The architecture of Plutonia 2 is simply unmatched, in Doom and probably in video games in general. Though there are many wads with more surface area, longer corridors, more doors, and more secrets, all of them tend to sprawl, both as fundamental design and as a means of mitigating otherwise poor design. Points of interest are separated either by lack of interest, like empty corridors, or mindless quantity, like clumps of monsters or pointlessly long distances. Nothing comes as close to making its whole as relevant and challenging as its most relevant and challenging parts as Plutonia 2 does. Poetic descriptions like "baroque", though apt, are unnecessary. The whole thing wastes fewer square-units than the average level of lesser wads.

Are there any Doom source ports (or other retro FPS ports) with a “quick rewind” feature? So for example, you can hold down a key and the game will run backwards in real-time until you release the key, at which point the game resumes its normal operation.

(Someone mentioned Duke3D for XBLA, but I’m looking for open-source PC ports)

Similarly, are there any with “slow” and “turbo” functions that can also be activated by holding down a key?

Can someone who uses prboom+ help me out? I want to run it with openGL with a vanilla-looking automap, but the automap lines are somehow not visible and I can only see the shitty textured automap. Meaning if I disable textured display, the automap is completely blank. I'm running prboom+ v2.5.1.5 on Linux. Software rendering is fine. Doom was always about the action. Doom 3 was a brand new painting using the older ones as a reference while adding in a couple of new things that were popular at the time (Half-Life 2 puzzles/move this crane) while still having the familiar action that people grew up with.

I would even go as far as to say that Doom 2016 is an upgraded Doom 3 since it pretty much did the same thing, but cleaned it up a bit, gave it more dorection and brought more that familiar Doom 1/2/64 style more into the limelight.

That said, my first Doom game was 3, before playing 1 and 2 a few years later, so my own views will likely be very different from yours aside that I also love the older games to death.

Strange. I compiled 2.5.1.5.test myself from svn too. I just deleted my config and only changed video mode to OpenGL, and the problem is still there. I'll try and compile again and see if I was missing some optional dependencies. I'm using Fedora 29, dunno if it makes a difference.

Somehow software rendering doesn't run at 144 fps if I set it to 2560x1440, so I'd rather run crispy doom if I'm going the software route.

Wolf 09' has a strong focus on magic and occult stuff, but there's super science stuff just as well.
It's not a bad game IMO, but there's a lot to be desired. The lead dev of New Order said he thought Wolf 09' was a substandard game and thought Raven did a poor job.
I don't entirely agree on that, but I also see why someone wouldn't like it.

It has probably the weakest story of any of the Wolfenstein games I've played, by far (I haven't played New Colossus, mind), and probably the weakest characters.
This says a lot, because Wolf3D has very little narrative going beyond the basic explanation of each episode, and though RtCW has a pretty serviceable and engaging plot for what it is, the characters are mostly uninteresting.

For the original Wolfenstein 3D, I'd say you could do the original three episodes, and skip the Nocturnal Missions, because they're just eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegh....
If you liked the original three episodes, you could also check out Spear Of Destiny, which does a couple of new things.
Don't play the FormGen sequels to Spear Of Destiny though, they're so fucking shitty, oh my god.

I'd suggest maybe one or two levels a day or so, to avoid fatigue; it's got some fun to it, but it can get very formulaic.

That's the 2009 Wolfenstein game and that wasn't really praised, kinda okay at best. BJ obtains an amulet that allows him to use its powers from a parallel dimension and enter the 'veil'. On activating it there's a meter can be expended to use other abilities that can be gotten like a shield, slow-mo, or gun powerup that can be stacked for further drain, as well as being able to see creatures that can be shot for chain lightning but attack the player for overstepping it. Money can be expended on adding more effects like a wallhack or the shield reflecting bullets.

In the way of actual weapons it's probably one of the few games of its time to not actually impose a weapon limit, it's mostly collecting German weapons of the time but there's experimental science tech stuff like the Particle Cannon. Likewise they also get buyable upgrades but there isn't enough money to cover them all in a single playthrough.

Fine for a playthrough for fun but nothing special.

My favorite part of the game was the Flamethrower (which was actually really powerful and realistic after upgrading), and the Mauser rifle.

Upgrading the Mauser for damage, accuracy, stripper clips, and the bayonet, and you had a weapon you could use basically for most infantry fighting.
Skip the scope and the silencer, just fire off rounds with loud booms and stab Germans with your bayonet. The most fun way to do this is to use the slowmo magic and then sprint in to slit the throats of dozens of German soldiers, then hearing them all gurgle blood in near unison as you exit slowmo.

