I began marking on the back of a Nintendo Power magazine every time I came to the same rehashed box pushing/lever pulling puzzles. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nintendo's team is so governed by cliches and milking tired franchises ad nauseum that they have no other style of development. Later I watched a lavish, loving Let's Play of The Ocarina of Time by some YouTube manchild. He said something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Ocarina of Time at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to owning a Nintendo Switch." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play The Ocarina of Time you are, in fact, trained to play the same dull Nintendo rehashes decade after decade.

It was the first 3D game in the saga, the gameplay and history was different than past versions, the kid/adult plot twist was new, and it catched the "wow it looks like mario 64 but it's zelda" wave.

At the end of the day, it was transcendental in the franchise's direction (all tloz games after OOT had the same frigging structure until BoTW and it's the central part of the saga's timeline).

OoT played like a game crafted for 5 year olds. As a 15 yr old at the time it offered no challenge, limited exploration compared to its predecessors, a story that heavily borrowed from LttP, and ultimately provided little fun. I was thoroughly disappointed.

Personally when I hear people say a game is overrated, I usually assume that person just didn't care for it and is salty that other people keep saying that it's hot shit.

Sure some games haven't aged that well, so people are looking back at memories, but that is the thing, most people played those games when they were new and more relevant.

Technically speaking though, Gamecube is the most overrated console of its generation. Despite the myth, it's not more powerful than PS2 (it's weaker) but simply a much easier platform for development. Despite this, Gamecube toddlers even claim that it's as powerful as the Xbox.
