TNT Evilution seems like the definitive Doom 2 wad.

>great new music
>harder
>bigger levels
>tons of enemies
>mazy and tough levels
>little gimmicks
>dat tech base aesthetic
>dat cave level aesthetic

I've played them all. This is by far my favorite classic Doom experience. Plutonia doesn't even hold a candle unless I am wanting a bunch of brown sprinkled with unbeatable surprise traps of enemies 10 times each map.

I hate TNT, the levels are just messy with unintuitive progression, hexen-tier switches that open something on the other half of the level and completely unmemorable design. The only thing I like it is the track "Metal".
>unbeatable surprise traps
>Plutonia
Seriously? Pretty much every megawad released after Plutonia is harder than it, it's like a walk in the park, you're saying you can't play any doom megawad after 1996 because they're too hard for you? Jesus. There's a reason that back in the pre-Skulltag days there were always a bunch of Plutonia servers on zdaemon packed with players but no TNT ones.

>code monkeys behind development; John Carmack coded fast 3D gameplay that's able to run on office computers; pays off
>good development tools made by developers; trade-off is even better tools made by community when game was open-sourced
>awesome developers with scope and respect; open-sourced their shit so the game lives on, while everything else died or is slowly fizzling out
>tons of custom made levels and still more being made
>was made to run on office computers of the mid 90's; nowadays it runs on anything that processes bits of data (SBCs, tablets, thermostats, calculators, whatever); awesome scalability
>not many gameplay mechanics to grasp; challenge and gameplay comes solely from level design and player's ability of ammo management/pathfinding/movement
>fast, arcade game levels of fast; always has been, never won't be
>deathmatch became popular by accident with Doom; now it's a standard in many games today
>singlehandedly caused a desire for people to upgrade their PCs to play it; now it pretty much plays on anything
>game console owners got love, too; huge ass list of ports to various game consoles of all ages, some with unique and cool features/content
>birthplace of level designers who'd take their shit to other well-known games; kickstarted their career
>has demo recording, a totally awesome feature that modern games seem to lack nowadays; save your gameplay and play it back anytime within the engine itself
>awesome music, MIDI, FM, or digitally arranged otherwise, with badass remixes and arrangements throughout the years
>shareware; first episode being installed on PCs was like people breathing oxygen; spread like wildfire
>rather non-toxic and awesome community which caters to all types of content from classic vanilla to anything but
>developers are retrospective about Doom; Romero still makes levels, Carmack still talks about it, rest of the dev team loves to reminisce

My list can go on but that's beyond the character limit.

I liked Evilution a lot too. I think it's better than Doom 2. But it's still got problems.

>surprise traps out the ass.

Seriously, it got the point early on that I knew that after every key or sphere there'd be some enemies waiting for me behind the wall.

>Hit-scan enemies far away

This was really annoying. I'd be playing a level and my life would be dwindling down and it would be because of some chaingunner on the other side of the map. This happened too many times.

But I did enjoy the overall level design of most of the maps, the new music, textures, and intermission screen, and improved engine all made it a worthwhile experience.

>demo recording, a totally awesome feature that modern games seem to lack nowadays
I imagine a lot of that is due to physics simulations not being exact. You'd have to save the location and rotation of everything every couple of tics instead of just repeating the inputs and having everything fall into place.

To be fair, many other communities have it much worse. If you ask for help making a map, doesn't matter if it's a specific question or something "laughably" simple, people will still help instead of laughing you off as a newbie. Sure it still may happen, but not as much as it does elsewhere. You can make an amateur shit level and still be proud of it no matter how good your skills are, not Terrywad levels of shit but a level that lacks polish compared to the pre-shipped levels for example can still be somewhat appreciated.

Whatever i'll upload this piece of shit. 2nd map I've ever made, let alone finished, in my life.

Name: Nothing Amaze-ing
Compatible with: Boom
Music: MAP06 Doom II

Things i learned:

>never ever do mazes with sectors
>don't ever do mazes under 100 minutes either you'll shave your backhairs
>can't be assed to ever detail any of my maps, major props to anyone who takes the time to bother with it
>i like resource-intensive maps, ammo saving, low health
>my map scale got blown to shit after i sketched it out on paper
>i will never get used to doom's map scaling

i had thoughts about scrapping this shit but it's some shit idea i started and wanted to finish it. most of my time was spent playtesting it and it's doable, just might take a few tries. had it sketched out on a shitty drawing and just tried to transfer it to doom builder as fast as i could, ended up scrapping a ton of shit.

