Okay, so I'm worried. I just learned that Hideous Destructor breaks DeHacked, if I load HD with an old map, it straight up acts as if DEHACKED lump didn't exist.

Are we turning into Brutal Doom? Don't laugh, think.
- The mod drastically changes the way the game plays
- There is a rapidly growing fanbase that insists it's the bestest mod ever because it's more 'immersive' and 'realistic' and that all people who complain are pussies who only whine because mod is too hard for them
- More and more fans of the mod insist that creators of other mods/maps add support for HD
- the mod appears to have no clear endgoal of being 'finished' and just piles on more and more features. So far it's fine, but it might result in feature creep down the line
- and now we even have bizarre code breaking basic mapping tricks, since HD breaks/disables Dehacked, and like 90% of maps from 90s/2000s use Dehacked.

Biggest difference is that Matthew is a chill dude, instead of an edgelord asshole like Mark, but still.

Are we the baddies? Okay, we're not, the fanbase is nowhere near at the level of bullshit of BD fanbase... Yet. It's definitely something to watch out for.

i just did, it's not really good

first of all HEY, WANT TO PLAY FORTNITE the game is really linear, and pretty much everything (medikits, weapons PLEASE DOWNLOAD FORTNITE and ammo) are enemy drops, said enemies CLASH OF SOMETHING have a range of about 4 steps, and a dash, but i still can't tell if it's an actual dash or just a collision glitch that sends them zipping in one direction. the rooms are all small and DOWNLOAD FORTNIGHT OF CLASHES kind of empty, no secrets and the only windows look more like an oversight. the game also only keeps 3 rooms loaded at a time apparently, barely any backtracking or exploration possible, it's all linear.
oh, and there's an arena mod too, it's kind of the same except in an arena and enemies drop coins you have to use to buy guns. (and in case you didn't notice, ads are annoying)

it's clearly not running a proper doom engine, you can look in 3d but the rocket explosions feel glitched if you're not on a flat plane, you can pick up medikits if you're already at 100% (wasting them), armor isn't mentioned anywhere and you can't see any map (not that you'd need to)

Every single gameplay mod breaks Dehacked. That's just how DECORATE/ZScript interacts with it. If a vanilla actor gets replaced, any Dehacked modifications made to that vanilla actor are null and void. The only gameplay mod I know that takes any measure against this is MetaDoom with its CVAR to disable its Nazi/Keen replacements, and it'll still overwrite any changes made to the regular weapons and enemies.

My guess is that if you die, you'll respawn somewhere in the level like a checkpoint system, but keep the progress of the stage done. Run out of lives, I presume they have measures for just sending you back to the last checkpoint with all progress past it undone, maybe harder difficulties cause a map restart? I generally figure the lives would be kind of a necessity when the player-Demon invasions get involved so that invasions don't just awkwardly stop and players don't lose too much progress when it happens.

I'd recommend you that one mod that changes the weapons to quake's but even with it the game's still not all that great. there's some severe ammo starvation it can cause, throwing the balance off kilter for a good chunk of the maps you play. but at least it spices up the combat, makes it a bit more fruitful and the guns a bit more satisfying. unfortunately I can't remember what it was called.

heretic was just fucking boring in my own experience anyways, so only keep at it if you would really really like to find out what Doom would be like if it had no oomph or kick to its combat whatsoever.

My mom had that issue with first person games until she got really into Everquest. So maybe trying a port that renders in a more true 3D way (GZDoom) might help. A big issue for a lot of people is the framerate. It's why VR headsets are garbage unless they're 90hz at least. Back then Ultra-Violence was sort of like, meant to be the uber hardcore "so you think you're bad, amigo?" kind of difficulty, one that should've been too difficult for most players to take on earnestly. Hurt Me Plenty was essentially the standard difficulty the game was intended for most players to go with.

Then people conquered Ultra-Violence way more easily than the devs expected and requested something harder, and Nightmare! got added in a patch as a joke difficulty. Nowadays M+KB setups and shooters being so prevalent have helped trivialize UV, so even despite the large jump in monsters it's held as the standard for the community except on the occasional case a mapper outright warns players to bump things down a notch because they went really hardcore on UV/NM.

Like instead of a separate grenade launcher (which is actually two separate weapons), it's instead a launcher you attach to the assault rifle.
The Mauler's "BFG" attack is now just a secondary attack on the regular Mauler.
Instead of having the crossbow be two weapons in one slot, one for shock bolts, one for poison bolts, you instead just select them with the one crossbow as a weapon. It also gets the ability to fire a multi salvo of shock bolts, meaning the shock bolts don't become horribly obsolete as soon as you get the assault rifle.

There's some stuff like that. I think it really helps make the combat smoother and more enjoyable. There's also a couple of other small things here and there, such as how robotic enemies can drop scrap electronics which you can sell for a little bit of money.
Strife is a really cool game that I admire, but I think it's also pretty flawed and rough around some of the edges, and I feel this mod makes it much more enjoyable.

I've mixed opinions about the guy.
On one side I like his philosophy of "find the girl in the creature", sexualize it but make it recognizable,which is something many artists just don't do and I appreciate that.

Going from doom to quake was amazing. Full 3d environments, none of that weirdness when looking up and down like in doom was excellent. Seeing the difference between software renderer and 3d rendering (when you got your first 3d graphic card) was the tits. Gibs flying everywhere instead of a canned sprite animation. With doom and build engine games, I used the arrow keys to move, space to jump and ctrl to shoot. i think that the was the default back in those days. With Quake I learned to used the mouse and WASD, because if you didnt you got your ass kicked online. I used something called mpath mplayer to play quake online, it was like the precursor to steam. it was a pretty magical time, I couldn't wait to see what would come next in fps gaming.

The original designs and their sprites were at least part due to the restrictions of the time, pretty much every enemy had a unique kind of silhouette where you didn't really have to think to identify them.

all I see are armor parts (fitting for a strong fighting race like demons often are pictured). I don't disagree with their design language, it's the designs themselves that I mostly take trouble with, especially with some like the mancubus and the cyberdemon which were outright awful. it's good that they're taking more from the classic games on general terms in eternal, but overall I disagree, I find the 2016 designs didn't fare poorly.

and just me, but I'll take actual colorful, glisteny, creasy demons over whatever they went for with Doom 3 just to cite an example, where it was a common trend to make things as drab looking as possible, or even classic doom where. to this day I just can't care for some of the designs like the revenant or the chaingunner.

Picking up armour fixes the damage on the visor, but also interrupts you from doing anything for a second while you put it on. It feels quite rewarding to pick up some armour after a battle and have the screen cleared up.

Nah maps of chaos was made by someone else. it's literally the brutal doom of map packs. Mark's actual "starter pack" is a megawad called Extermination Day, which is actually pretty good, even though it hasn't officially been released yet. Both are worth playing. Plutonia is arguably better overall, but TNT has just a much stronger atmosphere to it, with great new music, and in spite of not exactly having much of a unified design goal, it mostly manages to shape up to have sort of cohesive style and theme.

I usually use a combination of a few mods. Beautiful Doom will add the visual fx, but not the gore. Nash's gore mod (my new personal favorite), ketchup, bolognese, universal gibs and BURL TUMD will all work if you want gore. Smooth Doom can add some nice effects too, but Beautiful Doom offers a bit more.
