Rom hack recommendation without the blog post this time:

Hyper Metroid. It's fucking good. peak upside: lacks all the things that tend to irk me about SM hacks, except for... Peak downside: (from my experience) was larger maps making the backtracking aspects of Super Metroid a bit of a pain. Otherwise it was amazing and different enough that the original to feel like a whole new experience.

While im at it do you guys know any other hacks for SM that are good? I've heard Super Zero mission is neat, but aside from that i don't hear much.

Also, i remember reading about a /vr/ SMW romhack collaboration a while back (maybe 6 months) - did that go anywhere? If so does anyone have a link?

I'm guessing the answer is no, but is there any sort of romhack that gets rid of SNES add-on chip stuff from games to make the roms playable on an everdrive? >vanilla
>on par with the original game in terms of challenge
>you won't find many hacks like this, since most romhackers make something they would enjoy and they tend to be experts at the game they are hacking

>normal
>much harder than the original game, usually from the very start, likely to require special techniques and skills the vanilla game doesn't
>most common hack you will find, these hacks are the reason most romhacks are considered "hard mode" hacks

>kaizo
>designed to be as hard as possible to play
>less common than normal hacks but more common than vanilla hacks, only masochists play this shit on real hardware, everyone else savestates through and then says "look what I beat!"

I mean I can go and look for a point list of features but I'd prefer to hear the opinion of someone who played it. You know a lot of those sound great but then aren't what you expected.

>> No.5131629

>>5129578
Well that's actually a bit of a composite problem. You know how some games used to be hard as nails because the developers tested the game to death and kept finding it progressively easier to the point they had to up the challenge? Combine that with a player that knows the game even more than that, then designs their own levels.
The only way they are gonna consider it challenging is by making it a lot harder or to rely more on advanced techniques or exploits.
It's sadly a natural thing unless the thing has several testers of varying skill levels to keep things in check.

Any noteworthy SM64 romhacks that work on real hardware via flashcart?

Do the Final Fantasy V/VI GBA music hacks (replacing the iffy GBA music with the SNES music) work on real hardware, and if so, how exactly? My understanding is that the reason for the GBA FF's shittier music was because of an inferior soundchip. Do the romhacks just add pre-recorded SNES tracks or what?

Like, take a good long look at this level: in one part you're keeping an enemy alive by pressing On/Off blocks at the right time and in another part you're fucking about with vertical screen wrap and gravity. These are ideas that could easily be the main gimmick of their own levels but instead you're awkwardly blending them together resulting in a shitty unfocused level. These goddamned kids and their new-fangled tools...Back in my day we didn't have all these sprite tools and AddMusics, we had TRASM, and boy did it do its job. We didn't need a goddamned overhaul for TRASM, but then this goddamned new generation needed "a better assembler." A better assembler, as if that were possible! What kind of goddamned tomfoolery are these goddamned kids trying to pull on us older folks?! Brutal Mario didn't need your goddamned PIXIE or GIPPY or whatever goddamned tool you goddamned teenagers are using today. I can't even keep track of it, goddammit! What kind of name even is PIXIE? What, is Tinker Bell just going to magically solve all your goddamned problems? Goddamned kids always relying on fairy tales, it never changes! These goddamned teenagers are always causing a ruckus for us old folks and goddammit they make this shit too hard for older folks. I'm an old man, sonny, do I look like I know what a goddamn SA-1 remap is? I just want my good ol' reliable Yoshi's Island sprites, and you little goddamned rascals can't even convert the goddamned YI Ball n' Chain. The ball and chain, goddammit! That was a classic back in my day, and your new-fangled gadgets can't even add it into your hacks anymore because your new little gadgets can't even support the goddamn thing! Just work with me, boy! It's not that hard to go back to the old ways, goddammit, just give me back my goddamned TRASM! These goddamned kids don't know squat about how the oldies did it old-school.

Yes. This was done in game.