You would have to make a patch or something that defines the blood colors of the flemoids as green, and I don't know how difficult or easy that may be. No-no, on point of sticking with vanilla Doom1 in particular, Romero does everything right. He is the king of the hill there, and he can safely ignore everything that happened over at Doom2 userlevel scene as he should. Doom1 had a single year of active modding for it anyway (before getting superseded with Doom2), and after that, maps for Doom1 were mostly vanilla throwbacks.
From that standpoint his decision makes perfect sense.

in all honesty, something I did like about them was how hardy fighting regular enemies could become, in stark contrast to the single-shotgun-pop-and-done mechanic from the original games. fighting pinkies in close quarters was suddenly a war of attrition, imps would spring at you and slash you while former humans got some pretty clear shots on you. if anything I take them as testament that combat in Doom 4 can be more than just arenas and open ended combat spaces, they just need to exert their map design muscle some more, because the mechanics are there. they just need to hone up player speed and friction, and maybe change some gun stats and nerf some monsters.

It depends. Linear can work so long as the enemies, combat and overall design don't feel boring and repetitive. A lot of classic Doom maps, even official ones, are fairly linear, and people complain about those less than the more wide-open ones of Doom 2.

If it's literally just straight hallways and basic (or spongy) encounters with no real thought put into them, then it's gonna be shit.

Lol, I'm just joking Tom.
Hall's maps from doom are actually my favourite because they're so off-the-wall in their design.

They have that unique property of being basically as big as he could make a level back then without it slowing the computer to a crawl and it has that pseudo "it's an actual place" feeling to them. But I will recognize he had to be reined in by the other guys and it was also probably one of the best design decisions to ignore his idea of having the levels be real places.

I've played Brutal probably more than any other gameplay mod, next one behind it is Samsara.
BD deserves a good long analysis as to why it's so successful but the biggest thing with it is feedback, everything generates different feedback. Eg: every gun can shoot off a different part and every weapon kills in a different way and shit is always going on.

As somebody with ADHD brutal is like crack to an addict. However I also have an IQ above 85 (maybe not a lot, but enough) and so can see that Doom is best enjoyed with different things and sometimes vanilla, gotta give the receptors a rest you know.

Really though I think what every single i-only-play-brutal-doom person has in common is they started with it, they didn't play Doom back in the 90's they played it with brutal and that's that. It *is* their vanilla and everything is seen through that lens.

My opinions for saving things are pretty....extreme. Humanity could easily survive it but our current world order is more interested in being neoliberal bullshit that wants to turn the first world into some kind of giant Brazil to satisfy the lust of global capitalism, destroying everything that doesn't serve mindless consumer bullshit.
Even things which should be serious moments for humanity to wonder about like the next Mars mission instead gets given political bullshit on it, eg: "a durrr why aren't there any people i like politically? the people i don't like are the only ones here! why isn't this all about my stupid bullshit?! this mission is bigoted a durrr"

I actually hope AI takes off and we can make a sentient AI one that will be able to work and do shit on it's own, I don't even care if it wipes humanity out because our legacy is preserved in it anyway and I'd rather that than humanity debase itself like it is now. It's like dying when you're 50 at the peak of your life and career rather than living to 100 and dying confused and frail. I hope for sentient AI for artistic reasons, I just want them to feel like we feel and not just be a calculator.
Look up something called the great filter, also the Firmi paradox. The skinny is "maybe we don't see aliens is because they always wipe themselves out somehow".
If you want space related stuff look up a guy on youtube called Isaac Arthur, I recommend him because he's a presenter that actually knows what he is talking about rather than being some gen X idiot who only knows how to smoke cones and read scripts.

Either evacuate Earth to colonies in artificial habitats in the outer solar system or starlifting, where you rip material from a star to slowly lower its mass. As a bonus you get a fuck ton of material from this, so more possible artificial habitats, maybe enough to build a dyson swarm if we felt like it/needed to.

Both involve technology we're nowhere near having but we know they're possible and this will be a very long way off, so there'll probably be better ways if we're still around.

I recall one of the levels in Plutonia 2 did this, in Deathmatch you'd spawn in a section removed from the rest of the level, which was recycled from the first draft of the map.

