5221414 No.5221414 [Reply] [Original]

1. Does cutting the pin on the 10NES chip have any negative effects? Will I lose any compatibility with games or addons/accessories?

2. Is it possible to connect the Famicom Disk System to the NES?

3. Which NES variants including Famicoms have jailbars on composite and which don't? Assume they've all been modded for composite.

4. Is the connector on the bottom of the original NES used for anything?

>1. Does cutting the pin on the 10NES chip have any negative effects
Yes, if you consider that your NES will now be technically worth less than an un-modded, that's a negative side effect, also if you do it wrong, you could brick your NES.

>>5221414
>Is it possible to connect the Famicom Disk System to the NES?
Yes, you need a top-loading NES and Famicom to NES game adapter. It will not work with the regular American NES.

>>5221414
>Is the connector on the bottom of the original NES used for anything?
Not that I know of.

Someone on Youtube is claiming that it can work with a regular NES too: here's the quote: >"It can work on the toaster, but you need a little red hood cartridge because of the slot on the top, you do it like this: put the little red hood cartridge in the nes then put the 72-60 pin adaptor [sic] on the top of the cartridge then put the disk drive conector [sic] on the adaptor[sic]"

1. Yes, it serves no purpose. It doesn't help games load. Only properly cleaning the original 72 pin connector and the games will. Don't replace the original with knock offs. Only blinking light win is an acceptable 3rd party replacement.

2. Yes, but it's a pain in the ass. Get an AV famicom and an fdsstick for $12.

3. originals frontloaders are pretty good jailbar wise. If you properly mod a toploader you can get rid of jail bars. If you ask, I'll post how to do this tomorrow, just ask, I'm too tired to do it tonight, almost falling asleep. It's cheap as hell to do and you won't have jailbars.

4. Not really, but you can get expansion audio boards that add it there instead of modding the board. If you're interested in FDS you need to mod for expansion audio unless using a famicom.

Again, if you're still around, just ask me to post the jailbar free toploader mod and I'll do it.

me again, forgot to add, if you only want to play famicom and FDS games, N8 is a decent option if you expansion audio mod the cart and the nes. The audio volume level isn't 100% perfect, but it's pretty good.

FDS are finicky as fuck btw. If you ever replace the belt, they can be a real bitch to get to sync up again. You'll be greeted with load errors of all types. That's why I suggested the FDS stick. If you just want to play the games, this or the N8 is the most straight forward option.

If you play wisdom tree games it will literally catch on fire without the chip. True story.

Everyone says toploaders have jailbars. They do unless you know what the hell you are doing. This isn't a full tutorial because I will help, but not spoon feed. Study this link: https://web.archive.org/web/20110802065924/http://www.dutchretrogamer.nl/nes2_avmod_eng.html then build the mod board they tell you to. If you use your head, you'll be able to make this board smaller. Look at pic related, you can make this board 6 "rows" tall and 3 or 4 "holes" wide. Just know each component can share a column of holes.

So you've made that. Good. Now either lift pin 21 or cut it from the PPU. You are a hack if you cut it and you lose the little respect I have for you. That said, if you can't solder or desolder, it's probably better for the unskilled to cut the pin as flush with the board as you can. Scratch that, if you can't be arsed to learn to solder and practice on junk, you have no business modding a console. Look up EEVBLOG and voultar on youtube and learn to fucking solder.

PPU pin 21 MUST be lifted or you WILL HAVE JAILBARS. Pin 21 lifted = NO jailbars, pin 21 not lifted = jailbars. Period. That's the secret to jailbars on a toploader. Anyone who tells you you don't have to lift 21 is a fucking liar or dumb.

OK, now that you made the circuit and lifted 21, IGNORE EVERYTHING from that site I linked. Solder the "IN" on that circuit DIRECTLY to lifted pin 21. Use a pin header leg or capacitor leg if you have to. The key is, unamplified video picks up jailbars so you want NO LENGTH of unamplified line in your console. If you use even an inch of wire, you will have jailbars, period. Stick the mod board to the top of the PPU with GOOD double sided tape.

Pull power and audio from where that site says. Ground at the nearest ground you find using a multimeter or schematics. Use a TRRS jack (retrofixes sells a kit) and put it in the old hole where the RF jack went after removing it from the board.

100% reversible mod, jailbar free.

This is what the back of your modded toploader will look like if you know what you are doing. Everything else looks 100% stock. you can reverse the mod and no one knows the difference. Also, while you have the board open do the exp audio mod if you plan on playing FDS stuff with expansion audio, even from an N8.

