I thought the cape was the intended way, you breeze the whole level off screen then near the end you dive hard before looping back up past the goal. A masterful technique to gain access to the hardest underwater level in the game, complete with a unique enemy.

You can't do it with Yoshi, and you can't take him with you, ergo you have to sacrifice Yoshi in order to do this trick. The only way you can claim you didn't is if you never picked him up in the first place, or just left him behind to die somewhere else.

I never even thought of sacrificing a Yoshi back in the day. Always did it with a cape. But it was hard as fuck, I'd take flight at the last long platform, then do my up-down flight pattern (where I get to the point of a hard downward flight then pull up and so on to keep flight) and hope that I'd happen to get it timed to fly down just before the first gate, and then back up. Sounds more complicated than it actually was, usually would take me 5 or 6 tries to do it.