And true, nothing would stop you from doing this with the original .exe. In fact, you could totally build a level for coop, where for each player there is their one path, which intersect sort of at places, but they can never go into each other's paths, and they have to do certain things to let each other progress.
You could also make a level featuring a large courtyard, which in singleplayer is really just a decorative vista you can't reach, but in Deathmatch is your dedicated arena.

Of course things like these weren't done back then because of size limits and visplane limits (though, visplanes you can't see don't particularly matter.

Astroguy here.
I'm glad somebody else sees it. People who are like "we'll mine asteroids!" and meanwhile other scientists are lmaoing hard at them because you can mine the fucking sun, the sun contains more of every element than all the other planets in our solar system combined. It's not even a competition, it's like pitting HeMan against a quadrupole amputee in a strongman competition.

In the future, whatever colony is on the sun would be the hub of the economy. But I'd just love a future where we can all be in independent, different floating habitats floating around the sun, you can have the community that you want, like a confederation of equals rather than some central body that wants to control the entire species like we have now.

PS: I'd be happy to live on/around other terraformed planets in the future, the skies of Venus would be pretty comfy as you could actually survive outside in it's upper atmosphere with basic materials. Think "cloud city".

Also, the atmosphere of Titan (I might be fucking this up, tired) is so thick and the gravity so light that if we were astronaughting it up there, we could make a simple wingsuit and be able to fly around like birds. Retarded birds, but birds.
Yeah, physics baby.

As The Asshole, you get to pick certain places to just teleport in, you get all the keys you want, and whatever weapon you want, even The Ring (HD's take on the blursphere).
If you wanted to just be A Fucking Cunt, what you could do is to just pick up the BFG, and instead of heading out into the level, you could just sit in your ready room and charge cells to let loose Frag into the atmosphere.

Dark Souls style invasions for Hideous Destructor. Supports up to 6 players in a 4v2+PVE scenario.

>>5211328
It uses co-op with teamdamage as the basis rather than deathmatch, for consistent spawn points. Player 1 has a blue skull key in their spawn room, which is needed to unblock the exit. Their spawn room's teleporter only works once, so if they're killed then the game is over. Player 2 is the first invader, who gets all three skull keys and can spawn from three different locations in the map so they can approach the co-op group how they like. The orb flips the PROP_NOTARGET flag on the invader, so that they're ignored by enemies. Friendly fire is still something to watch out for, but they won't target you intentionally. Players 3, 4, and 5 are co-opers who get less survival supplies than player 1, but can respawn infinitely. I haven't done it yet but I'll be adding switches at the start of the actual map so that player 1 has to summon them manually. Player 6 is a second invader who gets all the same things as the first one. The orb respawns every five minutes, nothing technically stops you from going through the teleporter without it but you'll be targeted by enemies if you do. For how quickly I managed to whip this up, it turned out fun as fuck.

Am I alone in thinking Dusk looks like some amateur mod from the late 90's when it comes to the graphics and level design? There is nothing about it that screams "purchase" in any professional way to me. This seems like the kind of cute project some teenager would have done in his spare time after school and felt really good about himself for accomplishing something while the others were out drinking and smoking, yet still it is of no value to anyone.

I should know, since I was that teenager.

Ports with Linux support are likely to work (or easy to port if you speak C).

Try PrBoom+ (check ports tree for prboom-plus, FreeBSD seems to have it). If you want more features go for GZDoom instead, but PrBoom+ has enough for me. Also the consensus seems to be that PrBoom+ performs better than GZDoom.

Honorable mentions to Crispy Doom and Chocolate Doom if you want even less features.

Do you know fucking anything at all about that history?
Carmack would be probably the key person to blame for Romero leaving (but he was planning on leaving anyway, he was strongly dissatisfied with the direction Quake took, even if he readily accepted it was an objectively good game). Carmack left iD Software years ago, further, Carmack and Romero made up MANY years before Carmack sold his stake in iD and left.

