Hi anon! :^)

>>5180481
I'm not sure if it's my favourite, but the first half of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdNIGDuS7e4 sticks with me from thief 2.
It evokes a "deep space" scene as much as it does the shadowcast undercroft of a dormant manor. The consistent shift between keys sets a torpid rhythm. As the volume increases with each sweep on the high key, to a peak, you can feel a churning of water under under your feet, like great waves. The pulsing electric hum and quavering chime, of the theme of metalcraft and electrical machinery, try to smother the ceaseless, patient drone of pure Thief in the background that you can more easily isolate later in the piece. There is a distinct sense of unease. I don't find this one calming. The opposite, in fact. It perfectly captures the feeling of trespassing and running out of time, but still being able to savour the false-coziness of a claustrophobic basement where only sleeping servants and dozing guards dwell.

From 1, I choose the first part of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDKE_HULnu4
I love being out on the prowl in The City. I've written a few of short stories focusing on it. My favourite FMs involve creeping catlike along sprawling residential labyrinths, and I think this piece captures the combination of having a spring in your step for a night on the town, yet through the least conventional avenues and out of every streetlight.

This is beautifully written, anon, and I absolutely agree with everything you said. I love the lonely, creepy atmosphere of Running Interference.

When you deliberately remove player options from the level design of immersive sims, you are completely ignorant of the developer's design philosophy and you should stop developing those fixes. Blocking paths that are part of the original level design is not the job of third party bug fixers. LGS added ladders outside proper level structures just in case curious players managed to manipulate the environment enough to make it past those boundaries. Being able to do stupid shit is what these games are for, and insisting that you know better than the level designers is impossibly arrogant. You're not the genius surpassing the masters. You're the retard so stupid that he thinks that he's the genius.

I was, stopped right after I started seeing that Q instead of the regular ol' hammers everywhere. At first I thought that the authors of Retreival meant to reference the Death of Garrett somehow (their mission is the one that more openly than others references the TTLG forums and the DromEd community, after all), but apparently that wasn't the case. I'd always known about DarkLoader's fundamental flaw but, since I never suffered from it, I thought I could have worried about it another day. Now I've got some cleaning to do in the game's directory but for now I'm enjoying the scene: the Hammerites being overtaken by this heretical new cult.

And finally, another part of this FM I loved. Sneaking up on someone from below gives you an advantage on who's above you, sure, but as long as you don't know what's up there you're still vulnerable. It's a natural kind of challenge, since you can't rely on all your senses like you usually do.
Not as hard as it may look at first, especially after the two guards with the overlapping patrol route have been dealt with, but it was a fun obstacle to deal with. Really felt like I was trying to take a castle by surprise, only that there wasn't any castle to take among those walls.

Bloodstone Prison is next, the third mission by Kung Fu Gecko. Not his last but the next will be on T2: soon that game will enter this chronology we're following, so we'll have to keep an eye on that.
Another Hammerite prison, this time haunted from top to bottom. A fellow thief and ex-keeper who doesn't want us killed, for a change, and a holy sword that could help us fight the undead. Sounds promising.

No she isn't. She's a naive young girl convinced by a manipulative man to act as his instrument of revenge. She's not edgy, she's brainwashed by a liar to see nothing but vile hateful monsters around her because he wants her lust for vengeance to cloud her judgement. It eventually does and she just obeys his commands unquestioningly. That development isn't written or delivered fantastically, it's pretty hamfisted, but she's not just "nothing personnel".

It's a sketch of a mission I might make. As an anon in the last thread pointed out, Thief 1's typical building textures are incredibly garish, which is good but I thought it would be fun to do something primarily using the game's relatively few grey textures, including some rarely utilized ones from the Lost City. TDP feels more contained. every mission has high quality, even though the last two are often critisised for being linear. in Gold, the new missions are pretty controversial and of varying quality. on the other hand, the new missions are also pretty important for fleshing out the plot a bit.

I'd say play both.

Don't listen to the other anons. Yes, it verges on the easy side, but when it comes to Thief fancontent you either have cryptic 90s adventure game hard, or somewhat beatable if you waste more time than it is worth.

