Lately i've found out that Yoiko (Hamaguchi and Arino) partecipated on some interesting shit, most of all that one show where they were in a deserted place and needed to survive. I wish i could watch that subbed, somewhere.

>watch Arino play Comix Zone
>aw yeah, I should play that again, why did I never finish it?
>start playing, get to the first boss
>hit him until he goes high, go under to the right, get the barrel, push it under him
>suddenly it glitches me ontop of the barrel, and pushes both me and the barrel to the left
>health goes from nearly full to empty instantly
Everytime I play Comix Zone this always happens, then I remember why I stopped playing. Not this exact instance, but something always glitches or gets funky or doesn't work the way it's supposed to. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the glitch Arino encountered wasn't caused by the age of the hardware. Don't even get me started on the hit detection issues in this game.

They'll probably get a good laugh out of your suggestion. There's no point in showing it because Tamage is for showing places that people might not know about. Everybody in Japan that's interested in retro games already knows about Super Potato. They're all over the place, I've been to a couple in Tokyo (Akihabara and Ikebukuro, there are probably more) and Osaka (near Namba).
They've usually got a good selection but they're slightly more expensive than their competitors. Retro Game Camp (also in Akihabara) was selling their Saturns for 1000¥ less than Super Potato last time I was there.

Sort of. They use "cartoon" when they want to refer to foreign cartoons specifically, while "anime" is the standard word than can mean cartoons from any country. It's similar to how the west uses "anime" to mean "cartoons from Japan" and "cartoon" as a generic word that doesn't imply country of origin, just the other way around.

>> No.5202256

>>5202249
Also, "cartoon" is generally used to mean modern foreign stuff like the Simpsons, South Park, Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network stuff etc. Nobody really thinks of Disney or vintage shorts like Tom & Jerry when they say "cartoon".

"Comic" is pretty interchangable with manga, though. Lots of manga anthologies have the word "comics" in their name.

"Anime" is actually an English loanword (which most people forget). It's short for "Animation". Since it's a Japanese term, it became to refer to just Japanese animation by outsiders, but it's really not, it just means all animation. Frozen is "anime" for example.

Manga is a native Japanese term, and it just means "comics". The Japanese would say that Superman and Batman are "manga". And "Comic" is a common word in the titles for Japanese "manga" series.

It's a bit more complex than that. The term "cartoon" IS used in Japanese, and generally refers to modern foreign (mostly American) cartoons that don't have a massive mainstream appeal over there. So while Frozen would indeed be "anime", most Japanese would refer to The Simpsons as a "cartoon" instead of "anime".

IIRC, someone sent in some lyrics that were something along the lines of "Chief Arino's wife is beautiful, it's a shame their kids look more like him." He responded with "shut up", and that was the very last "Sing whatever the hell you want" segment they did. It's episode 74 First Samurai if you wanna see it for yourself. Uh my god. Do you guys really watch this? The older seasons are pretty much unwatchable for me due to the poor quality of the rips. Everything is .mp4, or .avi, low resolution, hard subs, etc. I started with the newest eps, liked them, and then wanted to go back earlier.

Who in their right minds thought .avi hardsubs was a good idea? I guarntee you they weren't anime fans, as they tend to be way more particular about this sort of thing.

Localization mentality fansubs are the fucking worst. They sub things as if they're writing a dub script that kids are going to be watching on Nick. I think generally you can assume that anyone who is already informed or savvy enough to know about these shows and track down subs online, cultural differences and japanese terms/concepts aren't going to confuse them. If someone watching isn't familiar with something, they can literally type the fucking word into the same browser they used to watch or download the episode and find out in a few seconds.

This is why ironically TV-Nihon has come out on top in terms of sub quality. All of their competitors formed over the past decade as a counter to TV-N's old undertranslation habits. Yet now they're compensating way too far in the opposite direction, to the point of changing character/vehicle/attack etc names that contain Japanese (Aesir's Ornac and Warring shit, Over-Time's infamous GoBusterO/King fuck up, etc), purposely incorrectly translating things (Over-Time's Build), and even trying to translate sound effects (the Kamen Rider Ex-Aid subs by anyone other than TV-N were impossible to watch because of that), while TV-N has generally settled into a much better place with complete, accurate translations and no cringey localizations.