I used an level editor to move the block over (and the goomba away.)
Then I drew the graphics, 4 tiles for both states. Since the brick uses only two tiles, I placed the "This Post" graphics over the pipe graphics, and the "Bump" tiles over the beetle ones (as the hit block is a sprite and the game uses 8x8px tiles, the sprites can only use the sprite half of the tiles.)
The available documentation had the tile makeup of the brick, so that was easy to change. But there is a routine that changes the tiles to make the block disappear when hit, spawns a sprite version of the brick block to do the bouncing part, then changes the tile back to the brick graphics after it's done. So even if you change the tiles, they just turn back to normal after you hit the block.
To fix this, I set a write breakpoint on the PPU memory for that tile (hovering over the tile in the Name Table Viewer tells me what address it lives at.) The break triggered in the middle of a generic write_these_tiles_here function, so I repeated the process. I looked at where it got the value it was trying to write, checked out that memory address, and set a breakpoint there. When that one triggered, I looked at where it was coming from. At this chunk of memory, I noticed a "45 47 45 47" which was the tiles of the brick block I was looking for. I changed it and it worked, the graphics changed to the new tiles after being hit.
For the sprite, I took decided to try searching for "85 86 85 86", the tiles for the sprite version of the brick block. Unfortunately there were no results found. However I tried changing the order, "85 85 86 86" and found only one result. I changed it and it was what I hoped it was.

After a screen capture and trimming the footage, the result was this webm.

If you would like to try doing something of similar scope, feel free to ask and maybe we can walk you through how to do it.

Anyone here work with the SA-1 chip?

Anyone here have any general advice for someone trying to make a game work with the SA-1?

I've been off and on hacking Brainlord for quite a few years now. The game suffers from a extremely bad lag issue that pops up now and then, and I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what is causing the lag.

Went to SMWC for the first time in ages, and saw the SA-1 patch and everything useful that it does, and went and dug around a bit for some information on it, and it seems like trying to make Brainlord run some of it's main processes off the SA-1 chip would be extremely beneficial.
However, I can't find much information on it in regards to general information on how to make a game possibly work with it.

From what I understand, if you set the ROM up to act as if it has a SA-1 chip, everything should work fine just like that, but nothing will change or benefit from it until I change some of the algorithms in the ROM to calculate something using the SA-1 instead of the default SNES CPU.
So I'd need to tear the engine apart and try to make some of the more intensive things use the SA-1 to calculate something instead of the onboard.
But that's as far as my knowledge about the SA-1 goes so far.

What the other poster said is right. What you're thinking of is the MSU chip, which is essentially a ROM expansion meant for streaming data (Music is a prime example).

The SA-1 chip is a second processor that's roughly 4x faster than the main SNES CPU, with some built in goodies like a bit of extra RAM and SRAM.

You say that, but the moment there's even a hint in any post that you're a tranny, you get a lot of shit thrown your way, regardless of what board you're on. Meanwhile everywhere else on the internet acts like a echo chamber of ceaseless and needless white knights.
It's just a example, but 4chan is tolerable to you if you act normal to a 'anonymous standard' of sorts.
The rest of the internet is similar, but the standard is different. If you try to mention how dumb the echo chambers of each site is, you still get shit thrown your way in a similar manner.

If you can find a place with people that fit for you, that's great. Even if that does happen to be considered the 'cesspool of the internet'.

Is there any rom hack that has a good-to-decent story with an original cast of characters? Preferably one based off a game that had none of that, whether its SMW or anything else.

you should try a simple slowrom to fastrom header hack, to see if that resolves any of the issue and move onto sa1 based on your results. sa1 hacks require more work, due to them needing to change more than a couple lines of code to run optimized.

>> No.5173380

>>5173374
I suppose I should've said it in the original post, but Brainlord already runs with fastrom. So sadly that's not a option.
I'm aware trying to make it work with the SA-1 chip would be quite a bit more involved, but it seems like it's the only real option I have besides trying even further to figure out the cause of the lag and perhaps optimizing it.
Though from my findings, it could be any number of things, so that'd be a huge pain.
A upside to attempting to make it work with the SA-1 is, if I do end up doing it, it'd give me more to work with for future hacks I decide to do with the game, which would be pretty great as well.

But yeah, nah. Fastrom is already enabled. I don't have much of a option but to try the SA-1 route.