Romero is doing Sigil just as a fun thing (and probably to raise some capital for a project), I don't think there's any feelings of spite from the man, as childish as he sometimes can be.

i love this topic. astronomy is so fun, so humbling, when you realize the epic scale of everything around us. the human race is just a bunch of galactic tardigrades, hardy and tough as hell to snuff out, but stupid, disorganized, and infinitesimal compared to what's out there.

seeing AI evolve so rapidly is frightening but incredibly inspiring. i'm always searching for stories in which AI and technology usurps humanity shown through a benevolent rather than a malevolent light.

i feel that we as a species are too crippled by our own hubris and sins that it's not enough that our few virtues can lift us up and beyond our current existence. development of technology and a truly objective and organized AI is the only hope for humanity moving past its limitations and into something greater.

that's why i think studying eusocial animals like ants is critical to greater organizing humanity. if humans had the same willingness and absence of ego to form such a cohesive civilization as ants do, we would have achieved such great technological feats by now.

Romero didn't WANT to make Quake 1 the game it became (also don't ever call it steampunk again or I'll telefrag you), he had grand ideas for an open world story driven RPG in a medieval fantasy setting.

It became a shooter as a giant compromise, one which he resented strongly while working on it.

the point im getting at with quake 2 and 3 was their movement mechanics were still off somewhat. Quake 3 had rocket jumping and all, but it still could have been a little better. Doom 3 was a phenomenal game as a whole, but the movement and gunplay could have been a lot better and smoother. rtcw was a great game but again, could have had slightly more refined movement and gunplay to matcvh the stealthy mechanics. WTNO could have just had better level design. Rage certainly could have had more levels with good level design and better movement to make them as fun as the ghouly fuckers looked running around.

>The luminosity of the Sun will steadily increase, resulting in a rise in the solar radiation reaching the Earth. This will result in a higher rate of weathering of silicate minerals, which will cause a decrease in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In about 600 million years from now, the level of carbon dioxide will fall below the level needed to sustain C3 carbon fixation photosynthesis used by trees. Some plants use the C4 carbon fixation method, allowing them to persist at carbon dioxide concentrations as low as 10 parts per million. However, the long-term trend is for plant life to die off altogether. The extinction of plants will be the demise of almost all animal life, since plants are the base of the food chain on Earth.

I feel Final Doom has a better level design for the most part compared to Doom 2. But Final Doom bad maps are worse than Doom 2 maps.
Yes,I think the first 10 maps in Doom 2 are fun and are the best part of the megawad, same for some in the late part. The rest is eeeh.

Doom 3 has a lot of positives but it's way too high in the list. The gunplay is not that good, some enemies spawns feel random,it becomes a chore for a while and sometimes it's really way too dark.
Overall it's a very good game but there are other ones that did a better job with the atmosphere. And it falls flat in comparison.

He makes a good point with Doom 64 but with EX and Retribution, you can play the game at its absolute best.Personally it's criminally underrated and I think it did a better job than Doom 3 with its atmosphere. And on top of that,it has a cool soundtrack. The hell levels are horrifying,in a good way.

Doom 4 has an amazing gameplay and soundtrack but it really begs for more in terms of level design. If it had something more similiar to the classic games it would've been much better. The boss fights are mediocre but it's a common problem in FPS games.

Let me tell you, some games on the N64 got it right, complete with rebindable buttons (D64 had that), many got it bad. Stop Skeletons From Fighting (formerly Happy Video Game Nerd) tuned his controls to be more like Goldeneye when he played D64 for his review.

The bigger problem with the N64 version is that the game is so dark, if you play it on a CRT at the "intended" setup it's so goddamn dark that it's actually kind of a hindered experience.

A gaming mag that I used to religiously buy had a copy of Doom 95 Shareware on its demo disc to celebrate reveal of Doom 3 (the mag has gotten some exclusive hands-on preview or something.) I was like 10 at the time. I've beaten it 100%, but didn't seek out the full game until much later in life.

Ironically the reason I did was because I became obsessed with comics, specifically Batman, and the fact that someone turned Knightfall storyline into a first-person shooter piqued my curiosity. So I downloaded Batman Doom and pirated Doom 2, the Dos version. That was the beginning of it, but I wouldn't start playing Doom on the regular until semi-recently because... I stumbled on these threads when I was looking for stuff on retro games (I like retro games in general), and like a year ago decided to actually try it out for serious. I bought legal wads on GOG, downloaded GZDoom, ZDL loader, and my first mod was, ironically, Project Brutality (I was not impressed by how CoD it was, lol). That was about year ago. Now I'm in the process of making my first Doom map.