If your console has jacks cut into it and RCA plugs sticking out of it, you are a hack and have no business modding any console.

NES is mono audio but you can wire both "sides" to audio on the NES if you want.

Don't be an idiot. Jailbars have nothing to do with clean contacts. They are from interference picked up on the video line and/or from the circuitry itself.

Your contacts must be clean, but again that has NOTHING to do with jailbars, it's a totally separate issue.

Can FDS stick also play the whole NES library like the N8? How does it deal with mapper chips? Are there hacked ROMs?

Does the FDS stick have the expansion FDS audio?

What about games with special audio chips like Akumajou Dracula?

I have to decide whether to keep my NES and get an N8, or sell it and get an AV famicom+FDSstick.

It does exp audio. It is simply a floppy drive emulator, won't play other games. Think of it as a flash cart that plugs into the fds ram adapter (which you need).

It will play the FDS games exactly as if they were being read from the discs.

Cool, I will save this info.

So toploaders have jailbars when you mod them for composite. I assume they always have them but the RF shitnal hides it.

My NES frontloader seems to have very minimal jailbars in composite that aren't noticeable during play.

What about the original Famicom (composite modded), AV Famicom, and Twin Famicom? How strong are the jailbars on each?

Is it possible to use the FDSstick with the Twin Famicom instead of the floppy? The AV Famicom is fucking hideous IMO.

>> No.5222541

>>5221774
Toploaders will always have jailbars when modded for composite, unless you mod how that post says. Toploaders have very pronounced jailbars even over RF.

Yep, front loaders have very minimal jailbars, to the point you can easily ignore them or might never notice them unless you're looking hard for them.

Original Famicom has the worst jailbars of the "NES" line that I've seen. Even after modding you can't really get rid of them, but you can get them to where you can live with them. There are guides on eliminating jailbars on FC. I tried about 4 different "methods" and combinations of them and nothing got rid of them entirely. I'll post a little text dump of my experiences modding one in a reply to this. I've never worked with AV FC or Twin FC so I won't speak on them.

You can use the FDS with Twin FC but I think you have to make some kind of adapter cable. You should research this because I'm not totally sure how difficult it is. I saw it mentioned but it didn't apply to what I needed so I skipped the rest.

Just some FYI on AV modding an original Famicom. This is shit: https://assemblergames.com/threads/guide-av-mod-your-famicom.49263/ This is better: https://jpx72web.blogspot.com/2016/11/famicom-av-mod-new.html Second link is as good as the route I went, though arguably slightly more jailbars.

I actually used this: http://trolsoft.ru/ru/articles/famicom-av-mod . Use google translate. I bought 2 boards for $17 and the dude speaks english. I can say this kit works well.

What I learned about jail bars: Wrapping the PPU and/or CPU in copper foil and grounding does basically nothing. I think it's a placebo. Using a 100uf cap between PPU pin 20 (ground) and 22, 1uf on CPU 40 to ground improves like 3% of jailbars. I tried 1uf like in the jpx72 site and noticed nothing.

It should be no surprise, but lifting pin 21 is what removes most jailbars. The problem with that russian board is that you have to send un-amplified video signal about 6" before it reaches the video/audio amp/power supply board. I used shielded (with shield tied to ground) wire.

I believe if you built a video amp like: https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/JbiAVMeR put almost directly on pin 21 would be the best solution, but the russian board works pretty damn good, there is also some dude on ebay that sells a similar kit with a trrs port, but he charges like $40 for it.

All in all the takeaway is, foil wrapping is a fucking joke, not worth desoldering the entire PPU, even for someone who has desoldered one a dozen times or so before. The real way to eliminate 95% of jail bars is lift pin 21. You can get rid of about 3% more with the capacitors. You won't eliminate them all short of nesrgb mod, but you can get them to a very good level that makes them hard to notice.

The only 'negative' is that the system will no longer reboot indefinitely, every time you put in a game it cannot read or play. No, cutting it won't hurt anything. Just a quick snip and done.

>Is it possible to connect the Famicom Disk System to the NES?
The good ole VHS deck? Nope, but you can play FDS games on it via flashcart.

>Is the connector on the bottom of the original NES used for anything?
It can be used to enable the FDS audio channel, which can be done by soldering a resistor over two of the pins internally or by buying an IO adapter that sports the necessary jumper.