>We can't really continue this conversation because this thread or board isn't for discussing this, but I will say that a lot of /b/tards and even /pol/tards love trannies.
They 'love' us in the sense that they like the idea of having sex with the more attractive ones. They don't really see us as dating material.
I think it's partially for good reason. A lot of us aren't all that right in the head and demand the world be handed to us. But I strongly believe in giving everyone the chance to be known, and it's sad to see a lot of people don't think the same.
I was just trying to make a general point that 4chan just seems nice if you fit within it's norms, like any other place.
Though 4chan does have more room for outcasts, but not as much room as many seem to think.
Regardless, yeah, you're right, this isn't the place for it.

>Have you got an interest in rom hacking?
Yea, I'm the poster up above looking for SA-1 advice.
I'm 27 now and have been off and on rom hacking since I was 14 or so. The zelda64 games is what got me into it. When I went into hacking the GBA pokemon games for a few years.
At some point I ended up adopting Brainlord as my rom hacking love child, and I tore the game apart and documented a bunch of stuff. Most of the stuff on Brainlords cutting room floor page is due to my contributions.
Though my work isn't constant, I have a pretty poor attention span.

There's something absolutely amazing about taking a game you used to enjoy and just ripping it apart to learn more about it. You notice things about you might have never originally noticed, and you can sometimes appreciate the tricks the devs had to pull to make some things work.
It's a love-hate hobby, since getting into the grits of it can be painful. But it's still a fun hobby to go back to now and then.

Do you have any neat works you've done?

>> No.5173735

>>5173705
Aaah. I see. I gotta agree with you, I have noticed some of the stuff you've talked about in many of the boards.
>Do you have any neat works you've done?
No, unfortunately not. However, I do want to learn more and create my own romhacks in the future, especially for SMW and SMB3 if possible. Hence, why I am here in this thread. I am sick and tired of the competitive games I've spent the majority of the past 2 years playing (Overwatch, DotA 2, League, Counter Strike etc)
I want to actually have fun while playing games again, and not rage at some retard on my team who doesn't know how to push a button on his keyboard at the appropriate time, which pretty much sums all of the above games.
What sucks is I've probably spent upwards of like $120 on DotA2 skins and passes just in the past year alone. Money down the drain, but oh well.

>> No.5173765

>>5173735
Like I said, rom hacking is a love-hate hobby.
You can definitely gain a deeper appreciation for games you work on, and you can definitely have a lot of fun with it. But if you start getting into assembly, trying to get things to work 'just' the way you want can be a huuuge chore. It's super rewarding when you can finally pull it off though.
SMWC is a great site and I'm sure they'd be able to help with anything you have issues with in terms of SMW hacking.
The persons themselves can be questionable from time to time, but they are pretty passionate, welcoming, and tend to try to help others more than other communities.

>Competitive gaming
Yeah, I can understand all that. It's definitely the biggest reason I haven't tried to do anything competitive in years. When you have to rely on a team to win, people just don't like to work together very often. Ends up in frustration.

Goodluck with your rom hacking 'journey'. SMW/SMB3 are great places to start, so I think you're definitely off on the right foot.

The next version isn't coming out and the hack is on indefinite hiatus or so he says. He also didn't bother replacing the music in the current build even though it would have been piss easy.
Hi, I'm the guy who asked him to remove the music. The hack is on hiatus and I'm fine with him waiting until the next version to remove the music. What I'm hoping for is that, before the next version is completed and released, Shockslayer decides to release the source code, which is the main point of contention that lead to my request. If this doesn't happen by the time the next version comes out months down the line, then I do expect all my music to be removed, but I'm trying to remain diplomatic with him because an open source CC would be beneficial to the entire hacking community.

I don't see much of a reason to remove the music in the current build if nothing else is changed, since people will just play the previous build that still has my music. I like people hearing my music in Gen 2 Pokémon hacks, and I make my music source code public so other people can use them to make their hacks better (since not everyone is great at making music and it's good to use more than the vanilla music when making a ROMhack); the only issue is that CC being closed source might encourage other hackers in the GBC Pokémon hack community to be closed source as well, which would set the progress of the community back a ton. People hacking with the disassembly, making their hack source public, and allowing other hacks to use features they developed for it makes all the hacks better, and I really don't want to risk the community turning back into what the Gen 3 community is like where people keep their custom features to themselves and people spend development time recreating things that already exist in other hacks.