T2X gets everything right as a fanmade game that is set between T1-2. Yeah, Zaya is on the edgy side, but she shuts her face for 95% of the time during gameplay, so its fine. Theres some awesome stuff that no FM or OM did before, like moving train level, detachable zombie limbs, brothel level, among other things.

If you bother slogging through FMs its definitely worth to check T2X out.

You people ruin everything. It has nothing to do with any sort of punk aesthetics.
And the entire god-damn point of the world design was to pick the surrealistic stuff from Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films and the expressionist movies 30s and 40s, then throw them into blender with medieval fantasy and served cold. Thief 2 is pretty much screams "The City of Lost Children", which was huge back then.

You know, two weeks ago I had a lecture with students and we were talking about how daoism brings all sort of fluidity to Chinese movies and nothing is ever certain and precise. This being Far East Studies, everyone was familiar with all the concepts needed to easily grasp it.
And then we were watching a documentry did by British for British about said fluidity. Or rather the 70 minutes of struggle of bunch of Brits that were trying to force everything to a mold, drawer and compartment, all with proper labels. And laughing our asses at their futile effort to cram something that exists as "uncrammable" into a precisely, well-defined box.
And here you are, asking which of "punk" aesthetics Thief is, while in your mind the "punk" suffix exists as completely meaningless and not bringing anything to the table, but also as a shortcut and excuse to try to cram something ORIGINAL into pre-existing pattern.
Don't do that. Please.
Just don't.
"Thinking" in labels is what computers are good at. And it would be wasteful to take a human being reduce it to the capacity of a machine that can be manufactured for about 150 bucks. Because that means you are not competitive and thus should extinct.

And we have only one month to try them all. 25 diveded by 4 comes down to 6.25 missions each week. Overdrive!
This is my first time playing a GORT mission.

I dislike the converging patrol routes of the citizens and the guards. It becomes very difficult to predict your window of opportunity. The place with the bowman in front of the Keeper sign is a frustrating choke point. People just keep coming. When you knock someone out and a guard spots the body, they get riled up, start to move faster and have improved senses. This FM is quite punishing when you make a mistake. No way you are going to outrun those guards or fend them off. Good luck finding a spot where you can knock them all out. And if you get spotted in the Mages Area, a message pops up saying there are mages roaming the street. As long as you manage to survive that place, with a bowman that shoots 5 arrows at the same time, wizards with magic swords. Great! The Mages Area looks so nice, the magic stuff is amazing (apart from locking yourself in the Room of Statues if you don't have the bag of powder), but the placement of guards and wizards makes sneaking so difficult.

This FM is very rigid in steps you have to take. In the beginning I got to the northside warehouse, pushed a barrel towards the stone wall (at that point I climbed various barrels to access the back alley) and tried to mantle. Wasn't allowed to. I had to use a gas mine to knock out the guards. I tried to look for a house I could enter but didn't find one? Those three guards will not attack you until you pull out a weapon, as opposed to the guards on the street who try to kill you on sight. After you get the poker and walk outside, the door at the northside warehouse opens.

This FM remixes OMs: Assassins, The opera from Song of the Caverns and the warehouse part of Shipping and Receiving. It is huge and you have to take breaks. 4 hours and I am still going.

I did not like this.

I do not like this.

Oh good someone else who doesn't like it either. I just outright gave up on it when I got to the choke point you mentioned. I agree with everything you mentioned about the patrol routes and the certain steps required to play this FM, I will add that architecture is a little too simple for my taste and I don't like how much the opera house in this level matches the one from Song of the Caverns. One thing I found annoying was the abundance of marble flooring and lack of moss arrows.

If you look at the Opera from Song of the Caverns, you can also find simplistic architecture. The single texture hallways in the basement. Raoul's secret room. Gort made use of the textures and there are some very nice rooms. There is a reference to TDP here, considering the anniversary. I don't mind that it matches in textures. Or did you mean the architecture in general?
The opera in Song of the Caverns was elaborate. Lot of hallways and some secret passageways. The opera by GORT is very small. 3 levels. Two of them consist of a hallway with some seats for guests. No secret passageways. No readables about the place, apart from the scroll carried by someone outdoors. Certain doors can't be opened, giving me the impression the rest of the opera, part of the world is closed off. The marble floors and the riled up guards make traversing this place difficult.