So I guess I owe all of this to you guys! Thanks!

>(to be fair, Doom wasn't my first retro FPS, my first computer came preinstalled with a pirated copy of Douk Atomic Edition, which I played the shit out of, because gameplay was great and atmosphere was killer - until my mom forced me to uninstall it because it was 'inappropriate for children' - I was like 8yo at the time)

I love Doom with all my heart.
I never contributed with anything since I don't know how to create music, maps and more. But I enjoyed all the mods people had created over the years.
There are no words to describe my love for Doom. And the fact that ID Soft was able to create such a fantastic game in 2016 makes me feel as the luckiest man in the whole word.
Thank you Bethesda for giving ID Soft the money and support they needed to continue. And thanks to ID Soft for creating one of the best videogames ever.
I know that the people from ID that created the original Doom, Wolf and Quake are no more in the company. But holy shit! The new ID games (and Machinegames games) are so faithful to the original spirit of those games that it feels like the original ID Soft is still there, the only thing that changed is the group of people working in those franchises.

Again, thank you very much. You are the reason why I love videogames so fucking much!

These are some pretty advanced trips.

I'm not sure if this is how I heard about it, but my earliest memory of Doom as on Xbox Live arcade, probably in 2008 or 2007. Maybe this was my first contact with the game? Not sure. Don't remember exactly. I thought the screenshots looked dope, so I downloaded the demo to my Xbox 360 and got absolutely hooked. I liked the music, aesthetic, and speed of the game. Didn't take long to buy the full thing. Eventually, I learned about ZDoom and made the switch. Those were the days when e1m7, e2m4 and levels like them would actually spook me quiet a bit.

I can't find the screenshot, but on the arcade they had a screenshot of the shotgun being fired on e1m6 (I think) early in the level. I thought it was a laser rifle before I played the game. Don't know why, but that memory has stuck with me, kek. If anyone finds that screenshot, that'd be cool.

>he new ID games (and Machinegames games) are so faithful to the original spirit of those games that it feels like the original ID Soft is still there

Ehhh I can't say the new games are very faithful to the feel of the original games. Nu-Doom can't really be threatening anymore. Nu-Doom is more what doom has become in the cultural consciousness rather than what Doom ever *was*. It's a Far Cry 3 style sequel to Doom 3, taking the opposite approach of the previous game to please the fans who felt burned by the last game. }
It's not a bad game, it's just not what I feel like Doom is.
Doom's never been a power fantasy to me, at least in the conventional way. It's been about beating overwhelming odds, navigating a difficult and treacherous environment around, past or through enemies who feel like real obstacles as you slowly accumulate a growing arsenal of really cool guns.
It's not about upgrades, it's not about how cool you are, it's about surviving, a normal, albeit incredibly angry guy in a very bad spot, using the right weapons at the right times and rationing your supplies to win.

Doom 2016 isn't a game about that. It's a game about tearing your way through hordes of enemies who are never an obstacle, and many of which will actively run from you rather than try to stop you. They're just points or a key to open a door. It feels fantastic, but that's not what I come to Doom for. I don't want to be Master Chief, I want to be John Mcclain.
I don't want to be Neo from Matrix Reloaded, I want to be Snake Plisken.
Ellen Ripley not The Predator.

It's good, I won't deny that. The lore is absolutely pointless, but it's good. It's just not what I look for.

That would be an awesome idea for a set of co-op maps. Parts where you are separated due to single use teleporters, spawns, etc, then you have to both survive and help each other out from different areas (you might be able to see over a ravine to shoot at enemies the other guy has to fight, or you might need to hit switches to help another guy out, etc).

Doom 4 partakes on the audience's general perception of what Doom is because the fanbase made it happen. most people have long since grown accustomed to Doom's simplicity and want something different, and when you're mercilessly blowing both barrels up a guy's face for 20+ years worth of time, sooner or later your line of thinking will drift away from what it was on your first romps through the game, to give way to the more immediate feeling of being a guy that just kills demons for self handshakes. less 'oh my god I'm so scared of that mancubus aaaahh' and more 'I strafe right, then left, then a bit to the right again, pop six on his ass and he's done for'. and a fair share of what you consider to be core to the games (not to say all of them) is still present in the new games to some extent, you're still in a precarios situation you need to crawl back out from, killing everything in your way, being cool, trying not to die. that's about all I ask for, really.

but at the same time, I can appreciate Classic Doom for being more streamlined and immediate with its approach, sometimes you want a bit more thought put in when you fight a group of enemies beyond just moving around and ripping body parts MK style.

either's fine with me, they're both Doom games at heart, they feel good to play. so long as it's not 3 I won't complain.

