As much as I adore that game, I completely agree anon. The backtracking and graphics have aged like milk. The "stealth" is kind of a joke. Furthermore, I can't help but hate how MGS ushered in the modern bullshit of games being "cinematic experiences" where gameplay and any sense of real change takes a back seat to mediocre storytelling. At the time though, MGS was unique and awesome. All those codec conversions were lovely.

Actually yes, it's a good game. Pubg is generic, COD's battle royale is just H1Z1 with better movement, but Fortnite at least adds some gimmicks and is fun to play.

The answer is simple.

1. Fallout released the same year.
2. Fallout was a PC exclusive in an era where people were much more likely to game on their consoles than their PCs.
3. Fallout was also a much harder game.

Final Fantasy VII popularized turn-based games not because it was a good turn-based game. Final Fantasy VII has garbage combat, as a matter of fact. So braindead that even its most difficult optional bosses can easily be killed with a handful of materia. Final Fantasy VII popularized story-driven JRPGs, nothing more, nothing less.

People still refused to play turn-based cRPGs, because

1. They were not story driven for the most part.
2. They were difficult.
3. They were on PC.

Final Fantasy VII has awful combat. It has a nice world and a very convoluted story, though. That gets people going.