It looks similar, but it does not play similar.

Yeah I won't lie, it's been exhausting so far.
The pieces that make up this mission don't go together well. I enjoyed the mixing of some classic Thief areas, even when they look a lot like the originals. It's what the player is supposed to do in those old places and what happens there that brings something new to the formula, but there's something off about both the objectives and the challenge.

The player must follow a linear, set path: there's nothing else to do beside what you're supposed to do, and only by doing that you'll be able to proceed. The only time this is done subtly is with the Mage's Guild entrance. It doesn't work as well with the rest of these transitions. The one you missed is the worst offender: a man appears and then attacks the three guards only if you've read a scroll about how he'll do that.
The emptiness of some areas make the mission look more like a maze than anything, where a wrong turn will just lead you to a dead end. Is it the intended purpose? You know what I think of this kind of stuff otherwise: don't show me a door if you don't want me to open it. Pic related is quite symbolic in that regard.

As for the difficulty, this FM is meant to be challenging, but sneaking past entire platoons of mutant guards isn't interesting enough to justify giving up on Thief's explorative side. Just like with pixelhunt FMs, exaggerating one side always makes the whole mission feel wrong. Even when a FM focuses on sneaking over exploration (or viceversa), the other element should still be there to support the main one. In this case, some of the stuff that makes this FM more challenging than others (like the guards that can't be blackjacked), instead of blending with the setting and mood, takes over to put the player to the test. I'm not against the introduction of new, maybe weird elements, like regular guards that can go berserk or the unpredictable patrol routes, but instead of being one of this FM's strenghts they feel out of place.

So far I've played
>Darkness, Walk With Us
Really fun mission but the second half is pretty linear and some of the puzzles veer into adventure game logic territory (most of them are clever or at least sensible).
>Order of the Dew
Really short but alright. It's the author's first FM and was apparently made quickly in the last weeks before the deadline, shows promise if they decide to keep making FMs.
>Lord G
Very interesting premise and some nice details but the mission is pretty much unfinished and can very easily reach an unwinnable state. Its author is anonymous but it's seemingly their first FM. Could have been good if they were able to spend more time on it (they say they had less time available than expected).
>The Upward Spiral
Not a contest mission but it's amazing anyway.
>The Sound of a Burrick in a Room
By far the best one I've played. It's evidently skacky's entry despite the pseudonym. The scale is jaw-dropping especially when you get up on top of the church, yet I never got lost or wandered in circles with no idea where to go. Just really good stuff, as usual.

Currently playing The Burning Bedlam, it's really cool.

(cont, probably 1/2)
I should have played the rest of the mission before being so harsh with it. It's still true that the first half of it, which sets up the second, feels a little rough around the edges, somewhat sterile, but what I said about the mission as a whole (it being maze-like, empty or the challenge feeling off) gets progressively less worse, a little more balanced and in some cases it stops being a problem.

The Mages' Guild, as you said, looks great. This one is a new take on the old concept. A school of wizardry, mysterious but also elegant, orderly a foundation. Most of its rooms have a role, no more dead ends. The problem is that, sometimes, it looks like those rooms are there just to give the player a hint/key/item, as if each readable or piece of loot is part of a treasure hunt the player is trying to win. Something's missing.
The loot situation is weird. It's not hidden too well, it's just scarce. You find lone pieces of loot after exploring empty areas that could have used some to feel more alive, interesting. The second half of the Thief backbone, the readables, are also lacking. They only refer to stuff that the player should absolutely know, reading like something that was hidden here and there to help us out. It's interesting, really, these two flaws don't hinder the player in any way: the loot requirement is low, and since the readables are so specific we know they're all important, simplifying our search for info. But they make everything seem artificial, like a Thief-themed amusement park.

(I knew it, 2/2)
The level of the challenge is not as exaggerated as it looks at first. More than one big overdone challenge, the mission is a succession of three trials and the way the level looks, works and stands in the way of the player changes depending on what we're supposed to do. It's more like your classic level (it's a broad term, I know) than anything, just with a lot of back and forth. Not your classic Thief experience (which is funny, given the circumstances), but once the player accepts that's how things are, it starts making sense.
While the overcrowded streets of the first segment were an absolute no fun allowed zone, the mission then becomes interesting enough to justify most of the new, weird stuff it throws at you. Even the final ghosting objective wasn't so bad. I knew that area way too well because of the first part of the mission, so already knowing the right path to avoid all those guards felt satisfying.
Speaking of classics and celebrating the game and DromEd's roots, the "Don't do it-Fuck you for doing it" will never get old.