>sometimes you want a bit more thought put in when you fight a group of enemies beyond just moving around and ripping body parts MK style.

This is pretty much my entire argument. Some of the best Doom maps aren't just an enviroment you run and shoot through, they're a bloody puzzle to be solved by using the right guns at the right times. Running through Doom 2 in full on Ultra Violence with chocolate doom, only allowing myself 2 saves per level, once at the start of the level and one midway through the level, the first time I played through Doom 2. Doom 2 has a lot of maps that are like this, and so does Doom. It doesn't feel like whatever modern games think shooting is, it's a little more thoughtful.
Even Wolfenstein 3D is a lot closer to something like Call of Duty in that regard.

Quake was somewhat the same way but I felt like it focused more solely on movement and was choked by tighter areas.

There's something to be said about correct usage of bullet spongey enemies in shooter design. It's real easy to make a ton of enemies who go down in under 20 bullets, but how many games make bringing down big chunky feel satisfying without adding RPG elements, making them bosses, or throwing a health bar on the screen?

>so long as it's not 3

I'm still on the opposite end in that regard actually.
I don't hate 3. Fucked up as it is I kind of see it as more of a doom game on Carmack's side of tech and environmental design. Is it flawless by any means? Fuck no, but those opening hours are still great aside from the imps, and it does have good ideas in its head.
It's a push in the opposite direction toward tech, survival horror, and a focus on atmosphere, and I won't say that push was even remotely a good idea given how much it hampered gameplay.

Granted, enemies are still obstacles, it's still in some ways about everything I said, and I have serious nostalgia for Doom 3. Is it great? Probably not. Is it still worthy of the doom name? I'd argue Somewhat.

>they were probably afraid of mimicking Hexen
No, they moved away from Romero's ambitious concept because while he was supposed to lead the project and make it a reality, he was regularly absent from work and very little got done over a long period of time.

He wanted a fantasy RPG, and they were all onboard for it, but he didn't actually put in the necessary effort to make it happen, instead courting press and DM'ing with fans, slacking for months. He was very vain and full of hubris in this time of his life.
The deadline reached closer, and in spite of lots of textures, models and maps having been put together, very little of actual substance had been worked out, so a roughly a half dozen months before deadline, Carmack held a meeting and they discussed the future of the game they were doing, because it wasn't going very well.
It was suggested to just take what they have now and retool it all as a shooter sort of like Doom, just to finish the game, the idea being they would then try something more new and ambitious again afterwards. Everyone was on board with this change of direction, except for Romero, of course.

Romero absolutely fucking hated this, and this was when he decided he would leave after the game was done (Carmack would also have been wanting to get rid off him by now too).
The entirety of the first Quake was a huge compromise to reach a deadline, but in spite of this, it comes out as a rock solid game, and Romero wouldn't deny this at any point, because Quake is a good game, but it wasn't at all what he wanted to do. That's why Dai-Katana was so insanely ambitious, he wanted to break out of that mold and do something new and different.

Oh boiiiiiiiiiii was it a shitty documentary. It started promising, the Santa Monica and Requiem part was interesting, as well as the Pitchford's part that explored how Valve started as publishers from the inside. But then
>the long part about Condition Zero, of all things
Valve didn't know what they wanted and thus the studios working on the project just tried to do their own thing hoping that something will please them. Nothing did, so at some point Turtle Rock was hired to just slap the leftovers into something resembling a product. Which they did, and it was comparable to the result of Soldier of Fortune getting impregnated by Delta Force. End of story. Why is it even there and who the fuck cares? I don't remember anybody caring even back when it was released.
>mods
>no actual modder of HL1 in the documentary
Why? Are they that hard to contact? That Black Mesa Source guy explaining how GoldSrc scripts worked part was good (but they really should have him go deeper). Him explaining why they just NEEDED to redesign the hall after the tram ride because it symbolises what Half Lif is in 201blahblahblghstgfrj~ BITCH WHO FUCKING CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARES?! They wanted Half-Life with modern graphics. That's what they made. That was the point of all thing and it is obvious, thus, doesn't belong in in-depth documentary.

