"...And so the world went on without him, his screams muffled by time itself.
His trial inevitable; his failure unavoidable.
Screaming hard, deep into the abyss, it finally screamed back, and it was terrifying. It took him a century to realize that the only screams were his own.

And so his subordinate genetic spawn had been placed; the endless desire to have revenge on a reality long since forgetting them.

It was said, once, that one man stood alone against a legion of the darkest creatures in all existence; that he stayed within the bowels of the Incernethale to ensure no daemon ever rose again.

Funny, then, how we are able to recount the tale, when one man had salvaged the Legions of the Damned from extinction.

At least, until his own desire for death fulfilled, and reality aborted before it could ever come to fruition."

He was a programmer and level designer as well. On top of that, in 90's iD Software, EVERYONE was an ideas guy, that's why you see their personalities reflected in the game here and there.
You can see Romero's influences, you can see Adrian's influences, you can see Sandy's influences, hell, you can even see some of Tom's influences in Doom, in spite of him being fired early in development.
Well, short of John Carmack maybe, but he made the engines.

Romero, who made some of Doom's levels, deciding to release a new set of levels for the same game, doesn't strike me as anything particularly farfetched or desperate. Romero has a lot of flaws as a person, but in no way is he on Cliffy B's level.

Installing Aleph One is such a pain in the ass, first you have to download all of the clients then put them in the parent engine folder for folder-play functionality then you get all the third party scenarios then you have to go to simplici7y then wade through there for four hours to find everything then once thats through when you install plugins they're enabled by default and I know AGENT_ORANGE theme is problematic with other ones so you flip a bunch of plugin switches manually in the text file then you have to configure the keybinds and graphics for every single game and then some texture packs were never released as plugins so you have to turn them into plugins yourself and if you have OCD you delete all of the .DS_Store's and if you ever want to switch between "classic" and "enhanced" well you have to reconfigure the entire game oh and that brings me to adding new music versions for M1, they'll get to you in a folder full of mp3s and organized in either the wrong order or alphabetically so then you have to convert them all to .ogg and then renumber them correctly. Every time you switch music, you name the playing folder "Music" and the other folder "New Music", there's no plugin for that but I wish there was. to change FOV you either learn Markup Languages which you probably already did for the XML or you're smart and get a 2dumb4u plugin on Simplici7y oh and fuck making maps Weland is a seven pointed suppository and also screw doing texture work shapefusion is such a bitch when it comes to exporting and importing

>> No.5260059

that's not a new thing, but a compilation of stuff everyone already saw
3D models will not be good until someone makes the ones with good animation (esp. death), baked-in lighting (since GZDoom cant do it on its own) and non-goofy textures. Doom gets away with a bit of goofyness and cartoonishness specifically because of its low fidelity sprites. Models can't do that, so they have to be exceptionally good to avoid looking goofy. So far no models are and the ones in the package are no exception.

Then there's the issue of HD textures applied to low-surface-count levels. Not to mention that the ones in the package make same mistake all prior tex packs do and increase scene contrast by bumping up quantity of minute details that mesh at longer distances. That never looks good.

the neural AI generated textures and monster sprites from the Doomworld thread look decent, helped by the fact that they receive touchingup post factum and are only x2 size of the original. Should keep the skill level. Typing "Skill" by it self will tell you the current skill level, with 3 being Ultra-Violence, unless a mod has added more Skill levels. If it does keep it between the Map command, then you should be able to set what the next map is by just typing Skill and then the Skill level you want.
Changemap acts as if you exited to that level through the map, so you keep your weapons and items.

Some protips:
>set up your binds
>set HD's gameplay options up as you think you'd like
>when you get hit by a fireball, you'll probably catch fire, take off your armor and then tuck and roll (basically wave your mouse around like crazy, works faster on water flats)
>when you get shot, you'll probably start bleeding, learn how to stop the bleeding
>really serious wounds can kind of be patched up, but they have lasting effects, the only way to truly fix it is with magic
>all the monsters are much harder and you'll really learn to hate them, particularly all of them
>berserk can let you do some crazy shit
>stimpacks can be good, but mind your heartrate, sitting down and taking it easy for a minute or so can be good
More importantly, with Hideous Destructor, there really aren't any rules, just do what you need to do to succeed. The monsters don't play fair, so neither should you, if you struggle to get a key, consider just bypassing the locked door in question, by crawling through a window, mounting a wall, or outright destroying the door.

Also read the manual in the .pk3 or zip file using Wordpad. It explains a lot. Also don't expect the game to give you any slack, play on Ugly until you have the hang of it.

Cheese if you have to, but HD is about surviving each level, not killing everything.

Make sure you figure out how to use the scanner in medkits because it is your best way of figuring out how badly you are injured.

Also Stimpacks are there to slow the bleeding and dull the pain/that shake you get when you get hit/hurt. This will give you a chance to save yourself with a medkit or bandages.