You can tell it's a Skacky mission cause its a BIG and TALL city. The boy loves building that type of shit.

And since the other BIG and TALL city map is by Melan, who inspired Skacky in the first place, it should be obvious.

Not sure why he went with a pseudonym though, maybe he wanted to see genuine reactions instead of "omg skacky you done did it again xd"? He does get jerked off a lot by the TTLG faithful, so I can understand wanting to remove a bias.

You can also tell because he posted screenshots of it ages ago but you're probably right that the pseudonym is probably just lessening name recognition for the sake of being fair in a competition. There are several missions with anonymous or aliased authors. It seems like Lost Among the Forsaken is DrK's, and maybe Catacombs of Knoss is Firemage's? Whistling of the Gears could be a new author but they provide a pseudonym, which would be weird if they didn't have a known name to start with. All of my guesses for who would've made that one are credited in the readme for various things.

I read about that man. He will pull his pants down and fart? Or does he just drop a gas mine? I don't expect someone to do the job for you. Someone mentions a place with something that allows you to enter the opera, so you think you can enter a house. You can't. However, you are given three gas mines. You don't have to wait for him, but I would have preferred a more silent way to enter.

In the loadout store you can buy a tip. It warns you about the fact that the behavior of the guards is similar to the watch in the city with the strange dogs? What is this referring to?

About the readables. I have seen some people on various platforms asking questions, to which the answer could be found in a vital scroll. I saw a playthrough on twitter. The person had entered the Mages' Guild. He didn't know what to do with a magic item he found and how to deal with the barrier. I believe the Mages' Guild Novice Poem that explains all of that. That poem can be found in one of the offices in the opera? Are you even able to return to that place after you forged the bracelet? I saw another one on TTLG asking how to get out of the Room of Statues. I alluded to it in a previous post. You need a heavy sack to pull a switch-a-roo like Indiana Jones, or else you will end up stuck in that room. That sack can be found in a classroom. In the other classroom there is a journal by a teacher that talks about a heavy sack. It is very hard to reach those classrooms, because of the guards (the guard placement is in general not great). Maybe people will not go there, because the placement scares them off (Oh, I'll deal with it later)? At least, I did until I stopped caring about getting spotted. The purpose of the sack is never hinted at in relation to the puzzle. You will have to reload once that gate closes.

How come people miss the essential information?

And after you grabbed the scepter, a door opens in the warehouse area. Why? Just another hurdle to go through or was there a reason storywise? At that point I gave up about getting spotted, so the route between the opera and the warehouse had a lot of NPCs. With the help of a flash bomb and a speed potion I was able get to the warehouse with relative ease, surprisingly. And why is there suddenly a ghosting objective?

About that door, as I was running away from the guards I opened it with the hope of an escape route. Didn't have the time to read the plaque. Oops.

I'm on my fourth mission in the contest so far, and none have held a candle to The Sound of a Burrick in a Room. It's a nice touch how it starts you in the same spot outside of the Overlord's Fancy in the Thieves Guild, and you can even go up to the guard outside and get some fun dialogue. Everything's well-connected, with plenty of secret passages and routes, landmarks, and such. Manages to have a good level of detail without feeling cluttered. It's a joy to explore, and figure out the politics of the merchants through readables while stealing from all of them.

If this isn't the best out of the contest, then I'm in for a goddamn treat

Darkness Walks With Us, which I'm taking a break on since it looks like I'll have to start over, since I didn't grab any of the hammers from the locker in the inn's pool, which I believe are needed to progress. And I can't get back up the rope to the fireplace. I'm liking it pretty well so far though, for a more horror-styled mission.

The Dewinder Manor, which was really short, simple, but still enjoyable for what it was.