>literally who indieshit writer explains how Laidlow's genderswapped ep3 fanfic inspired her to host the HL-themed game jam where some hipsters tried to outmeme each other with Garry's mod bullshit and newgrounds-tier animation
She literally talks about the deeper meaning of the epileptic flash animation where a giant worm with Breen's head dances to some HL music remix while spewing random Breen quotes. What does this shit has to do with Half Life?
>finally, the team behind Project Borealis talking about how they are making HL2EP3 and NOT HL3 (it's important!), how they decided to keep pistol model on the screen in one hand instead of two (it's important!) and how they designed the furry blue arctic headcrab (it's important!)
Yeah, because we all know how projects like that usually end. Hunt down the Freeman, anyone? This shit was officially greenlit by Valve themselves.
Oh, and after structured first half that ends with Condition Zero the narrative just jumps between talking about HL2 (nothing said about the change of setting and the plot but we see more Randy praising the gravity gun), mods (saying essentially nothing but "They were there and were huge" with little to no detail), episodes and Doritopope philosophyzing about what HL3 can be in our day and age.
tl;dr - the first half of the documentary was good, the second went downhill and ended nowhere. Just like the HL franchise itself.

I recall seeing commercials for the Doom movie on TV back when it was coming out, and there was also a show mainly focused on video games that I loved to watch back then that reviewed the Xbox version of Doom 3, so this would've been in 2005, when I was 9.

Two years later, I started browsing YouTube and came across these videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkMSVtG4whs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w6FxkYU9qM (This one REALLY had me interested since I loved GoldenEye as a kid)

The AVGN's review of the Sega 32x had also come out around that time, and it was pretty interesting to see him compare the SNES and 32x ports.

I ended up really wanting to play the PC version of the game but didn't get my hands on it until the following year. Not long after, I discovered ZDoom.

Then in 2009, I finally installed Skulltag, and I'd honestly have to say that it was at this point that I truly got into Doom, since I ended up getting introduced to a shit ton of WADs through it and since my PC at the time was dogshit.

Two questions concerning MarkV-WinQuake.

1) Any way to make textures with alphas display properly? You know, like the cobwebs or vines? Parts that are meant to be seen through are displayed as solid white instead.

2) Even after fixing r_wateralpha, some part of the level end up having fake (dithered) transparency. Like some torches, runes on the sword in Grendel's Blade, little random things like that. Not sure if ALL of them are fire-related. This issue doesn't seem to care for changing r_lavaalpha (or however it's properly called) though. Any way to fix it?

Don't engage, they're past facts, they only want to pontificate so you engineer the problem out and isolate them.

It definitely is the low end of low poly. Look on the bright side. It sets a low bar. Now that pixel art is running it's course as a fad for lazy people to crutch on low poly modelling and texturing can be next. Not that flat shaded garbage either. Proper texturing and effort.

>Look on the bright side. It sets a low bar.
The bar it sets is lower than the game it tries to imitate from 22 fucking years ago, because they don't actually understand what made older games look the way they are, they just faked it with abhorrent models, trash textures, and still plastered 1000 tons of colored lighting and anti-aliased particle effects on top.

You know, the thing that I REALLY loved about low-poly art in old games it that it WAS pixel-art. It wasn't this random brown puke like in Minecraft, each texture was, straight up, work of pixel art put in a 3D environment. In fact, some of the best pixel art in industry we can find on textures in the 90s.

Considering that with games like Iconoclasts, Shovel Knight and Owlboy we're finally getting games with good pixel art, I hope that soon, actual artists will start taking stabs at low-poly games and create something that can truly stand up graphically to Quake or Metal Gear Solid.

The creators are rarely more skilled than players themselves. Players have the power of youth and can play the finished product for ages whereas devs have to be doing something else in the meantime. Most of their experience comes from dev builds or hell, they just leave it to playtesters.

Where does it even say that? All I see is
>Action Doom is chock-full of cool moments, and while the opening plane-jump sequence immediately stands out, the sheer concentration of coolness in MAP02 gives it the edge. From the opening forest crawl to the impressive car/boat chase sequence (depending on which route you took), this one stays in the brain for a long while -- even if only because you crashed your boat into the rocks for the seventeenth time.
