Anon, this ain't rocket science.

How to tell if a game works? You go to your favorite rom site, and check out the game. Does it have a screencap of the game? If the answer is yes, then it most likely works. If the answer is no, then it most likely doesn't work. I've found very very very few exceptions to this rule, and that was only because the game was promoted to working status in more recent versions of MAME than the romset. Protip, the internet archive and some frenchie site have the complete romset from 0.195-0.198ish. Frenchie site has pictures so you can tell what works and what doesn't. It's almost like those preview pictures are there for a reason or something.

MAME won't run the working game? Run the fucker from the command line. CD to the directory MAME's exe is in, then tell it "mame64.exe sfrush" or whatever game you are trying to play. It will tell you exactly which files are missing that it expects and needs to run. Google can handle the rest. And if you really wanna get fancy, you can grab RomCenter 4 RC3 and point it at your copy of MAME and roms, and it will tell you which games are ready to go, which ones need some bookkeeping work(and does it for you), and which ones are missing important shit. The CRC's alone make finding the missing roms as easy as googling for them. Of course, none of this helps if you're a dumbass trying to use a 0.155 romset with MAME 0.205. Unless you wanna rebuild the entire fucking set from scratch for no good reason.

MAME isn't even that hard to figure out. Having someone who's never touched a command line before setup a PCem DOS 6.2 Win3.11 VM with proper drivers would be hard. Trying to get a PC-9801 emu fully and properly configured without a guide or knowledge of moonrunes would be hard. MAME is as simple as downloading the BIOS pack and the matching romset to MAME version. You don't even need the entire romset, just the ones you actually give a shit about.

No, you are not understanding. You CAN run games that whine about graphical or emulation issues. The color of the rom in MAME tells you what to expect. Green means it should work flawlessly. Yellow means it runs and is more or less playable, but there may be graphical issues or sound issues or missing things. Red means MAME most likely won't run it.

By running it from command line, you'll get an error message from MAME that you don't get in the GUI. So when you are missing ROM or CHD files, by running it through the command line you can find out what missing files you need. It won't run the game, it will just give you some actually useful information when it refuses to play the game.

Only guides I know to PC-9801 shit are on the wiki in the sticky.
