Well, in Zelda 2 lore, it explains that every princess in the royal bloodline is named Zelda due to the events of the back story to that game. However it would seem that ALttP occurs prior to the backstory of Zelda 2.

If you notice, Link is referred to as "The hero" or "the legendary hero" in ALttP, and you can name your character to what you like and have the NPCs refer to you as that, so he's not actually called Link in the in-game text.

The Japanese subtitle is, Kamigami no Triforce. Which literally means "Triforce of the Gods". Nintendo of America hates religion so they had to get rid of the "God" part. They also probably thought that autistic Americans would want to know where the game fit into the timeline, so they put the word "past" in there to signify that it's a prequel.

Consider the the themes expressed in Zelda games in particular.

Link's Awakening is a Buddhist existentialist metaphor which Breath Of The Wild recently called back to in a huge (if subtle enough that you wouldn't notice if you haven't played LA) way.
Ocarina of Time built on the dual world idea but made the other world the future. Central to the game is the time skip where Link moves from the more idyllic world of his childhood to a darker world in his adulthood, where he has some legitimate motherfuckers to slay.

That time jump is instantaneous and reversible in the game, but IRL every "child Link" was going to go through the same transition between worlds, just at the regular speed of... time.
He's the Hero of Time, right? Those same kinds of themes about perception, birth, deception, and time consistently appear throughout the series. BotW, aside from being littered with the debris of the "past", is even full of sokushinbutsu and the prominent mystery of satori, almost like they're getting impatient with us not figuring this shit out yet.

Anyway my point is that the "link to the past" is the game itself and the foundation it built for all this. They made the game knowing that one day a generation of adult Links they were trying to engineer would look back on it as something that was part of their beginning.

This would probably all sound a lot less gay in Japanese.
