>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Manual shows it uses "1-570-101-41" for some and "1-570-969-11" for others.
41 is used for most of the buttons, 11 is used specifically for Up, Down, Menu, and Select.

No idea if either of these actually have said parts, but the only real hits I'm finding.

Hard to say really. I think the current market is fair. No. NO. What's frightening is how possible this is, like when they mentioned the indie comic book "Saga" on Big Bang Theory, and then suddenly, graded copies of issue 1 were going for $400+. honestly no. There's so many consumer sets out there that are high quality in the free-$20. at some point it will just be a novelty to have one. Believe me, the crt snobs on /vr/ are a minority within even the retro gaming scene. much less broader gaming.

arcade monitors have been much more sought after for many more years than consumer televisions and they cap out at about $300 for good condition and $500 if you can find a "new" one.

maybe a really desirable television would go for a few hundred in 10-15 years.

It wouldn't matter if you weren't, eventually gonna happen anyway. Once boomer nostalgia kicks in full fucking force for all the 90s kids (I imagine most 80s boomers already have their CRTs), and once the demand is there, small businesses and general suppliers of goods are going to get wise, and it's only a snowball effect from there.
Did you know you can buy new vinyl records in major department stores these days? Give it 20 years and you might be able to buy freshly manufactured CRTs. Stranger shit has happened.

>> No.5223150

they're too heavy to ship. Like i said, arcade monitors are sought after and the boards can be shipped separate from the tubes and most new boards are $100-ish dollars. why there isn't more arcade crt discussion in these threads is beyond me. You can hook consoles up to them fine and there's wayy more resources on how to maintain and troubleshoot them than consumer sets.

If you really want to speculate, start grabbing late model <13" sets. Curved tube is better, rgb moddable even better. Something that can small can be shipped for ebay RETRO L@@K prices.

Picked up a Dell Ultrascan P1110 for free a while back because the screen bezel was cracked. took it apart and adjusted focus and convergence as best I could, but it's hard to get it perfect across the whole screen; it's a little worn out and was obviously abused, but it's only really apparent when you're looking at black text on a white background. Yo dawg, how much did you pay? You can get them premodded for $150... on the high end.

Most likely they used a different version of sync than expected. Did you try hooking the 64 to different devices? Did you try another scart or even an hdretrovision cable? My bet is still them using the wrong sync. I remember a big issue with people completely cutting the composite lead out as it was interfering with some PVM/PCCRT

Also what RGB mod? The TWRGB mod is far better than the basic THS7316 mod.

I'm trying to use my Guncon 2 on PS2 through YPbPr to play the Gunbari Collection. I got the gun for almost free in a bundle years ago but neglected the splitter cable the seller had. Since I own a PVM that has outputs for the RGB/Component, I figure I can just hook up to the Y output and use it for the sync signal right? I don't have the game yet but I tested it out and it sucked the color out of the picture. I figure this has something to do with auto termination stopping since I plugged in one output but the not the rest, right? Do I need some 75 ohm terminators?

that's just how it works. has more to do with TVL. Look at Rami's ears and see how the bright white ears have blooming, the blank line is still visible but much less so compared to neighboring colors. To me this is a defining aspect of CRT and does make me favor shadowmask over aperture grille. A lower TVL AG will still have visible blank lines but less blooming, even at smaller sizes (to an extent obviously.)

That's going to depend a lot more on how you'd prefer to use/play said console. HDMI has it's benefits in being able to go straight through to a display and some of the other built in enhancements, but you lose the ability to use it on any of your SD equipment. NESRGB may not have said enhancements, but doesn't really mess around with any timings and given you already have access to high quality scalers would still allow you to get a decent experience with both SD and HD displays.

For which console, that's gonna really be which ever you prefer. Aside from slightly differing installation requirements, the results you get should be entirely the same.

I personally don't really mess with upscaling and the like, so I'd likely go for the RGB mod. As for which console design, I've only ever had a front loader, but a top loader would likely look a tad nicer.

