Most rational people knew it was fake but there were always a few dumb yokels who believed it. I remember an old WCW Clash of the Champions where Hulk Hogan is battling Rick Flair outside the ring and hogan stumbles over to the ringside no shitting some 80yo granny stands up and whacks him over the head with her cane and Hogan on live TV reels back holding his forehead and says "son of a bitch!"

Now what was a mystery for years was how the business worked, like I didn't know Vince McMahon was the owner of the WWE as a kid, thought he was just the ring announcer. And people had an idea it was scripted but didn't know how champions were chosen or how they decided who won, etc. Of course that mystique is all gone now in the age of shoot interviews which would have gotten you fired 30 years ago.

One of my eternal /vr/ shames is permanently trading this amazing game for Premier Manager '97 on genesis - a text-based game you can't even see the players playing lol. I also got an appreciation for in-ring talent so Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and Shawn Michaels took his place.

DDP was always great in any respect, though.

I played WWF Wrestlemania to hell and back, back in the SNES days. I never understood why the game box had Yokozuna and Bam Bam Bigelow, but the game itself didn't (the SNES version didn't have those two characters).