Crispy Doom is the best mix between "playing Doom in its original format" and "enjoying modern quality of life improvements" out there. It's the best option right now for playing Doom 1 and 2.

If you really want "the original experience," no matter what you do there's going to be some detail you're leaving out unless you spend a few hundred dollars to go get an x486 machine, a CRT monitor, a copy of Doom 1 on CD from God only knows where, and the actual MS DOS from ebay, I guess.

Chocolate Doom is just another emulation of this but if you're not going all the fucking way like I said above, Crispy Doom is best.

Not a lot. You can play really any map pack with it, but some are more suitable than others.
While Alien Vendetta is technically possible, you likely won't have a very fun time.

The original Doom episodes actually work pretty well as a soft introduction to Hideous Destructor.
E2M2 in particular is very well suited for its gameplay.

What is the point in buying crt monitor if I can just configure GZdoom like the old dos version and get crt shader filter? Chocolate or crispy don’t have crt filter, so there the blood looks too bright, sort of tomatoe pasta. With Gzdoom (software mode + crt filter) the blood looks properly (dark red), same like in old dos version, the way it was meant to look.

Revisiting all of Doom 1 and 2 through the HD lens was fun as all hell. In fact, all of episode 2 was my favorite, although Containment Area can easily sell you on the mod - unless you run into a pinky, maybe.

This is the map that sold me on it. Music was oerfect, lots of corners, fun shoot outs, a quick archie fight that doesn't ruin the map, and those hallways full of troopers are fun to mow down.

If you want to keep the red pool area open, but want to scratch the detail itch, might I suggest having that shadowed area the two dead mancubi are on instead be raised to the same height as the imp platforms (where one of the imps is gibbed), you can detail that as you wish and then have that area drop down later when the battle is joined.

Also, 3 might work better as faces spewing blood into the pool, also, I thought they were vaginas at first the way you drew them.

Anotak did a really good job at having it be an emulation of glitched stuff rather than some /x/ arse.

The drama, at least initially, was from Graf and Rachael flipping their shit over a simple precautionary measure for a very unique situation. The mod can't be played through on GZDoom, it hard crashes some levels in so they made it very clear it won't play by preventing progress in GZDoom.

Everything after that stems from that, including Graf continuing to flip his shit and Rachel being the ever-present wingman demanding nobody upset him.

At least all of this brought Lilith more attention, it's a technically impressive if divisive mod, and there's nothing else that quite does what it does without sooner or later opting to be shallow lolsorandum shit.

Even his own viewers get pissed off at him, he's that bad. One funny case was when there was a map with literal "skip puzzle?" switches and he was like "oh damn you know me too well"

I dont think there are that many that typically take the feedback or thoughts of his on pedestal as high as one might think, the contest is popular cause its just for fun and honestly lot of maps tend to be like "I wonder if I can get a funny reaction out of Joel" styled.

there's a hit indicator mod out there, as well as enemy radar mods, but they are all kinda jank.

What would be neat is a "threat indicator" akin to the one used in Destiny.
It shows different threats in different ways from 12 directions + central zone for when enemy is in melee range.
A bar on outer ridge - enemy is in range (~40-50m) or sees you (in case of snipers)
Red sector - enemy is close (~30m, semitransparent and gets more opaque as enemy gets closer)
Sector flashing - enemy attacks you.

In TNT Evilution's secret map 31, the yellow key you need for proceeding was accidentally not tagged for singleplayer, so it won't spawn for you.
With some speedrunning tricks, you could still beat the map anyway, but that was still a slip-up in map-design, and there's an official patch for the .wad to address this.

I assume that GZDoom just fixes that one automatically, so that you don't have a player come to a sudden halt because they didn't know there was a patch they needed to use.

Yes, presently just says something has been hurt but that should be doable.
>>5263682
Nope, in it's current state it's a hell of a lot dumber than that, it just has lines in the monster's actions for chucking that out there. You'll get what's going off from across the map.

There are no doubt smarter or at least more efficient ways to do it, though I think a properly satisfactory implementation would require stuff being done on the engine side of things.

Chucking this out there for if somebody has desperate need of it for whatever reason.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/iov6153dgbeah4e/Subtitled_Doom_v0.1.pk3

I guess as it is, it's more of a proof of concept than anything, it works but in it's current dumbest solution ever state it obviously won't play nice with monster replacers.

Dunno when I'll get the time to see to working it into something more functional and usable, there's some really fucking cool ideas in here that people have come up with that I didn't even think of.

Also if anybody fancies taking the idea and running with it, please do, the more people trying to do things, the better, especially when it comes to stuff like this.

Neat idea. Could you potentially have the words show up on the side of the HUD the monsters are coming from.
Maybe make the sounds from behind you grey, and the ones in front white...
I remember when I was playing XIII thinking how good that game would be for deaf people. Except for... the rest of the game.
