Point systems aren't pointless, but are more or less pointless in some games. Like some platformers where it's trivial to max out the score.

I guess you could still compete over how fast you can max it, like this guy:

So maybe it adds a little something to do, even for those games.

Yes. FFVII is one of those games that has forged its own culture of fans, many of them too young to have played it originally, but they like the characters and the plot from having watched videos on twitch or youtube.

Don't you remember the articles talking about how boss fights and gameplay were "getting in the way" of gamers enjoying the story? We live in a hell of a time. They unironically think that having to play the game in order to be a fan of it is a form of shaming or "gatekeeping" in the fandom. I guess if you can pretend to be a different gender nowadays and expect people to respect that, pretending to be a fan of a game is far less of a stretch.

you can be a fan of capeshit if all your knowledge of marvel & DC comes from the MCU & DCAU respectively and likewise you could be a fan of FF7 if you never played the PS1 game. it's not like advent children, dirge of cerebus or crisis core don't exist.

Everything up until the year 2000 or released on consoles that came before the year 2000. So you have all the 2D games and also a time when 3D games were still in an experimental stage. Games from 2008 could just as well come out today with a little graphical updating, while with "retro" games (as defined by this board) you can tell them are from a different time period. And yeah there's tons of good games from 6th and 7th gen also, it would be a good idea to have a board for that time period.

The real mystery is why so many people still rush to defend one of the dullest franchises of all time. Seriously each episode following the boy "adventurer" and his pals from Hyrule as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the cartoonish imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of repetitive puzzles, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Nintendo vetoed the idea of a third party producing the games; Miyanoto made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody- just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for their annual "party games" and childish fighting franchise. The Zelda series might be anti-Sony (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Spyro series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact.

>a-at least the platforming elements were good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the exploration was nonexistent. As I played, I noticed that every time Link went to "explore" a largely empty world, Nintendo shoehorned in some repetitive puzzles to pad out the game. I began marking on the back of a Nintendo Power magazine every time I came to the same rehashed box pushing/lever pulling puzzles. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nintendo's team is so governed by cliches and milking tired franchises ad nauseum that they have no other style of development. Later I watched a lavish, loving Let's Play of The Ocarina of Time by some YouTube manchild. He said something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Ocarina of Time at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to owning a Nintendo Switch." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play The Ocarina of Time you are, in fact, trained to play the same dull Nintendo rehashes decade after decade.

This, I'd say most RPG threads and their posts are by them. No coincidence that, whenever you see a new member making a thread asking about how to get into a genre, it's almost always RPGs.
Gen Z kids are more likely to like old RPGs because that's the closest old popular genre to how modern games work.
The more distant the genre is to that, the less activity (and more hate as a percentage of that activity) it sees.
As zoomers have taken over the board over time we've seen an increase in RPG content and outright dismisal of say arcade content, particularly shmups get the most hate, and even if there are already some millenials (and older) posters around most barely play and are more like the collector type. Those are the two main posters here: fake retro hipster RPG-loving zoomers and older people that have physical games from their childhood and prefer to replay and discuss their nostalgic games almost exclusively.

>>5237343
I've given an example with all these threads that show up. Ones that are like:
>I've never played an RPG, where should I start?
You see threads like these from time to time, and IMO it's quite obvious these are all young people getting into older games. They are attracted to RPGs because as I said, they're the closest older popular games to what they're used to.
Judging by what kind of stuff has been posted more and more (stuff that smells like it's coming from a more modern-minded view) I think these posters stay and have been increasing in number over time.
As for the other group, the reason is very simple: you see disproportionally more discussion for best selling games, even in a board that's been going on for a while, you'd thin that it'd diversify more over time as the regulars get a bit fed up of the same or try new things, but you don't see this much.
I didn't think explaining this much was necesary, isn't all of this obvious to everyone?

>>5237350
Octopath Traveller is quite close to 90's RPGs and came out this year with relative success. CRPGs have changed more indeed but those are less popular (the old ones), indeed they gravitate more towards 90's JRPGs.

However, JRPGs from the later half of the 90's are the closest thing (read: not exactly the same, but the closest there is) this board has to modern games and young people into modern games first get attracted to these, that's my point.
IMO the modern gaming landscape started to take shape globally with the PlayStation, and then would fully flourish in the 7th generation of consoles era. Since then, aside from some fads changing, it's stayed quite close. But to be fair we're still only a few years after the end of the 7th.