It's not a great game, but it's got a few good points to it. I think if a mod team could take all of the assets and make their own campaign with it, and do some tweaking, you could make a pretty good game. I think some of the levels are kind of weak, and obviously the story and characters could be way less boring (or omitted entirely, for just pure gameplay).

Thanks for the demo. I've fixed being able to be stuck on that side of the altar now, and removed the unnecessary tags (even though it makes me paranoid, even post-testing).

The original plan for that untagged linedef in the blood room was to "desecrate" the altar by shooting it (Quake style), which would pitch the player into an ambush that would open an extra area to the side, which would lead up the area where the top of the pew is. Only problem is that extra area would intersect into the bookshelf area and I couldn't be fucked remaking it. Hell, it's probably for the better as I don't like making secrets so obscure they require alt-tabbing as part of the trigger.

Yes it does, DNF had extremely bad presentation. The fact that he outright mocks other games, many which are better than DNF, looks very bad and tacky, and makes it hard to like and sympathize with him.

In DN3D, you'd find Luke Skywalker's corpse in a cave on the moon, you'd find the monolith from Space Odyssey, there was Indiana Jones' corpse in a chamber, where if you took the powerup on the pedestal it would trigger an Indiana Jones style trap, you could find a monk Rise Of The Triad hung from a noose, you could find what's supposed to be the Unabomber's apartment (as well as some wanted posters for him here and there), you could see the O.J Simpsons car chase on a TV, you could find the bridge of the USS Enterprise. You could even find 867-5309 scrawled in a bathroom in a sleazy porno theater.

DN3D put in references, but usually just for yucks and/or in good faith, you didn't have Duke Nukem sardonically insinuate he's better than them, sometimes he wouldn't even have a comment for them, they were just there. Further you often had to go and find some of these, which were hidden away and in not obvious places. Some were references to current events, both dating it as a 90's game, and also serving as a small time capsule of the times.

DNF doesn't really do any of this in any of these ways.

Eternal looks good to me because of 3 things:
1) The dash allows you to close distance in the air quickly, and it's handled way better than shadow warrior 2013 or UT2004.

E4 varies but I think it has some good levels in it. The one common consensus is that the early levels are just really punishing and cruel. Some like them, some don't.

For Master Levels, I've heard people on here, people on YouTube, people on Doomworld, talk about a partial or whole dislike for them. I particularly hate Mephisto's Maosoleum, and I'm not alone in that.
I personally think the levels are very dull and too samey, they offer some challenge, but they use a very limited range of Doom 2's stock resources, and as a whole they're mostly very brown and tan colored. A lot of them feel like a chore to play.
They're not very pretty to look at, and the gameplay in them is mostly nothing very interesting. As far as a proper 'expansion pack' for Doom 2 goes, I think Final Doom does everything better, more interesting levels, better challenge, new assets and environments.

There's small parts I like about it though. You have the very early works of aspiring mapper Sverre Kvernmo, and while this is before he really got into form, so they aren't that good, it's interesting to look at. He had this series in mind, with a plotline, called The Cabal Series which is about a Cyberdemon in hell, disgraced and turned into a human as punishment, seeking vengeance. The problem is A), only parts of it qualified for Master Levels, and B), it's still not very good, you read the premise, and you get some ideas in your head, but the series fails to deliver, and it's not even all of it.

Just maps, really. Can't change the order of secret levels and such, so the first exit would have to be on map15 and the next on map31. It's got 13 maps total atm, then a credits map.
So it would need 2 new maps just to get to the first secret exit (then the secret map and potentially another), and need to be a full 32 replacement for a boss map + secret levels.
boom compatibility means no access to a mapinfo lump so I can't shift this around.

Checked my levels (Action Max) and they all look like the final versions to me. Only just noticed that the door out of the acid room in map02 disappears into the sky and the door into the room is logically impossible, but that's my fault for setting the ceiling heights wrong. PK's maps are not designed for that, there'd be way too few enemies and it will be over too quickly even if you pack the areas to the brim (unless you go full chillax.wad, but that will be just as boring as respawns).

Also Doom'16 is rather short, so it ends before it gets old, and also does much better with its monster variety than PK - PK has many different enemies, but they have few archetypes and are used thematically with only 2-4 enemy types per level which contributes to the repetitivness.

Old Doom just sent over inputs and synchronised player positions and the current point of its pseudo-random number generator to keep things consistent.

Zandronum whichis what most people use is a ZDoom fork, and it has to synch up a hundred times more shit than old Doom did, even when you are playing without the mods because of the fundamental changes made by DECORATE and ZScript.

ZDaemon and Odamex are much more lenient on the ping, but are also much more vanilla which is not up to everyones tastes.
