The system is called "The Sega Master System". What happened was Sega meant it in the same vein as the Nintendo Entertainment System, except swapping Entertainment for Master to sound cooler. The consumers misunderstood it as "The Master System (by Sega)", so they decided to just run with it instead of trying to fight it. Hence why early promotional material shortens it to "The Sega System" while everything after that calls it "The Master System".

To anyone that thinks it isn't called the Master System (initially the Mark III) go to the USPTO site and do a lookup. The Mark III rebranding will always be a Master System. The Master System exists as much as the Master System II. It has a patent, try and prove that one away.

"the sega system" was a name for the combination of the individual parts to their system starting with the Master System, not the console name. The "MEGA cart" is also a part of that, SEGA light phazer, SEGA Card, SEGA 3-d glasses, SEGA Paddle Control, SEGA Handle Control... all a part of it. There are 55 individual SMS compatible parts to their idea "the sega system" including more when including any Genesis designs that ended up being backwards compatible (the idea was "the sega system" would be forwards compatible, not back)

The idea was to keep one set of controllers and devices that could be cross used for ages to come on Sega devices so your old shit wasn't tossed out. Not what any individual part of any specific console was called, a name for a connection idea.

Hint: That is why so much stuff is cross compatible with Genesis/Megadrive, Master System, SG1000-III.

There were two versions of this console, one that came with a bundle, and one that were barebones.

The one that came with as a bundle was called "The Sega Master System". So everyone started to call it "Master System".

That lead SEGA to do a rebrand, calling it "Master System". Both are right, but "Sega System" was called like that for a very short period of time. So only the first version of it is the "Sega System". The other iterations are called Master System.

Everyone call it Master System, because that's the rebranded name.