Personally I RGB'ed mine because to me, CRT is essential to enjoying retro games. Figure out what display you will be playing it on and go for that.

I like the toploader since you don't have the 72 pin funkyness. That said, I also have a non modded front loader that I play on a composite only TV, so it really depends on what you want. If you want modern screen, go HDMI. If you want retro screen, I'd almost say, skip the mod and just use composite. It honestly looks fine on NES front loader.

If all you care about is playing games and having original hardware isn't important, and you are on modern screens, an AVS fits the bill nicely.

It does. Watching DVD old school anime on a PVM or BVM is utterly jaw dropping. I have the dragon box set and you can literally see the animation cells. At times it's like watching the cells move in stop motion rather than how you normally perceive a cartoon in motion. It really helped me appreciate the animation style of dragon ball z. It's a little "janky" yet it is so elegant how they pull off the effects with limited frames and budget. Don't get me wrong, it goes from jaw dropping to something that looks super low budget, but it's all amazing to witness. Hell, some scenes even put a red light under the cell to achieve the effect of glowing eyes. I never noticed this before and it's kind of a testament to the quality that was possible on crts.

What sort of set do you have, and where are the speakers located at on the set.

A random guess without any additional knowledge would be that the speakers are the set are likely not shielded and could be causing purity issues. The reason it may come and go is the magnets in them generating a slightly larger/stronger magnetic field depending on the audio that is being played. Said increased magnetism would be enough to throw off the landing of the beam close by.

5232139

I asked this a few threads ago, but I was incredibly vague and maybe with pictures I can expand on what I meant.
My audio, even when turned down very low on the slider, is BLARING loud. I have my GameCube hooked up with my Gameboy Player and was trying to play Golden Sun but the audio is so obnoxiously loud that I'm not even going to bother. It's somewhat quieter when I play my SNES for example, but not by much; still bothersome. I thought it was could be my SCART switcher (for some reason) but I've tried two different ones now and can confirm that's not the issue.

It could probably be several different issues causing this, the speakers, my hookups, the TV, or maybe even just retro consoles in general doing this but I don't know, I'd really like to fix this because I am kinda getting annoyed at this point. It seems like the sounds should be quieter and it's frustrating because I don't know what and how I can get it to be.
The cord in the picture is the one I use to hook up to the TV and for my speakers. It has a audio breakout cables so maybe that could be another possible issue (?)

Also, pls go easy on me. Kinda a dunce when it comes to this shit.

For the FD/Wega Sonys, any set with FM, FS, or FV in the name are going to be standard definition, and have no lag.
Any with HS, HV, or XS in the name are going to be HD.
XBR is a bit of a mix. XBR200 and XBR250 are SD sets; The rest of the silvery design flat XBRs are HD.

With the exception of the 34XBR2, if it's flat and silver cased, a number above 350 is going to be HD, a number below 350 is going to be SD.

Kind of ticked off by my geometry. it looks great for 240p and pic related is the test suite in 480i outputting at 240p but jesus if i try to play something else its fucked. HD CRTs don't have scanlines. Games that aren't 6th gen are going to look like shit. If you look at the specs of a set and you see it does 480p, that's an HD CRT. It's the best possible option for component 480p, but that's all it does.

I've got an 34XBR and I'm not sure if its a geometry issue because it gets worse depending on the console, but the TV seems to struggle with nes and snes, it gets blurry depending on what's on the screen, and some parts of the screen are stretched. I believe that's because HD CRTs have one native resolution and emulate all the others, poorly. My SD CRT died and I'm having to make do with this shit for the moment. Fatal Frame 3 in 480p looks fucking amazing, though.

It arrived in one piece and I'm pretty happy with it. Has a problem with the power button though. Instead of powering off it just resets the TV like 9/10 times. I can't seem to change it by pressing the button any differently. Just seems to do what it wants, and when it powers back on I manually have to crank the contrast as it resets to 0. Anybody know what this is? More likely a mechanical problem or bad capacitors? I figure getting a remote could be a good workaround.
Also how necessary is a recap? I've got some wavy geometry on the right side. It's not horrible and I can live with it but it won't kick the bucket soon because of some old 1980s caps will it?

