I heard it was designed for 2D games and did them well, but making 3D games was a round peg square hole situation. It came out too late but had the potential to make god-tier 2D games.

It should have been $100 cheaper at launch.

It was discontinued too early in Japan and a lot of Japanese fans share that sentiment.

For some reason they never wanted to port good games to the US.

I honestly didn't know it existed as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s.

Blame Stollard and his sports game fetish

Though with the way tastes were at the time, I don't blame him too much

There could have been amazing 2D games on that machine that weren't made because MUH 3D Marketing. Just the like Nintendo 64. My God that games that could have been made for that system.

N64 hardware was shit for 2d games
They had to stylize their 3d games as 2d.

Jon Burton has some interesting videos up about coding for the Saturn:

Great vids, recommended watch. He knew his way around the 16 / 32 bit systems blindfolded.

It has a bunch of great games. I wish it had more, but there are other great games on other systems so it's all good. A fine system overall.

Coding well for the saturn is tough but rewarding.

Sure did. It has no potential to make any games. It was a machine you played games on not a game developer.

>> No.5255806

Had some good games, but overall in terms of hardware it had nothing to do agaisnt N64 and PS1, 3D was the hot stuff at the moment and Saturn wasn't very good at it so it was doomed from the start

It had some really fucking awesome games, I only wish Sega released more of them here. There's a reason it outsold the N64 in Japan. It should've been easier to code for and it should've been 100$ cheaper. The model 1 controller is shit and breaks really easily. Sega of America and Sega of Japan were in a constant pissing match against each other and internal politics of the company fucked the system more than any of it's competitors did.
All this coupled with the fact that they killed it way earlier than they should have, pissing off devs and fans alike in what came off as a cash grab left a bad taste in everyone's mouth who invested in the thing and kind of fucked the Dreamcast.
Looking at it in a vacuum it's a solid 7/10. But in context of the company politics, the horrible mismanagement and the fact most of the good games were Gook exclusive and it gets maybe a 5.5-6/10 from me. Sorry Sega fanfucks.