I've been on An Enigmatic Treasure but haven't been enjoying it much. Lots of wide open streets with a near-endless stream of patrols, and exploring isn't really worth it. The opera house has only one entrance that an NPC makes accessible for you, and the ambient sounds that play inside are way too constant. The actual stage and viewing booths inside is an interesting setpiece, though. We'll see how I feel once I've finished it.

What ones have y'all done, which have you enjoyed?

You don't need those.
>And I can't get back up the rope to the fireplace
You aren't supposed to.

Anyway, I've played
>Darkness Walk With Us
Really liked it, but as you can see it gets a bit cryptic. Not so much that you can't figure it out but enough that you might decide to ask for help anyway. The pressure plate that can only be weighed down with a statue's head was really stupid, why wouldn't Garrett standing on it have the same effect? You'd be forgiven for not even realizing it's a pressure plate after trying it with the wrong object to no avail.
>Lord G
Unfinished mission, some cool ideas and the premise is like something out of the Twilight Zone which is awesome, but it isn't developed at all and it's very easy to put the mission in an unwinnable state.
>The Burning Bedlam
Mostly linear, but designed in a way where it's not bothersome or even very noticeable. Old Quarter theme with great atmosphere, and the scale of some of the areas is cool.
>The Whistling of the Gears
It has an interesting layout with an incredible level of detail and captures the feeling of the end of TDP (>>5181001), but sometimes the architectural greebles get in the way of jumps which is irritating. The real problem is, as I said >>5203151, it's a great mission that finishes well after it should have ended. I can tell I'm going to enjoy replays more than the first time for that reason.
>Sound of a Burrick in a Room
My favorite so far, same as you. Despite being fucking gargantuan, it's just the right length. Where this mission gives you a nice shortcut back to the start by way of the burrick tunnels and the butcher shop, a similar mission might spring four more objectives on you and tell you to go on an easter egg hunt through the city you've already combed.

2. Play through on Expert but use quicksaves occasionally. Use everything you can use stealthily, do not be seen, explore and get as much loot as possible, and try to find secrets.
3. If you still need extra challenge, try to stay undetected without saving, try to ghost the mission altogether or if you're insane, ghost the mission without saving.

Some taffers also enjoy knocking out everyone and then exploring every nook and cranny in order to find every piece of loot.

I just finished playing Heart and Soul and I figured out why it's great. It uses the level design formula of The Sword, in that you can have an enjoyable maze that isn't overly confusing, if you make each area distinct. IMO, try to keep saves for whenever you finish an objective. Saving every time you need to sneak past a guard is just going to make it more tedious than it actually is. Unless the mission absolutely forbids it, getting caught is not a mission failure, and you have a chance to run away. If you're in a shadow while getting chased, most cases you can just circle strafe the hostile guards and knock them out anyway.

If there's one thing I'd change about thief, it's to make it so KO'd guards/civilians get woken up if other guards find their body. Cause when you really think about, KOs in Thief are basically just kills that don't fail the "don't kill civilians/anyone" objectives.

How the hell do you escape Lord G? It isn't enough that the loot requirement is insane and the house is 75% solid rock, there are no hints on where the player should go in order to get out. I even managed to glitch outside the walls after exhausting every exterior gate just in case the mission end would trigger once I'm outside, but no matter where I go I can't end the mission. It's a shame because of how much the creator put detail on the outside areas of the mission zone.

In the room on the top floor of the manor past the patrolling guard, there's a locked room (key is on one of the passive ai's on the first floor) with a small switch I think beneath a table. That opens a secret door to the treasury, which is locked but there's another key which opens the gate by the greenhouse. Also the mission actually is unfinished but it ends pretty shortly after that.

>> No.5204665

>>5204636
Okay I finally got to the cutscene legit and didn't trap myself outside the level, but then when I got back to the treasury door, the key had vanished from my inventory. So I decided that the mission was over.
Seriously though, the fundamental design of this mission from an objectives standpoint is completely contrary to how Thief missions should go. In fact it's contrary to how objectives themselves should work in a game in general. When your base objective is X and Escape, the player should be able to Escape when X is completed. You can't change objectives in an obscure area that the player potentially never runs into when in the middle of completing X and then base the Escape objective around new objectives. Take Thief 2's Blackmail for example. The first part of the mission is pretty open, but eventually it bottlenecks you as you approach your main objective, and the player inevitably comes across the objective change. When the main objective is a loot total and the only other objective is to escape, you have to allow the player to escape because there is no guarantee that they'll reach the twist.