As for your issues, start by looking up a service manual for it and see what you can find out about it.

Good luck with it

Thanks anon. I opened it up earlier to check how bad the dust situation was and it was pretty severe. I blew a lot of cobwebs out with what little canned air I had left but since I don't want to die I didn't do much more, but it's still pretty bad in there and the board is just coated in it. I didn't notice any particular caps that looked swollen or busted bad but it was tough to tell beneath all the dust and I don't have a trained eye for it. I couldn't find a service manual, but the user manual did mention something about powering the TV on and them using the remote to handle powering on/off, like the on board control handles a main power function and the remote handles a secondary power function, so for whatever problem it's having with the power button I think ordering remote is my best bet.
Any tips for cleaning the inside of the thing without dying? Like I can't just leave it that filthy in good conscience.

I did as you suggested and there's kind of an improvement. I dusted with a makeup brush and the board is looking much better. Again, didn't notice any obviously bad caps. I managed to pull the board away from the power button and dusted between the two. It seems to power off more reliably now but I have to be really quick with the button. If I press it a split second longer than necessary, it will just reset the TV. That suggests to me it's a problem with the button or the switch, which is good to know. Still have to crank contrast every time I turn it on though.
Thanks again anon.

Page 23 of that manual details it; On the B-Board. Looks like it likely uses Red as a reference, and then you adjust Green and Blue from there.

If leaving it on to warm up, that hints to aging caps being partially responsible. In turn, if applying force to different connectors/knobs affects things, that's a sign of either those knobs being gunked up or their simply being a bad connection somewhere with in that circuit; The latter of which is actually very common on the 5'' and 8'' sets.

If you're looking to use it for movies and the like, or 1080i and -maybe- 480p stuff, it'll be nice. It doesn't treat 240p the greatest, and has a few frames of delay depending on what signal you're feeding; 3 for 240p/480i, 2 for 480p, (presumably) 720p, and 1080i by default, and 0-1 with some tweaks but only for 1080i/540p.

Look up psychoacoustics and inter-aural differences. Pretty much, your tv uses the built in 2.1 or sometimes 2.0 speakers to push audio in a way that tricks you into a more encompassing sound in a room. It crosses over with a way of pushing audio that travels indirectly first, usually hitting walls or surroundings before you. You can probably find binaurel audio videos on youtube that with headphones sound like hundreds of points of audio, your tv virtual surround is a less good version of that. Still found on tvs to this day.

Simply put, fake surround sound that works sort of good actually.

Biggest issue is sometimes needing the volume higher which doesn't sound loud to you, but in another room will be very loud. Also accuracy of reproduction can be lowered, but with built in tv speakers, accuracy probably isn't on your mind.

bnc is the name of the plug. That specific plug sends the same information as the standard yellow rca plug, composite video, which sends the color, brightness, and sync signals down one wire. The s-video input is called a DIN connector, and sends the brightness and color signals down separate wires, so there is less interference between them, and you get a better image. There are a few other types of signals and connectors, so I encourage you to look them up.

I want to connect my megadrive to my PVM, but the only way it seems is to buy a breakout cable with female scart and BNC connectors on end, considering I wasn't to connecting using a switchbox that means additional adapters inbetween.

My question is, how hard would it be to make my own component cable from a regular megadrive scart cable?

It would be great but the BNC plugs don't fit into my switchbox, I need standard cinch connectors.

Also my plan was to get a scart megadrive cable, cut off the scart connector and attach cinch plugs on the ends, but I don't think it's as simple as that, I want to know what's necessary to make it work.

If all else fails I'll just get a breakout adapter and cut the BNC plugs and replace them with cinch connectors.

I don't know how to make genesis RGB signal into Component. It's obviously possible seeing as HD Retrovision does it. My guess is they put a RGB to component circuit into the black box on the cable. There are schematics out there, I think the (shitty) neo geo forum has one, but you have to be a member to see said diagram.