Playing Super Metroid Z-Factor. How am I supposed to get this missile expansion in Norfair?
The hack uses regular SM physics and moveset, so no shinespark-to-full-speed-run slope transitions, ballsparks or the like.

The flat platform above where the missile pack is located isn't long enough to get a shinespark going, so the only option seems to be to attempt from the room to the right, but I can't for the life of me figure out how that's supposed to be done. A standing horizontal shinespark just lands in the middle of the slope leading to the SB blocks and horizontal mid-air shinesparks either land just below the blocks or are guided by the last stretch of the slope and hit above the blocks.

The hack's description says that "special/advanced techniques are NOT required to beat it", but I'm starting to suspect beating it doesn't necessarily mean 100%ing it...

Final Fantasy III(VI): Brave New World

In case anyone here hasn't played it yet: they basically just take the original game and fix it everything that was fucking broken in it. Moogle charm and economizer removed; Ultima (and every other spell) now limited to specific characters, stats fixed (e.i. vigor effects appropriate abilities, stat growth system is vastly improved, evade actually works, stamina actually does something, etc), physical abilities actually effected by back-row (and putting characters in back-row is generally less overpowered), enemy AI is improved, english script is uncensored, etc etc etc.

Yep, speedballing was indeed the trick. Nailed it!
Seemed kind of daunting at first - speedboost through the right side door, jump over a pretty long chasm with a platform in the middle, to land on a pretty short ledge before the slope and the overhang before it - but it turned out easier than I thought it was going to be.

Quite cool hack so far by the way! Still wouldn't play this one from a flash cart on a real SNES though, as the creator seems to have had a massive boner for crumble block obstacles and sometimes downright CB trolling, as well as using one-way routes which can take ages to go around to get ot the room before them again. Plus retrying parts like getting this missile pack would have been an absolute pain in the ass without save states.
Navigation's occasionally been a bit of a bitch too, with crucial routes and power-ups hidden in such ways and without any clues that you'd expect the odd missile or power bomb expansions to be tucked away.
Some really cool and innovative level design techniques here and there too, like somehow making crumble blocks that prevent enemies but not you from passing through, though a couple of times those have been used in those aforementioned sources of frustration as well...
>can't figure out where to go next
>scour every room in the area where you're locked in with the X-ray scope

Could very well be. Forgot to mention were crumble blocks through which you can move through horizontally, but enemies can't. Pretty neat technique really, there's for instance this one vertical shaft that's totally straight for enemies to travel along, but has alcoves made with those special CBs that you can use for climbing up. Unfortunately those don't show up as such with the X-ray scope, but CBs, making you think you're not supposed to try and get up there because it looks to be impossible.
Perhaps there's someone knowledgeable in these things who could explain how this was done?

It's not too special, just a completed but unused tile in the game, known as the "Half-Ripper" tile in SMILE. Normally it's supposed to be invisible since it doesn't have a graphic assigned to it, so why the author changed it to a crumble block is a mystery.

Or open the rom in a yy-char, tile molester, or other graphic editor and copy-paste the letters onto whatever you prefer. Remember, the letters are probably in a lower bpp than the rest of the graphics.

I just played through MMX3: Zero Project twice, the second time on NG+ and it made me fall in love with X3. Zero is so much fun to play in this hack, and the abilities he was given make the powerup sequence less linear. They even made Black Zero really distinct from Golden X regarding the buffs he got. What other hacks take less-than-stellar X games and fix their biggest flaws? I know X5 and X6 both have hacks that rebalance or change mechanics but I'm not sure if those are recommended or not.

This dude is going all out making it more like a proper SoTN style Castlevania game. I spoke with him and he's even going as far as to add a proper gold system, add candles to the game and overhaul the level design of the mansions and give the bosses proper attack patterns.

