Arcanist (?) with spells that work with certain conditions is also fun to work with. And having more variety with the caster classes is awesome.

That said I think there are some flaws, regular encounters aren't super exciting in most cases, at least around the second world, the brave/default system is neat but the underlying ATB makes it a bit wonky at times (like enemies would sneak attacks during extra turns from time to time, Byblos was particularly annoying), and while I like the new gear system, you gotta be a lot more careful than you should when auto-equipping. (doesn't help it still uses FFV's interface mostly untouched so you better have the equipment reference sheet handy because the game itself doesn't tell you shit).

But all in all I kind of love it.

Well, field elements increase damage and chance for status ailments of that element to stick (like if the field is all poison it's very likely that doomclaw will work in one try for example), this affects all spells, weapons and summons get an even bigger buff (the dev says 3x the boost). The best way to set it up is with double actions (like X-Magic) or accumulating a couple extra turns by defaulting. It's actually pretty worth it if you aim to exploit a weakness.
As for making his own game, I'd play it really, his other hacks show a style that aligns pretty well with my tastes, but hey if he decided to make a romhack, why not? He doesn't seem to be shilling or attention whoring it very much so I think he's literally doing it for the fun of it.

the latter. even without making any fakemon (pic related) it'd still be a colossal amount of maps, new sprites (since i'm pretty much a perfectionist and there's a lot i'd want to change), new music and i also have to come up with an actual story and characters to go along with it and that's really not what i'm interested in.

Great news for anyone that's been wanting to get into Wario Land 4 hacking / level editing, but don't have the technical know-how to write a level editor! A user at WarioForums is working on a Lunar Magic-type editor for Wario Land 4 and the current release on his GitHub runs fairly well.

https://warioforums.com/threads/a-new-project-for-wl4-rom-hacking-and-level-editing.2981/

I haven't had much time to play around with it, but I'm really grateful to see someone put time into developing this and I'm very eager to see what people will / can do with it.

It's pathetic, but I may as well ask. I'm trying to get this Final Fight CD Colors patch working on a US Sega CD.

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=18318.0

Problem is, you gotta patch the Japanese BIN, and the Sega CD is region locked. I've got the image files patched, and there are converters, but they only seem to patch ISO files. How do I convert Final Fight CD to an ISO that I can region change? Every program I'm trying is giving me errors. I know I'm missing something.

>> No.5303432

>>5257062
It's not possible to do anything better than dump the 8x8 pieces. There's no index in the game that tells you what sprite appears right/below another one.

And if you're talking about colors, no to that as well. You have to figure out the palettes manually and can use Photoshop or something to mass apply the palettes.

What's the go-to resource for working with tiles and sprites? I was thinking about editing Link's sprite in LttP, but I'm not sure what's the most up to date way of doing it.

I fucking did it. Sega CD games can't be converted into just an ISO, because they're audio CDs, but you can extract the tracks and make the rest into an ISO with certain programs. I used bchunk. The ISO region patched too. It triggers the US bios when I loaded it in an emulator. Not I just gotta convert the bin and audio tracks back to bin/cue and burn this sucker.

Well, I made a cuesheet for the iso and wav files, and tried to use that in a burner. The burn failed on the final track, track 29, but the error message didn't seem to imply the track was corrupt, just that the size was too big for the burner?

I checked the cuesheet in CDmage and confirmed that it was properly connected to every track, including 29. I then had it convert the files into a single bin with a cuesheet. That burned with no errors.

It's playing on a US Sega CD and the music is there, but I just wish I could be 100% certain there were no issues with track 29. More than likely there aren't, but I won't feel comfortable uploading it until I'm certain.

From a review:

>An option should at least exist to use the revised beam graphics from stock project base. This author’s choice to keep project base’s increased rate of fire while reincorporating the original beam graphics is a problem because it seems to result in mild slowdown. The classic beam graphics appear to be slightly animated which is more taxing on resources with the higher rate of fire, especially when there are several other moving objects on the screen. The revised project base beams, especially with the vanilla color palette not only look better but have no animation and therefore yield a smoother game play experience.

I specifically want to know if it's possible to easily create 'cutscenes' where a character walks up to you, talks, walks to another and plays a 'hit' sound effect, and so on. Anyone know if this is from some hack? If so which?

Also how hard is it to make hacks of snes or nes ff games? any hand tools?

>> No.5329331

>>5329131
That is from some fangame made after 2005 using RPG Maker 2003. It's called Final Fantasy Blackmoon Prophecy. It appears to use assets from various SNES FF games, and some from other games that don't really fit the already jumbled artstyle. Either way, not /vr/.

As for your second question, depends on what you want to do, and which game you want to hack. FF1 has some old tools that let you edit layouts and enemy formations and some spell editing. FF2 has two tools total, one lets you edit text in the game, the other lets you edit a great deal including maps, shops, monsters, and spells. FF3 has three tools, that will let you edit maps, text, and enemy stats. FF4 has about three multi-tool editors worth using, and lets you edit a great deal. FF5 has one multi-tool editor that lets you edit items, jobs, enemies, enemy formations, and shops, but not maps or text. FF6 has 16 tools, I'm not gonna bother trying to summarize them.

So FF6 is probably the one you can alter the most without going deep into hex or learning the ROM locations of shit. As for difficulty of making a hack, depends on how much of a change you want it to be, and how much work you're willing to put into it.

Can anyone point me to resources regarding tile swaps on genesis games?
I want to try something on a game called Comix Zone but it seems the game is compressed with something and any of the tile viewers fail to read anything from the rom,its just noise.

>compressed graphics
You'll need to decompress them before you muck around with them. Which format is it using? LZ77? RLE? Try throwing it through different decompression tools until you get something usable.

And romhacking.net is the only real resource for this stuff.

>> No.5331831

>>5331769
from what i cant tell on romhacking the tools for decompression are all for specific games probably because offsets.
that said i dont even know how to check what compression the game has applied on it.

From random googling, Spriter's Resource says Comix Zone uses LZSS.

Decompressing graphics in a game nobody's hacked before is a solvable problem but I recommend against it for a first project.

>>5331831
Try this: https://pypi.org/project/lzss/#description
You'll just need to identify where all the graphics you wanna edit are on the ROM, copy+paste that to a hex file, then run that through the decrypter. Edit normally, recompress, and put the compressed data back where it belongs. Sounds easier than it really is.

Link's Awakening DX.
Quality of Life improvements. Prevents annoying dialogue boxes that cannot be skipped with B in the DX version.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3597/
Restoration. Reverts some localization changes like turning the mermaid's swimsuit into a necklace. Also fixes at least one typo.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/612/
Photo Album translation. Also has a separate patch to modify some text to look cleaner, sprites to make sense, and removes the text over photos while viewing them.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2361/
And the Oracle font hack too. For those who don't like italics.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/927/
All of those definitely work together, from start to finish

There's also a VWF font available. Not sure how well it works.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2414/

There is a small bug with the QoL improvement one, in that one piece of optional dialogue from Marin is completely inaccessible due to requiring detection of low hearts (Which beeps).
The "...Eeek! You're hurt!" part in this image.
As far as I could tell it had no other negative impact on the game at all.

Just a small update on this I tried the LZSS decompressor and it did absolutely nothing.
From searching around I found out that this game has never been properly tile ripped, its all captured from emulators and put together.
It looks like it uses custom compression and that is way above my head.
I poked around in exodus but it takes someone someone fluent in 68k assembly to piece it together and figure out whats going on.