I'm not sure what you mean by "standard cinch connectors". If you mean RCA jacks, they make BNC to RCA adapters that are less than $1 each. Google "BNC to RCA" and you'll get several results, there are male and female versions.

There are RGB to component adapters like the retrotek ones, but cost $80 (very fine product though).

Just so we have the info needed to help you: What type of switch box do you have? What physical connection is it's input and output? What connection at your TV/monitor? What signals are you trying to pass from your console (guessing RGB) and what do you want your TV to receive (you said component but I'm double checking you actually mean it)?

>I need an extra circuit board to change the rgb (scart) signal to component then I'm just gonna call it quits, buy the breakout adapter and the BNC to RCA adapters.

OK, stupid question, ignore the cable type. Does your PVM accept RGB input?

If it does stop talking about component, it's a video signal, nothing to do with the cable ends.

That cheap piece of shit (thanks for pic) should just be a pass through, meaning you need another line for sync information.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're either gonna need a hd retrovision cable to use that switch or you're going to need an external rgb to component converter.

If you're using a PVM, why not just get a scart to bnc breakout cable (or make one)? Your pvm should accept RGB, just bypass that shitty switcher you're using if you want to play in RGB on your pvm.

At this point, you honestly should just buy the scart to bnc breakout cable. You can use it on other consoles too if you need to justify the price. Scart isn't magic, but it's the easiest/cheapest way to get pre made cables for retro consoles.

Just go console > rgb scart cable > Scart to BNC breakout cable > PVM. In the future you can get something like the bandridge scart selector if you get tired of unplugging cables, but for this you'll also need the breakout cable.

It is. I connect my Wii and PS2 using component cables so it helps by not having to keep plugging and unplugging consoles all the time.

I might do this.

Not really worth it, the megadrive is the only one that apparently needs scart (unless I use composite) so I'll jump through some hoops to make it work with my current setup instead of investing in a new one.

>How do I make one?

You have to be handy and know soldering. Basically you order a female scart end and cut a monoprice bnc cable in half. Those cables cost $10-12 or so, female ends are $2-3, so you can make 2 (by cutting the monoprice cable in half) for about $18. You then wire them up appropriately. If you're not going to need a bunch (like for using an extron switcher or multiple pvms) you would be better off just buying a scart to bnc for around $30. Again, this connector will let you use other rgb scart systems if you ever get them in the future.

Honestly there is nothing magical about scart, but since it's an off the shelf connector, it's mainly just useful for buying pre made cables and such. There are also cables that go directly from genesis to bnc, so if you don't want to use other rgb scart consoles, you might be better off doing this. There's some ebay seller that makes them (wookiewin I think) or retro gaming cables uk. Look on retrorgb for links to these sellers, I'm too lazy to look them up right now.

Genesis has pretty great rgb output so I hope you get it all sorted out.

Here is another seller: https://retro-access.com/products/genesis-1-bnc-and-rca-cable-pro-coaxial-multicore-for-pvm-monitor-and-extron

Found a jvc tm-h1950cg with the RGB card in the back for 100$. Anybody have experience with these monitors? is this a deal?

I figured outputting 480i would be good enough for GameCube games that I want it for and that an actual 240p capable solution would be far too expensive. Would it even be possible on a TV that only has composite input?

Only asking here because I expect at least one of you to have been in this situation.

I have crazy good scart cables for my DC. Considering beharbros vga or hdmi solution for when I am not using scart or want 480p. Besides waiting for hdretrovision cables to release, is there a better alternative to beharbros? I heard they were the best for several years, yet sometimes see people talking as if they are not.

OEM DC VGA box is MIA and my backup VGA box is pretty mediocre at solid colors and video noise (including audio hum that sounds like a ground loop). Have lots of scalers/converters, so really just looking to see if beharbros is best and should I do vga or hdmi.