>> No.5204678

Where the fuck are the blueprints in Whistling of the Gears? I found the note that mentions a locker in Tudor's quarters but I see no such thing.

>>5204665
What's funny is that the treasury leads to a point of no return. If you reach that without meeting the loot goal (probably impossible without finding the well-hidden Eye), you're trapped and can't win. The texturing in the final area also makes it very clear how unfinished the mission is. I think the tweest is pretty cool though, would like to see what the author would do with it if they had enough time.

>> No.5204689

>>5204678
The mission has a lot of cool features, but it's basically broken. It's got a courtyard surrounding the entire house instead of something just in the front, which makes the whole location feel more real. Outside the walls there is actual distant geometry ie. space doesn't just begin beyond the gate. A thinking player can expect specific things. For example I assumed that there would be an external servant house, and servants would have some kind of access to the main house. And they do. The best thing in this kind of non-linear level design is when you can use deductive reasoning and it actually works.

Does the Thief universe have official names for the months? I've noticed that some readables in fan missions have had arbitrary names for months. Dishonored has its own unique names, related to fishing mostly. I just read up on the origins of the month names in my language and it's actually pretty interesting. And kinda edgy, considering that November is just the death month.

Month of Ice Beads
Month of Earth's Return
Month of Slash-and-Burn

>How come people miss the essential information?
A side effect of the readables problem I didn't consider at first. Not only a lack of redables detracts from a mission's personality, but when most of them contain important info that is mentioned only once, it means that finding that readable is automatically part of completing the objective, and there's no way around that. You either find the book that specifically refers to the problem you're facing or you're left in the dark. I got lucky since I usually explore buildings by looking in every room before going for the obviously important ones, so I ended up gathering all the info I needed.
While it makes sense for someone's secret to be found only in a diary (like in the rogue guard's case), a matter that concerns more than a few characters should be mentioned more than once, so that not only it will feel like that episode is part of the FM's bigger story, but it will also give the player a chance of understanding what to do with that information.

>And why is there suddenly a ghosting objective?
If I had to guess, it's to prevent you from just dashing through the streets and get to the exit point with the entire guild after you, but still safe (and the Builder knows I tried). It forces you to pay attention, once again, to the renewed guards' placement, just like it did at first by telling you to pickpocket a woman who's pratically escorted by an elite team of supersoldiers. The mission is all about following the instructions instead of figuring out a solution. Many of its parts, like the cutscenes that arbitrarily tell you where to go or the man that attacks the guards only if you approach him, don't need to be understood.
That's not exactly Thief's spirit, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either. It depends on what one's looking for in a FM. I do think this mission in particualr didn't manage to be "not Thief, but still good", and that's ultimately what matters.

A lot of it depends on the mission you're playing, since there's no built-in campaign of any kind yet. I wouldn't say it's the true Thief 4, but it's the closest to a modern Thief that you can get, even if the visuals of the engine are already pretty dated. The whole thing is a bit of a mixed bag. Dynamic lighting is excellent to have, but the audio design doesn't sound as good as T1/2 particularly some of the voice acting, IMO. The lockpicking mechanic is more involved and interesting, but the movement feels rather clunky maybe it's just because I'm so used to T1/2's movement
Overall, it's worth checking out regardless of some of the issues because, you know, it's free, and there are some quite good missions for it. It's just that there's far more FMs for T1/2, and people are still making them. If you're interested in making missions, I'm not sure how TDM compares- I assume it's easier than making things in DROMED but I could be wrong.

And I played a bit of 'The Sound of a Burrick in a Room' and 'The Whistling of the Gears'. I've complained a while ago that guards can't follow you. They can't climb or jump. The setting changes the challenge. When walking on the streets, you have to dodge guards and stay in the shadows. You have to wait for your window of opportunity to go from place to place safely or else you will get cut to pieces. When you walking on the roof, it goes from sneaking to platforming. You have to time the jumps. You have to carefully shoot your rope arrow. Try to find your footing when you landed on a narrow ledge. Pray that Garrett mantles. If he does mantle, pray he doesn't stop halfway.

