Are any NES games still worth playing?

>> No.5181856

A majority of of them.

>> No.5181857

Yeah, a couple.

Not unless you're interested in the origins of franchises that got a lot better after their NES debut.

>> No.5181863

>>5181856
A majority of them weren't even worth playing at the time.

Although their difficulty tends to mainly be there due to how short the games would be otherwise, this does make for plenty of quick, fun platformers if absolutely nothing else. Most of the game series that I imagine you think of when you think of the NES (Mario, Megaman, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden...) legitimately do consist of mostly well designed games. There's even some underappreciated gems, like Shatterhand (my personal favorite) or Kabuki Quantum Fighter.

I will say, though, that generally speaking the series that went on to become Nintendo mainstays didn't have their best entries on the NES. The only exceptions I can think of are Mario 3, which is my favorite 2D Mario, and Castlevania III.

>>5181856
This is wrong though. A huge chunk of the overall NES library is straight-up shovelware.

Dig Dug, Galaga, Ice hockey to name a few

This one is fun

>> No.5181902

There are only a handful of games made after 1985 worth playing, so checking the NES library is at least less of a waste of time than bothering with the N64 or Xbox One or something.

>> No.5181907

Zelda 1 is legitimately timeless. Crystalis, its clone, is also good.
All Marios and Mega Mans are worth playing, although some aspects of the design are aggravating.
Kirby's Adventure, unless you're a challenge whore.
River City Ransom. A weirdly unique spin on beat-em-ups for its time, and still fun.

Any shooter/run 'n' gun if you're into that. They haven't changed much from the old days, so if you like them now, you'll like them from back then.

Its because of exactly this attitude that there's scores of great games like Faxanadu, Rollergames, Rock n' Ball, Gyrus, and on and on which are left unsung and can still be bought for 5 bucks or less.

a majority of video games in general can be easily ignored, and the NES has loads of garbage.

>>5181849
Of course. There are tons of them.
>>5181859
You mean worse.
>>5181856
I'd say more like half or a third of them are worth playing. The more successful a console is, the more shovelware you're going to find in it's library.

>> No.5182009

>>5181997
Does that make the GBA the most successful console ever then? Because it's certainly the king of shovelware.

>> No.5182026

There are quite a few games that are still fun to play. Theres also a lot of shitty games too though. The NES library is an interesting one. .

>> No.5182027

There's about 40 nes games that are still great. The rest is pretty mediocre/bad

>> No.5182031

>>5182009
Having shovelware doesn't mean a system is successful (look at the crap that got put out on the CDi), but a successful one will attract shovelware producers enticed by the easy money that comes with crapping out releases on a commercially successful console.

I'd argue that there are closer to 200 NES/Famicom games worth checking out, id you include Disk System titles.

>> No.5183368

>>5181849
Lots of them. Mario 3 has not been beat to this day. Nothing with mega man in the title is worth playing on NES though, just beware coz everyone will try and trick you into playing 2 or 3.

>> No.5183380

>>5182169
They really don't. GBA's library is massive yet only has about 20 truly great games. Wii and PS2 both have far more games with playing.

>> No.5183385

The NES has more good games than the SNES.

I still play Mr. Gimmick at least twice a week. Honestly there are a lot of good games worth playing on NES. Sure there are crap ones, but a lot of times even the bad ones can be so bad they are good, or it can be neat analyzing the gameplay mechanics or why they are bad. Hell, even a few bad games are amazing graphically or have amazing sound.

>> No.5183473

>>5183453
It's a spoof Zanac game, kind of like Parodius to Gradius. The folks who made Zanac also made Aleste, which is one of the best shmup franchises of all time.

>> No.5183474

>>5183453
Yes, Gun Nac is one of the best shooters on the NES. Its basically Xanac but with more humor and more clearly defined stage themes/designs.

If anything I think Xexyz is the odd game out in that chart.

>> No.5183484

>>5183453
Not the chart guy but I think it's mediocre.

>> No.5183608

With the exception of maybe Tetris and Crystalis, the NES is only good for platformers.

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Castlevania
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Kirby's Adventure
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden II: Dark Sword of Chaos
Batman: The Video Game
Ducktales
some others

all of the arcade ports are better on arcade cabinets. Zelda, Metroid, and Final Fantasy series all have related games on SNES that are better in my opinion.

It's THE majority. There can't be more than one majority so 'a majority' makes no sense. Back to school, bloody Amercians.