This is what happened, yes. Essentially, dude came in, was talking about the hack, and then pretty much offhanded mentioned that he looked at "clop", IE, Brony porn.

The entire thread came to a stand still for a little bit as everyone reacted to that, and then he got banned real fast. Apparently elsewhere he just laughed it off.

Better than storming off in a rage and declaring the hack to be cancelled or throwing a fit because people dared to judge him, I suppose. He's not the FFT 1.3 dude.

You have more power than a hacker. No ROM hacker can do what you can so you have the upper hand.

Choose a game, announce you want to translate it and find a hacker friend (from here or from rhdn or whatever) and things will sort out
If a hacker does the same ("I can hack this, I need a translator") he will get laughed off

So I was looking at all the ASM hacks that are injectable into SMW roms and... some really good games could be designed with them. The whole engine could be spoofed into something else. You could make an exploration platformer that takes place in a single seamless level, with an inventory and dialogue and everything. Then I got to looking into it and realized half the shit can't be combined because they all use similar memory addresses. Would you be able to pick an arbitrary combination of pre-made ASM hacks and, with some knowledge, just change the memory addresses being used?

Secondarily, is there a hack/hack in progress that essentially does what i described above? Use the SMW base as a canvas for a whole new kind of game?

It just so happens that I'm pretty much making that exact concept, although it's across 6 or 7 smaller seamless levels instead of one big one. I haven't had any struggle getting things to fit together yet (vwf dialogue is a bitch and a half though), but some things were specially made for the hack by other people like the inventory system in this gif.
I'm pretty sure that you're able to change the memory address of patches, but what have you been trying to inject that's incompatible?

Well, finished Super Metroid Z-Factor yesterday. Can't take much credit for that item percentage for myself though, as I eventually grew tired of the hack's at times borderline BS cryptic map layout and resorted to peeking at a map from time to time.

Quite good ROM hack. Some truly stellar innovations and memorable parts, but unfortunately also some really annoying design choices. The good definitely outweighs the bad on this one, but it's not a hack that I'd want to play on real hardware without save states.

Pros:
+ amazing Tourian!
+ atmosphere
+ some really cool and innovative puzzles that I've not seen before in SM hacks
+ when the map design's good, it's really good
Cons:
- ...but on the other hand, when it's bad, it's got loads of my SM map pet peeves
- the main routes forward are too often well hidden and not hinted clearly enough, leading to aimless wandering around and even unintentional sequence breaking into overly hard sections for the players current power level
- hack maker seems to REALLY like his crumble blocks, with some traps using them bordering on trolling
- too many one-way routes where going back around takes a while
- map could use some shortcut routes between main areas for quicker traversing of the map after acquiring key items
- quite tightly timed escape sequence; not too bad (good luck trying to save the animals, though!), but could use either some more time on the clock or tweaking of some rooms (yeah... one last dickish crumble block trap room is what you really want)

Just played Spirit of Hackers up to the boss rush (where I ragequit due to wasting E-Tanks and getting a game over anyway). It's good, but has some real bullshit moments. Mr. X Stage 3 has a gigantic difficulty spike where you need to use a special weapon to traverse a maze of spikes and pits; they give you nine lives prior to the section but that doesn't make it any less difficult to do. There are a few sections in general during the Mr. X/Wily stages where the game just suddenly expects a lot more out of you before returning to its normal, near-vanilla difficulty. The special weapons are useful, Jet Adaptor is almost OP now due to the way they changed it (you hover in mid-air and can move in any direction before your meter runs out, making is like a shorter MM3 Rush Jet you can pull out at any time and which recharges its own ammo), and the bosses all have new attacks which are pretty fun. Knightman transforms into a sword to attack though, which kind of comes out of nowhere. The most bizarre thing to me is that Mr. X Stage 1 and Stage 4 are only two screens long, the second screen being the boss fight. It makes me feel like the hack is unfinished and they just wanted to release what they had so the hack wouldn't risk going back into development hell. What's here is good though, minus some bad difficulty spikes. It's not RM4MI-tier, but it's good enough and original enough to be worth a Megaman fan's time in my opinion. I'll probably go back and finish it tomorrow.