Pic related. Secondary box I bought 8-9 years ago in case I needed it. Just opened it and it is shit (but pretty good for $20, lol)

I have a 14L5 and a progressive scan DVD player.
progressive scan looks good on movies, but not on dvds of tv shows that were created specifically for 480i
for interlaced content, a lower tv-line model would probably look better actually

not sure how much of an heresy it is to ask this around here but - i've been setting up shaders for all platforms i've got configured, and the one generation that i'm lost on is psx / n64 / jaguar / 3do. i really have no idea how tvs looked like around the time of their release, and can't recall how my 2000s triniton was. anyone got any pointers? were tv's much more"crystal clear" by then? rgb and all... i'm leaving them with no shader for now, but i've got a feeling they could work better with one. cause it does do wonders for immersion with nes, for example.

Has anybody ever gotten a pvm shipped to them with no damage? What would you recommend I tell the shipper when he packs it?

Not a PVM but a computer monitor. They sent it in a wooden box like this, with pillows around the monitor. Maybe an overkill but it worked.

I got one shipped in a patchy cardboard box made of two smaller ones and wrapped in tape like a cocoon.
On the inside the PVM was wrapped in old newspaper.

When I saw the package I was sure the PVM was kill but to my great surprised it arrived intact.

So maybe the delivery guys were careful, of the PVMs are stronger than they seem or I just got lucky.

I have had more than a few CRTs shipped to me and shipped out. It is a lot of luck that the shippers don't do anything. However, if you tell him bubblewrap the entire thing, then box it, then get a bigger box for that box with padding as a buffer between the two boxes, there isn't really a way to damage it. The issue is cost being $50 or so more, maybe higher, than the already high cost of shipping.

Can anyone confirm if this is an SD CRT, AKA it has scanlines?

This is a model released outside the US, so there's no easy to check list for the model. It's a KV-34FV15B. From what I've seen on similar models, its not an HD set. I ask because the guy lives an hour away, I don't wanna drive there to get fucked again, I've made that mistake with a XBR set before.

>> No.5272406

Anyone do any basic soldering or repairs successfully on a TV with little experience? I posted this before, but I've got an old Walmart-brand CRT TV that just has problems with the audio jack and don't want to screw it up.

Since then I've tried a little electronics project for soldering experience, but it didn't pan out well.

>> No.5272414

>>5272316
Scanlines on most crt's don't really look like how they're represented on emulator filters. Your CRT has scanlines that's just how it displays the image, but whether it produces noticable black lines between them or not should be obvious by looking at it

Essentially the monitor on the left in the OP. That price is an absolute steal.

>>5272316
huehuehue?

If so, it's likely just the BR version of the 32FV15, which is an SD set. You're not gonna get meme-tier scamlimes out of it though.

>>5272406
If it's a bad audio connector, where if you wobble the cable it cuts out, that's likely just a cold solder joint, and would be easily fixable with minimal experience.

>>5272423
Okay, thanks. I'll have to muster up the courage to take it apart and see if I can fix it.

It’s only tangentially related but I think you guys are my best shot.

I’m looking for a quality DVD player for my CRT that is region free and would only be used for 480i content. I’d need component output. Every discussion around quality DVD players I can find seems to go into internal upscaling and deinterlacing, since I’m EXCLUSIVELY using this unit to output 480i, I wont make use of any of that. Any ideas?

My Megaview 29 had the sync cable short out and messed it up. Picture went sideways and discombobulated. Over on reddit someone recommended I bring it to Anadalusia TV repair in Besalem, PA, so I did. They diagnosed it for about $50 and said it was the signal input board and they could rebuild it for ~$675. Also had a second one that I bought from some guy that never worked and they said it had the same problem and they could fix that one too for $675. So I told them to go ahead and they're going to order some chips and fix the boards. I get a 1 year warranty. Just want to let you guys know that need a CRT repaired how much it costs. There was another guy doing CRT repair in NYC but he shut down in early December unfortunately.

Yeah, I'm a huefag. I've found some info on the model, so indeed it just seems to be the BR variant. That's ok, I'm not expecting memetastic image quality without a PVMeme, though I've seen some autistic reddit posts that said you can increase the thickness of scanlines on Trinitrons through a service menu option. Seemed pointless, and also needs to be done everytime you turn it on.