Keepers need you again to solve their problems.

You mean does it have the clunky, antiquated control scheme of Ultima Underworld and System Shock. No. The game has full mouselook. The default control bindings for Thief 1 are still a bit weird but you can easily rebind them. They fixed this for Thief 2 - and I would recommend using Thief 2's defaults on Thief 1

Am I allowed to mention Thief 3 here and ask you if it's a good game? I kinda suck at T1 and 2 (have to savescum a lot) so maybe T3 would be just the right game in the series for me, since it's supposedly easier

>> No.5213775

>>5213067
Thief 3 is fine. It's just more clunky and a bit casualized. The third person player model's animations interfere with all of your movements, expert difficulty killing restriction was removed, and all loot objectives are standardized into a very gamey "3-uniques and a percentage" -format.
However there are things that hardly anyone mentions that Thief 3 actually did better than the previous games. For example, footstep volume on different surfaces was balanced better so there's actually a full gradient of different volumes, not just extremely silent and extremely loud volumes. Also, using world objects and using inventory items have separate keys now, and the compass is unintrusively always visible on screen.
And of course, full dynamic lighting allows expanded manipulation of shadows for your advantage. There's even a part where you can use the shadow of a patrolling NPC to sneak past hostiles to your objective.
If you like savescumming, then you're out of luck with T3 because the loading screens have a static load delay based on the progress bar graphic, that cannot be accelerated no matter how powerful your PC is. Every time you load it takes just as long as it did 14 years ago.

I actually thought it had some really cool ideas, like the highly customizable difficulty (something I really, really wish was available in older Thief games), and the AI is honestly far better than any other Thief game. I remember trying to lure two guards away from a doorway by throwing a bottle off to the side and was dismayed when all I accomplished was making them both alert while one looked for the disturbance and the other continued to guard the door. I love Thief, but it was always far too easy to dispatch the braindead guards in every game.

However, the story is retarded and most of the cool supernatural elements that made the original games have such an interesting setting are all mostly vacant, and the levels themselves are much more linear and not as much fun to explore and traverse. New Garrett also sucks because he's no longer a sarcastic, reluctantly heroic charmer, but a generic brooding protagonist with zero personality not voiced by Stephen Russell. The only thing I really remember about the gameplay itself was that you couldn't jump, and iirc, you had to use a context sensitive key to get on top of ledges, which could lead to some frustrating moments where the game thinks you wanted to do something else because consoles. Also, swooping was stupid.

TFix is for Thief Gold, tafferpatcher is for Thief 2 (there is no Thief2fix). Both of these are pretty much just configurations of the underlying NewDark engine upgrade. TFix has a lite version that you should go with, just follow the instructions in pic related and do >>5208559 if you want tasty unfiltered textures. Tafferpatcher is a bit out of date so if you care about those unfiltered textures, you'll just have to install the latest version of newdark (1.26) instead and configure it.

I'm not much older than Thief and I could figure it out, and the fuckfest that is dromed. The problem isn't that the games have aged, it's that those people trying to play it have.
And what's fucked is that if they do remake it, even if it's worse than the originals, that's what people will play, which will in turn cut off the already weak flow of newcomers to the original games, thus ending the supply of new FM authors or players.
Or maybe they'll do a "much needed" remaster (even though the GOG version works out of the box) but fuck it up by putting the HD texture pack on by default or some stupid shit.

They're not even making what they originally promised or teased with the playable demo, it's something else again and as you said, it's absolute pointless.

Steam page still has shots from the original demo, which is what people played and then backed. If you can track down a copy it's brilliant.

CTRL - crouch
SPC - Jump
Alt - creep

Mouse 4 - hide weapon
Mouse 5 - hide item
Mouse wheel - zoom
q,e - lean to sides
y - lean forward

I think they will somehow improve Thief, GOG version of nightdive's System Shock 2 release with community fixes and newdark is great.

>>5224517
They've returned to demo vision, thankfully.

You do realise that you're seeing the same game, but bottom is with old textures or untextured, right? They are totally reusing assets from the demo.

In theory, but given the gross mis-management of the project so far i'm fairly certain they're just shitting this out to cover themselves legally and "HD placeholder" is what we'll get left with.

