I mean the original is bland as fuck as the original Japanese script literal translations go, has fuckton of typos and still western references in characters' names and in credits. Characters' names in the re-translation are failthful: Katt, I mean no Japanese developer would call her by a western name, is Lin (Pu) which in the original Japanese script is Rinpoo, a transcription.

Katt is deservedly popular, because she's still remembered while being stuck in the one sole old-ass game which most of the current BoF fans haven't even played at its peak (they started with PS1 games), while Ninas were recycled every time and were kinda forced as the series' meme staple, although Ninas are generic party members in every game they are. Meanwhile Momo is stuck in the most bandwagoned BoF game which many of fans grew up with and still not popular enough. Katt clearly has the superior design.

Don't let the fact that Katt is portrayed carefree in most of her fanart distract you from the other fact she can do other expressions easily. Same with her combat abilities. Charm, taunt, magic, being a pole fighter, apparently can also wield pole-arms, all define a very interesting character. Her not being portrayed to her full capabilities in the 1994 game with limitations, doesn't mean it can't be done at all. She's still a lovable character in the game, especially in the re-translation.

I get she's supposed to be a glass cannon, but by the end of the game, the enemies start hitting like trucks and she's never going to last more than a few turns. I can use Bow, Rand, and even Bleu, who are all more durable and can deal just as good damage.

She's too fragile to be in the front row but doesn't have enough AP to be in the back row.
The best way to play her is to get that one guy in township that boosts AP permanently and then put her into her shaman form favoring speed. This will also give her enough AP to actually cast her spells, and you'd better have the rest of the party be fast too because you'll need to kill everything before it can knock her out of her super form.
Also Dare just sucks, most of the unique abilities suck.

Katt doesn't die in the front row if you know what you are doing and/or gave her best equipment. Saying she does is straight up lying. 3rd is the best position for her. Also most people don't even realize you can switch formations during battle. When on low HP - from scramble (1-2-Katt front, 4 back) to defense (1 front, 2-Katt-4 back) and vice versa when need attack power. Front - attack power, back - defensive power.

honestly just use a guide to make sure you get all the dragons (not actually that important, but generally helpful), then fire through the storyline as fast as possible without worrying too much about everything else if you want to find out if it has anything to offer you. 90% of the game is right in the meaty center of it on the main linear plot-line.

fair warning though if you end up caring about any of the characters at all this game WILL hurt you but still leave you with a shred of both hope and regret which is the cruelest gift of all

You turn into a dragon. In 2 it's just a summon. In 3 you can combine different properties to create unique dragons. In 5 turning into a dragon is a double-edged sword, but most powerful.

2 has shaman system, which is basically what 3 does but to regular characters who aren't MC.

4 has combo system. All party member simultaneously participate in combat (front row is active, back is substitute).

2 has more exploration than the others.
3 and 4 are more linear.
5 is the most linear. High replay-ability.

5 has fight initiation on the overworld but in 3D. You can use traps.

2 onward up to (including) 5 - all these BoF games are worth playing.
2 has the best story and characters
3/4 have the best classic gameplay
5 has the best unique gameplay mechanics
Re-translation is mandatory for 2.

My play order: 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5
1 is meh. All BoF games has god tier pixel work. Re-translation for 2 makes the game much more worthwhile.

BoF3 has an isometric view, but you can rotate the camera something like a maximum of 15 degrees. You need to stop moving, and rotate the camera slightly. After you're done, it shifts back to the regular view. IIRC the only purpose of this was to slightly hide chests behind corners and trees, so you had to stop and rotate your screen to check behind each one.