All of this is false because slow turned-based combat is a natural repellent to ADHD-riddled zoomers. The most zoomer-friendly retro games would be Doom, Half-Life and other FPS in my opinion. It's not like these games are any difficult either since you can savescum in them and trivialize any challenge. And this is supported by Doom recently becoming a meme on /v/ and being considered one of the best games ever despite being largely ignored back then.

i dont believe that rpgs of the 90s are all that common to what's around now. anything from undertale to witcher 3 is far different from whats back then and far more "modernized". i think the reason people get into it thru those is because ecelebs shill them (almost exclusively squenix and earthbound btw) and platformers, and platformers are an actual challenge and even more removed from modern tastes. also, rpg's are """more complex""" because they have lots of numbers and """"deep stories"""" or whatever, and that's bound to attract people. idk why people get so insecure about what they're into. probably high school mentality carried over

I'm guessing most retro zoomers got into it the way I did: they weren't impoverished but not very rich growing up, and so got older stuff that hit it's value floor, so they're already familiar. Because of the holidays, my cousins came to visit with my uncle.
They're 21, 19 and 13. I gave them one of my spare Super Nintendo with some games back in 2005 or so, when the 2 older ones were still toddlers. They always remember that with fondness and say they love the Super Nintendo. The older one has an Xbox One now, but he always says the Super Nintendo is the best. I incited nostalgia in a zoomer! heh.
But here's the funny thing, the youngest one is the one that knows more about retro, because of Youtube. The other day he was like "I love retro games! I want to buy a Sega Genesis", oh yeah and he also thinks PS2 is retro.
But he still knows more than the other 2, who besides the SNES because they had it, don't really care much, other than maybe curiosity.
Yesterday they came to my house and I made the younger one play Saturn with me, he said he wanted to play some fighting, so I showed him Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Vampire Savior.

Not them, but artificial difficulty can be many things from incompetent controls and layouts thereof, to in game timers, forcing players to make hasty decisions instead of plotting them out. Needless penalties also ramp up the difficulty to an artificial degree, like say, forcing a player to repeat from 6-1 all the way back to 6-3 on Ninja Gaiden NES just because you died on one of the bosses. Now that kind of difficulty is cheap and just wears on the player.

We never said "pee-ess-ex" in conversation, but it was the common abbreviation in old gaming magazines and Christmas shopping booklets until the PS2 came out. PS was never used, and frankly looks dumb. Just like we never said "ness", we called it a "Nintendo", it was called "en-ee-ess" once the Super Nintendo came out. However I never heard the "ess-en-ee-ess" until Youtubers started saying it. NES and SNES were common in magazines though.

You don't think people would have come to the conclusion of saying "SNES" like "sness" without seeing it in a Youtube video? >> No.5242290

>>5237383
it is but it's never used properly.
it's properly used to a fairly narrow set of game elements that make a game seem harder without actually being harder. RPGs may have "artificial difficulty" where gameplay dynamics stay the same but numbers get bigger, the animations get flashier, and battles might waste more of your time.

The problem is that 99% of the time, zoomers using the term "artificial difficulty" haven't properly evaluated the context of whatever mechanic they are bitching about (limited lives, meaningful chance/RNG elements, low tolerance for mistakes, or having to think about literally anything).

Also, people use the term "artificial difficulty" when they actually mean "accidental difficulty" which is when a game is hard because the developers were incompetent and designed the controls poorly or the content was designed carelessly.

>> No.5242301

>>5242270
>incompetent controls
>incompetent layouts
That is not artificial difficulty.
That is accidental difficulty. The difficulty is not fake. It's real. But it's just there by accident, not intent.
>to in game timers, forcing players to make hasty decisions instead of plotting them out.
This is not artificial at all. This is a great example of abusing the term artificial difficulty.
>Needless penalties also ramp up the difficulty to an artificial degree, like say, forcing a player to repeat from 6-1 all the way back to 6-3 on Ninja Gaiden NES just because you died on one of the bosses
Again, this is not artificial difficulty. It's just difficulty. The game is designed such that you are expected to master entire segments of the game at once.
Maybe it's poor design. Maybe it's tedious and that segment is too long. But labeling it "artificial difficulty" tells you nothing about why the design is bad in fact it carries with it a bunch of pointless baggage, and therefore shouldn't be used as criticism of Ninja Gaiden.

>> No.5242306

>>5242278
Nope. I appreciate arcade difficulty, but that was a home version that wasn't even close to being based on the original. I can beat that game's ass, but it's still cheap at times.