If TV-N could figure out that overbearing font colors, effects, and graphics are fucking awful and stop using them, they'd actually be the best place to get toku subs.

tl;dr we all know what a Famicom and Mega Drive are, we all know Donkey Kong Country was called Super Donkey Kong in Japan, stop being fucking retards, just stop

People who act elitist over fansubs and "localisation" are the worst.

The entire point of subtitles is to make the work accessible to a new audience. Assuming that anyone interested in watching a man play old video games is going to be versed in obscure terms and often completely different game titles is just absurd.

The one I always fall back to is "Commando". Everyone in the west who knows of it, knows of it as Commando. For the people who don't, searching Commando is going to get them the most relevant results. Senjō no Ōkami is just gibberish to 99% of the audience for this show, and it's things like this that make the most sense.

Of course, you can split hairs over things like Mega Drive vs Genesis, but if you know one you alsmost certainly know the other. Given the target audience of Americans, the number of viewers who know Genesis but not MD is going to be higher than the number of viewers who know MD but not Genesis.

If maintaining the "original" meaning is so important to you, then you should learn Japanese. I don't watch tokushit because I'm not 5, but it's pretty sad that you're watching shows filled with terms that Japanese 5 year olds can understand, while you're just treating them as cool sounding gibberish because your "translation" group of choice can't actually be bothered doing their job. "Famicom" and "Mega Drive" (which is what they also called it in Europe), and PC-Engine are not obscure terms. Hell, most people just use "PC-Engine" in retro gaming forums since the Turbogrphx-16 bombed so hard it's easy to ignore.

How many people are going to be downloading a torrent for a Japanese show from nyaa are going to not know this shit? Firs,t they have to have an interest in Japanese media, retro gaming. That's already pretty niche.

Subtitles are not your fucking reference material, faggot. They're an entertainment product.

If you want to make in-depth TL notes for every fucking idiom in the show you didn't even notice, go ahead. Just don't expect anyone else to want to pause every 2 seconds to have a joke explained to them.

Lots of EOPs seem to have mistaken low-effort literal translation as some kind of "learning Japanese 101" course, which is great for lazy translators, because it means they can avoid doing work and be praised by idiots like yourself who think that if they just consume 500,000 hours of poorly written subtitles, they'll eventually achieve Japanese fluency.

You can't assume every person will start the show at episode one, so any time a famicom shows up, you'll need to have a TL note explaining that this magical little box is what the NES looked like in Japan if you're committed to teaching people instead of just creating an enjoyable watching experience.

The guys over at SA decided it was better to just translate everything instead of the hassle of judging on a case-by-case basis which terms were well known enough by their audience to leave untranslated. Which again, isn't easy, and different people have very different interpretations of what is "acceptable" to leave untranslated. While I'm sure you want NES left as Famicom, would you want Chief left as Kacho? Plenty of braindead weebs would. Should Resident Evil be left as Biohazard?

>> No.5255494

They didn't translate, they localized. A famicom is shown. The narrator says "Famicom". The subtitles say "NES". It's dumb.

But why? Do westerners need to know that Commando was called Senjo no Okami in Japan for any reason? It's meaningless trivia that adds nothing to the show, all because you're upset that you hear them saying "biohazard" while the subtitles say "resident evil". >>That's a good compromise
No, it's a fucking retarded one. Leaving it in Japanese or "translating" it to the English equivalent is the same thing, it turns what should be just the name of a fucking game into a trivia topic that nobody needs to know.

I'm sure everyone here knows RE is called Biohazard in Japan, but there's a really pathetic strain of elitism in EOP weebs where not knowing that or not caring about that is somehow bad.

