My dad wants to get back into video games he loved Zelda a link to the past because he likes solving puzzles and good stories but he's not as good as he was before (he reacts a bit slow in games) I've been thinking about getting him into earthbound because you don't have to react fast for jrpgs

Is this a good idea?

No, RPGs suck ass. Buy him a version of Truxton instead; you want to hone is reflexes, not ape to their lowest potential.

Mark is one of the OG's in game review videos and he mentions Truxton as much as possible, for almost 15 years now.

Is that supposed to be amazing? Most of them do come with a manual. SEGA had the best cases.

I don't think you really have to worry about your reflexes slowing until you're literally elderly. The last five or so years prior to death is when the body starts to gradually shut itself down, this is called "terminal drop".

If I recall correctly, human cognition is pretty much steady-state from the ages of 25 to 59. There tends to be a small drop in cognitive function in the 60s and a bigger drop after 70.

well the grindy-ness might turn him off.

let him play link to the past again. if he has already done that, try the minish cap.

they aren't twitchy games. your dad can get used to them if he spends a little time on it.

or try final fantasy 6 (aka 3 for u.s. snes) and turn off the active and turn on "wait" on the battle options.

GOOF TROOP SNES

Zelda-like game + puzzles. And a fun co-op mode. Such a great game for dads.

Earthbound has zero grinding after you finish Onett. It's actually one of the best designed JRPGs I've ever played in that regard. It's a rough start, but after that the level curve is perfect so that if you're at least exploring a bit you will never have to stop and grind and you'll have a smooth difficulty curve the whole way through.

Wild Arms is a good bet if you have a PS1.

If not, try Lufia 2. It's definitely a slower pace and it has puzzles.

Don't do this. Terranigma is inconsistent as fuck with mediocre repetitive gameplay.

The guy that recommended professor layton was pretty on point.

Have you thought about Strategy RPGs? Vandal Hearts or Tactics Ogre might be worth looking into. FFT would also be solid, but you'll need to look into version differences depending on how you feel he'd like the dialog style.

Unfortunately there aren't all that many where the plot is actually decent enough to recommend.

That drop-off is so minor that it only affects people who play games that require extremely reflexes like Beatmania or competitive Starcraft.

I'm 28 and played FPS games for about 15 too. I can top the scoreboard in multiple games and still get accused of cheating. Reflexes still seem to be good on top of being able to play with a bit more complexity.

Absolutely. I'm turning 50 in a few weeks and my reaction time has dropped to millennilevels. 265 drunk 235 in between. But fuck me, I can "react" faster than my kids with better times. Did some tests with one of them. Turns out I'm actually listening to his controller input. The human brain is fucking amazing. We'll need to put on ear muffs and blankets over our heads for a "real" test.

>> No.5230474

Bullshit, I'm better than I've ever been at first person shooters, and it's not because I began to play with analog stick + mouse (What? It's really comfortable!), no, it's because I practice a lot and take method and tactics to heart. What enemies does what, what can I count on my weapons to do for me, how can I use my environment to my advantage? Etc. I was absolutely rotten at FPS as a little kid (and most games, actually), but I worked to improve, and today I'm better than ever.

If you keep yourself sharp, you'll stay good until you're real old. For that matter, stimulating your brain with play and problem solving ensures your mind stays mint longer, even if your body gets weak.
Like even just plain puzzle games go a long way to keep you honed, which is why your mom playing Bejeweled or Scrabble is actually good.

If his dad liked ALTTP he could also check out ALBW on the 3DS, it's vaguely a remake but with new elements. About the same level of skill.
Not retro, but close enough to the old game to be worth comparing to.

>>5227515
>written well enough to keep anyone motivated
It's quirky and charming, if not for the story itself, then for the world and presentation.
There's also lots of musical and movie references which he might pick up on and appreciate as well, particularly if middle aged.

>because it's pretty low on grinding
It's not like some MMO brundlefuck or anything, but Earthbound will demand a bunch grinding out of you at certain places.

>> No.5230803

Big deal. War Thunder, Battlefield, Combat Arms have lots of players in their 50s, 60s, even some in their 70s.
