Final Fantasy has always had a sprinkle of weird Japanese humor in it. Only FF7 fans who were brainwashed into thinking the original game was as emo as Advent Children and the Compilation games by Nomura would think otherwise. As someone who used to think that ffvii was a super serious edgy game as a teen, I agree 100%, and that is part of the reason why I am worried about the remake; the realistic graphics make me believe they are going to go the serious route. I was playing ffvi recently and one of the reasons why I like that game is for its incredibly goofy humor (like Terra using magic for the first time in front of Locke and Edgar, or Sabin suplexing a train). I really really hope that Nomura and co. Somehow return to their old selves and make one of the reasons what made ffvii great in the first place - the goofy Japanese humor.

FFVII is amazing because the apocalyptic conflict was only a backdrop for Cloud's character arc from someone who derived his self-worth from emulating someone he wanted to be into a whole person, his own person. I hate how the Compilation did everything to take that away from him, from rewriting the Mt. Nibel reactor scene in Last Order to resurrecting Sephiroth in Advent Children.

The Compilation took all the weight out of the crisis facing the planet too, though, by resurrecting Rufus (completely counter to the original game's anti-corporate leanings) thereby nullifying any consequences for his actions—think about it: why is Reeve, the only Shinra board member who didn't sell his soul and redeemed himself, alive by the end of the game? Then there's the 500 Years Later scene that's supposed to leave humanity's fate to the player's imagination.

(Why are the Turks still alive? They're agents of Shinra's evil—intstruments. That isn't to say they're innocent, though.)

Squal, Rinoa, and Seifer are the only characters who have any impact on the story. The rest are just there to fill battle roles and there for the ride. Compare this to FF7, where Vincent is super important to the backstory and getting him reveals so much, and Yuffie while a side character has two full side-quests. And at the very least, Yuffie has a whole nation that she helps illuminate.

Zell, Selphie, shooter McGavin, etc never never much in terms of quests or anything. Selphie is there ENTIRELY to be the cute bait. I realized a bunch of the FF8 cast are just bad copies of the FF7 cast, but worse, cuz they thought it would sell:

This brings us to Rinoa, and the romance plot tumor. The romance in FF7 works because it's so under-stated and partially optional! If you so desire, you can tell Aeris to stuff it and you basically ignore her. And with Tifa, she and Cloud have this huge backstory and connection and it ends up driving most of the plot (it's why he joined Shinra in the first place). The romance with Aeris or Tifa is both plausible, and under-stated. They never get sappy or too much.

Contrast this with FF8. Rinoa is just some princess bitch Squal comes across randomly. Somehow they become those star crossed lovers. Because FF7's romance was popular, especially among girls, they really over did it with FF8. I really have no clue why Squal goes for Rinoa or why they suddenly just fall in love. It's given very little build up. And while I would kill to get a girlfriend like Tifa or Aeris, you couldn't pay me to date Rinoa.

I don't wanna defend the love story elements of this game because I don't find them very compelling, but there's a ton of build up if you're paying attention during the game. It's clear there's a mutual attraction when they first meet, she begins a flirtation, he resists to remain professional, and they have tension for half the game. The rest of the party is actively pushing them together. When she becomes a sorceress and her safety and his duty come into conflict he realizes he has feelings for her.

I don't think it's a great love story but a huge amount of the story is focused on it.

Zell and Selphie didn't have much story relevance, but they existed to counter-balance the rest of the cast. Like when the Gardens are being attacked, you need to have at least one character in the party who can freak out about it so the player understands that the rest of the characters are too professional to be openly distraught over it and not just because the game is glossing over it. A character like that is important from a presentation perspective, especially with a cast as stiff as VIII's.

Compare that to someone like Wakka from X, who doesn't contribute much after the first hour because Tidus already fills that role. I think their main misstep was just having two characters who filled that role in VIII, which is why both of them ended up making the other feel unneeded.

The story as a whole is an inconsistent mess with several scenes missing and a pathetically shallow character development for the mains and none for the secondary characters.

The characters in FFVIII are all there to act as thjngs for Squall to react to. The story is about a grouchy jerk making unlikely friends and finding love.

His character development is the plot, and the characters all serve a purpose in that.

Rinoa is obviously the love interest.

Zell is the stooge to Squall's straight man. The goofy friend.

Selphie is a perky twit, but she helps soften Squall up a lot. Mostly in little moments, like unlocking the train for her, or the optional scene where he shows her around garden.

Irvine is more or less the average guy, jock friend type. A normal person Squall knows. His main purpose is the last party member to join and his involvment that ot twist everyone hates.

Quistis' main role is to showcase how broken and jerky Squall is at the start, but she is also the person he's most familliar with and presumably known the longest (not counting the orphanage). So she needs less development and helps develop Squall less than the others later. But she has her moments.

That's just the main party. The key here is remembering that everything is about Squall's character arc, and everyone is in support of that.

If you look at the evil time which who wants to kill everyone part and say that's the main plot, then no one, not even Squall, has any importance to that. they're just hapless in that.

The problem with Rinoa and the "romance" with her is that it simply feels like an after-through that they put in and then tried to make more important than it actully is. Now I kinda like the idea that their romance is a continuation of one between Julia and Laguna that they couldn't have but consider the following:

I'd argue that FFVIII's theme and main plot point is not love but fate and more specifically not being able to go against yours:
It's Laguna's fate to defeat Adel and to become president of Esthar where is forced to stay instead of being able to go back to Raine and Ellone in Winhill.
It's Squall's fate to become the leader of SeeD and to defeat Ultimecia.
It's Zell's, Quistis', Selphie's and Irvine's fate as the children of fate to defeat Ultimecia with Squall and to become the "legendary SeeDs".
It's Ultimecia's fate to get unjustly persecuted for things she hasn't even done yet, to try to overcome her fate with the time compression and ironically causing the exact thing she tried to pretend.
Everyone's fate leads up to keeping the timeloop in game's world going and its important to note no one really wanted their respective fates which is best presented by Squall not being exactly enthusiastic about people forcing the position of leadership of SeeDs to him.

Now what does Rinoa and the "romance" with her has to do with any of this? Absolutely nothing apart from Rinoa being one of the sorceresses whose powers eventually pass on to Ultimecia and that role could have easily been filled by any other female character in the game with or without romance subplot with her.

Seriously, think about all the scenes featuring Rinoa especially the ones you need to save her. I can't be the only one who thinks the game goes full-retard during them? Or that FFVIII could be improved a lot by having anyone but Rinoa as the forced love interest or simply by removing the whole romance sub-plot from it all-together? Rinoa really serves no purpose apart from being an eventual love interest for Squall or that the scenes that have focus on rescuing her really feel out of place?