>>5242281
You cannot honestly compare overly large hitboxes to literally forcing artificial fatigue on the player. Making the player go through previous levels does nothing but punish and like I said, also gives fatigue, thus it makes the game harder on an artificial level. The enemies aren't smarter; the levels aren't ever more ingenious, and the goals haven't fundamentally shifted, it's just pure bullshit.

Irrelevant. I was playing those games when they came out, it doesn't matter IF someone could hypothetically come to the conclusion of calling it that, but in reality that's not what happened. The thing I most identify with zoomers is this odd mentality that all older games are poorly designed. Not that they were made for a different time, where people (mostly kids, let's be honest, you were a weirdo if you played video games into your 20s) enjoyed them in that way. They believe that modern games are the best and things like lives and limited continues were just "primitive callbacks to coin-munching arcade games" or "made intentionally hard to sell players guides". When in actuality, games like Wizards and Warriors bored me to tears as a kid with its infinite lives and no penalty respawn points.

While beating Contra on that last fucking life was exhilarating, because I had gotten there before and died already making me play through the game again, which I did with gusto while I yelled all the cuss words a 7 year old me knew at the Red Falcon or whatever the fuck it was called.

Also, with the entire power of the internet and every single instruction booklet being a Google search away, they're too lazy to read what you fucking expected to have read on the drive home from the video game/toy store... and then bitch and complain that "the game never told me that!" when it's in the fucking manual.

The early 80s were a different time, the world was SIGNIFICANTLY less globalized. Even Hollywood movies were usually less popular with people than local media. Americans consumed American media, Europeans consumed European, Latin-Americans consumed Latin American (believe it or not Brazil had a decent inner market of home computer and SMS games). Video games were no exception, there was no world video game crash... just an American one.

Even in Canada, Atari 2600, Colecovision and Intellivision game market didn't take that big of a hit (although admittedly much fewer games were imported... which was a quality filter)... the only thing Nintendo did to "save" the industry was very tactfully package their product to fool amerifats that it wasn't Japanese. As far as Canuckland we just saw video games slow to a trickle but despite popular belief, there WERE American console games made after the "crash", until Nintendo slapped them off the planet with their Godzilla cock.

Get a load of this zoomer.
The whole "omg brazil LOVES the master system!" is a meme. Yes, Master System was locally released officially in Brazil through TecToy, who acquired the license, but this wasn't the 80s, it was in the 90s. And the truth is that, despite TecToy licensing SMS, Mega Drive and even Saturn, the true most popular console in the late 80s and early 90s in Brazil (and most other LA countries) was the Family Game (chinese clone of the Famicom). Cheap, it was everywhere, and games were very easy to find. Did I say it was cheap?
Also, the "brazil-exclusive" SMS games were just a few reskins of other games.
People like to romanticize the whole TecToy SMS thing, but in truth it wasn't really all that popular here, I believe the Master System was more popular in Europe.
Here it was all about the Family Game, then the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, both were very popular, then Playstation 1.

This is complete bullshit. Zoomers loathe turn-based combat, with a few exceptions like Pokemon. They want instant gratification and le ebic plays to put on their Twitch stream or youtube. Classic JRPGs are too slow-paced and boring for them. Modern movie-games are different because they actually constantly pelt you with shit happening on the screen and QTEs instead of the slow, measured, planning based gameplay of JRPGs. /v/ cheered on the FFVII remake en masse because it rehashed the battle system.

Video games is one of the most discussed topics. It makes sense that there's a couple boards dedicated to it.
If you ask me, 6th genners should content themselves with being able to discuss their shit on /v/ and /vg/, but if they want an exclusive boards like /vr/, then the best solution is /v2k/.

I doubt that's why. It's more likely because they devolve into people mocking "gay elf quests" and "jarpigs." Or people preemptively complain about shmup players and bring out those discussions. I don't even know if it's true that threads get deleted that much. There's still a couple in the archive right now.

Because whining about using savestates is retarded. They are for convenience so you can learn sections of games quicker. Of course, I don't condone using them in full, legit runs.

Assuming I'm a zoomer that missed out on the arcade culture (which you're wrong about, but anywho), what is there to be "known"? Are you implying that competition could only occur during the '90s? That you can't still compete in those games now for some reason? Your retarded argument makes no sense.
By the way, zoomers do not give a shit about arcade culture, much less improving at difficult games.

>Thing is, I was there, playing the kind of games you like, way before you discovered emulation and the fact that you can LARP as a "hardcore gamer" on 4chan.
1. It doesn't matter claiming you played them back then, what matters is if you were/are relevant in the scene.
2. It's not a LARP if you possess the skills to back it up, like many people at your loathed /vg/ general have.