I'd love to be wrong, but they seem to be going back yet again to re-invent the wheel for the third time which makes absolutely no sense.

No, the bottom is with the current "HD textures" they've been making, there's hours of worthless streams if you want to watch them in action wasting time on pointless shit.

They are not using the original textures.

But they didn't actually do anything to improve SS2, they just sell it with newdark installed.
I guess I can see your point about keys but I've always seen the inventory as being like a key ring. Like lockpicking, it's there to put you in tight situations with patrolling guards, similar to any scene in a movie where characters frantically try to find the right key on a ring, only to make it through the door at the last moment.

I've always enjoyed how careful you have to be at putting things down/stacking crates in Thief.

It's kinda surprising they even risked having physics based objects in a game like Thief given the propensity for physics based shit to sperg out and the dire consequences that could have in a stealth game.

Wheel menus are a compromise caused by console gamepads not having enough buttons. Not some grand new innovation. Pressing one button to select something is simpler than holding a button and then moving the mouse and clicking. Not to mention that the latter has contextuality. Mouse should be for aiming. Unsheathing a sword has nothing to do with looking around, so they shouldn't be using the same input in any contex. Climbing and jumping have things in common and have mutually exclusive application, so they can be contextually done using the same key without any problems. Using items and using world objects also have something in common, but it can cause problems with accidental item usage if they're done with the same key.
And if your fingers are not long enough for you to reach the 9 key to select noisemaker arrows, then your parents should be disciplined for letting a toddler play a game rated for 12+.

In other words, spending time wisely. Taking the original low-resolution diffuse-only textures and creating modern PBR shader based high-resolution 3-dimensional equivalents is exactly the point.

I think I owe the entirety of my insane keyboard muscle memory to a combination of Thief with everything from ~ to Backspace and F1-F12 and the Mechwarrior series for all those other mysterious keys east of WASD, not to mention learning how to use them all with ctrl, alt and shift modifiers to....oh and Insterstate 76 for it's wild, but somehow ridiculously effective use of the numpad.

This makes me happy, whilst not as frothingly pissed off as the other anon, I have been pretty unimpressed with Nightdive's handling of the whole Systemshock Reboot debacle, 4 years and 1.3 mil down the toilet to make a simple reboot is a bit of a joke.

I've worked for studios where we'd have around 200 hours to make a map (not Thief mind you) including having to make all the assets, so assuming someone is working full time, or in full maniac mode, 100-150 hours over two weeks wouldn't be unheard of and you could produce a VERY good map in that time.

Really though anon, speed doesn't matter, you're not making maps for a living, enjoy it at your own pace, learn, experiment, iterate and refine until you're happy.

Wheel menus improved PC gaming a lot too, just by curb cut effect, It's always easier and faster/more intuitive to choose ability in a popup screen and simple move the mouse a bit than recap the hotkey, search it or look at the keyboard when you need it just right now.

Ah. Someone wasn't using NewDark. It's the patch that really saves Thief. I would reccomend NewDark Lite though. I also took the bindings from my Thief 2 ini folder and popped them into Thief 1's folders (it lets you run with W + Shift - regular NewDark allows this too though) because the regular NewDark uses Thief 2's AI which I think they gimped a little bit. It results in a different experience. Seriously just download fucking NewDark. As the other anon said, it's what they sell System Shock 2 with by default.

Do you know why most wheel menus pause or slow down the game when you open the wheel? Because it's inherently less efficient so the game has to compensate for you executing several actions to achieve a single goal as opposed to executing a single action to achieve a single goal. It's not an improvement, it is literally a compromise. But I guess it might be a suitable piece of handicap-accessibility for someone who has to look at the keyboard when trying to locate keys.
And I still think that there shouldn't be an ingame context where your basic mouselook input suddenly does not make you look around but instead selects things on a wheel. What's the in-lore explanation for the character's neck muscles suddenly not working? Or more specifically, why are the nerve endings that should control his neck muscles suddenly being used to fiddle with things on his equipment belt? Probably the same neurological disorder that Sam Fisher has in Splinter Cell Conviction where all of a sudden he can dive through a window when attempting to click a light switch.
