What kind of stupid question is that?

Does the network adapter come with the ps2 hard drive? I'm trying to mod my ps2 and can't find the answer to this anywhere and I figured this was one of the best places to ask

You need the network adapter with a ps2 harddrive yes.

You can buy a SATA adapter on ebay though and use newer harddrives with it

on the fat models, it's the same unit, and you can install games on the internal hard drive as well as a USB one. The slim models have a built in Ethernet port, and need an weird uncommon adapter for your typical IDE/SATA hardrive

>> No.5255063

>>5255046
No. The hard drive used by a PS2 is a common IDE hard drive (also called PATA). It's a little hard to find them nowadays because most physical shops only have SATA drives, but you can still find IDE drives online.
And either way, it's way harder to find a working Network Adapter than it is to find an IDE drive. I remember they were sold at a premium here on Brazil.

If you're really serious about modchipping and using the HDD to play games, I'd recommend looking into this:
- an ORIGINAL Matrix modchip (there's a ton of clones)
- there are different programs to play games off the HDD, like Open PS2 Loader (OPL), HD Advance and HDLoader. HDLoader is older, and has trouble reading drives bigger than 250 GB. OPL is newer, but the compatibility isn't the same as HDLoader's (for example, Gundam Zeonic Front doesn't work on OPL).

We had this sort of info everywhere back in 2008, but it's steadly disappearing from the internet.

>>5255063
Just to clarify: you may want an original Matrix modchip because you can use it to boot the game off the HDD (or even from a USB stick), and save your precious optical unit for when you really need it. I think the DMS3 chip also boots off the HDD, but I think it's pretty hard to find it nowadays. The Matrix clones can't boot from the HDD.

If you don't have a Matrix modchip, you can still use an exploit to boot the PS2 off your Memory Card. Look up "Independence Exploit" if you want to do this.

What are the benefits of modchip for HDD when there is FreeMcBoot to get to loader?? I have a chip sitting around but have been busy with other projects.

It's not that hard to get those adapters here in NA, I have like 3 of them

Also they make 3rd party HDD adapters

>>5255067
With FreeMcBoot, you still need your optical drive to install the exploit (just once, but anyway). If your laser dies after you install it, and your memory card either gets defective (or most commonly, you mistakenly erase the exploit from the memory card), you'd still need the drive to reinstall it.

If you're not really serious about gaming on the PS2, just use it instead of looking for a rare Matrix modchip. I've been using FreeMcBoot for 7 years by now, and it works like a charm. Deleted the BOOT.BIN by mistake once, but no prob.

They were so hard to get here in Brazil back in 2008 that they used to cost more than the console itself.

OHH, I should also mention, playing games off of an internal HDD is a lot better than through USB. Through USB games take longer to load than they would off of disc or HDD, and in game video tend to stutter

>> No.5255080

>>5255078
That's because the PS2 still has USB 1.1 ports. It's not a problem for most games, but for stuff that streams off the disc (like the GTA games) or anything that has FMVs, it will stutter like crazy.

You can also boot off a raspberry pi through the ethernet port.

Depends, early PS2 I'd describe as playing N64 in high-res mode. Mid-to-late PS2 I'd describe as the beginning of "modern" graphical design.

They sell very simple kits for changing the PS2 network adapter over to SATA. I'm using a SATA SSD in my PS2 there's no speed benefit to using a SSD in this case, I'm just using one because why not.

Make sure you buy an authentic Sony network adapter, though. The first one I got was a chinese knockoff and it was literal trash. Games would just not load half the time, which made shit unplayable because games are constantly loading data even while playing.

it should be retro, mods need to change the rules, the ps2 is nearly 20 years old.

>> No.5255227

It could be 100 years old and it still wouldn't be retro as defined by this board. /vr/ is for discussing a specific era of gaming that the PS2 does not belong to.

how come dreamcast was added to the board then, that's a sixth gen console.

? It wasn't "added to the board". It's always been within the rules as specified by the sticky. The PS2 isn't. Stop being retarded.