What's particularly sad is how few of you manage to extrapolate out your line of thinking. If these shows should be aimed at the audience who knows the most pointless trivia, then surely you'd be against subtitling all together. After all, what could give you more bragging rights than just learning Japanese, and then you could wag your big dick all over the place, and you wouldn't have to bitch and moan about subtitlers pandering to the biggest audience possible.

If you're watching GCCX, you should know Japanese. That's really what you're saying, although you don't really understand it because you're at some delusional point where you think you can have your cake and eat it, that you can demand everyone learn the same shit as you to watch a show, but that you don't have to actually learn anything new yourself because the show should be subtitled in line with your personal expectations and comfort level.

It's a variety show starring a comedian who trys to beat retro games. That's really all there is to it. If you're mostly into games you can learn a shitload about games you aren't familiar with through the main challenges and side segments. That's one of the best aspects of the show. I would suggest looking at an episode list and picking one with a game you don't know and are curious about. Watching Arino play something you know well isn't as fun. I'm filing an official complaint about the SA's teams translation efforts. Please pass them on, as I don't post on A.

>Dear sir or madam,

>SA's team has translated the cult hit Japanese show Game Center CX into English for many years. I love the approach the team takes to localize terms and phrases so that they may be more understandable to audiences in a Western setting who are unfamiliar with Japanese terminology. However, there is an area that has been completely neglected. The show has been called "Retro Game master" in the American DVD series, Kotaku, and the NDS video game. Arino even aired an English ad for "Retro Game Master". Thus, I fear that fans of Retro Game Master are left confused and puzzled by this "Game Center CX". Many likely don't even know more episodes of the series exist! For that reason, I humbly request that SA Team properly localize the show as "Retro Game Master", in both in-show text and file names. I also request that they take the next step and digitally alter all instances of "GC:CX" or "Game Center:CX" in the graphics to properly use the Retro Game Master English terminology.

>Thank you,
>- Long time fan of Retro Game Master

>that's just how the subbing community is when it comes to live action stuff for some reason.
I think it's because it breeds the worst kind of fan from all factions.
It's less popular than anime, so it brings in the self-important "I'm more Japan-savvy than you" passive consumer.
Stuff like GCCX is easier to understand compared to most TV, so it attracts the "fluent-but-not-quite" kind of Japanese speaker, the ones still stuck in the "I KNOW SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU" mentality.
And then there's the subbers, a breed that survives entirely on e-peen, but that is undermined from three sides by the:
a) 100% weeb Japanophiles who will criticize anything you do
b) Self-aggrandizing "fluent" speakers who deem your service worthless
c) Lack of attention and e-peen sucking because of the smaller audiences compared to anime

All in all, it's the perfect recipe for a shitshow of a community.

The years of Japan being on the forefront of tech are long past. They've moved into more of a high-end market of niche products rather than the absolute market dominance they established decades ago by swarming the market with engineering genius at prices that just destroyed the competition.

Mechanical design is no longer important, almost everything is solid-state these days in tech. What's the point in developing a complex system of rotors and capstans to move tape efficiently when you can just throw in a 2 cent IC that'll drive anything you want it to, or a flash chip that can hold a few thousand times more data in a hundredth of the size?

Honestly, I wish Japan could stay behind the times forever. I miss the Galapagos phones, I miss when Tokyo wasn't a sterile shithole filled with tourists, I miss old Japan. And it's only getting worse, day in, day out, it's like watching a relative deteriorate from terminal cancer.

Japanese doesn't really have accents, it has "dialects", which are basically just a nice way of erasing variant languages. There are old people in parts of the country who are literally unintelligible to your average tokyoite, they have to be translated with subtitles. The only one of these that's really acceptable is Osakan, which is basically just a more brusque sounding Japanese commonly associated with comedians, because talking in a more impolite, personal manner is seen as more friendly and more conducive to comedy. Everyone else just tries to eliminate their regional speech when they come to the big city, because otherwise they'll be seen as a country bumpkin.
