Was I the only one who licked cartridges when they didn't start after blowing on them?
Sometimes blowing wasn't enough. If I remember correctly the taste wasn't that bad as you might think.

>> No.5171192

I'm sure you were the only one who licked for cartridges after blowing them.

Yes, I think so.

Blowing in cartridges is for idiots who don't understand the corrosive effects of moisture on copper. Licking them is for closeted faggots who grow up to tongue men's assholes for money.

i think out of desperation i did this with a disc once. same with dowsing it with sink water and/or putting toothpaste on it

How does that saying go? I bet you could lick the chrome off a trailer hitch? Something like that - what I'm saying is you yearn to use your mouth to pleasure things.

Well ignorance to this fact was the unfortunately reality to most of us who were children when receiving the console.

And no, I never licked mine. For some reason licking random objects has always sounded like a bad idea to me.

>> No.5171463

No anon. I did that too. And so did my cousin and sister.
And then I wondered why all my cartridges got corroded and consoles broke.
What can I say. Dumb kids doing dumb shit.

>> No.5171472

>>5171187
I didn't lick them, but when blowing didn't work I would slam the fucking cartridge into the console like a fucking retard. IDK why, I assumed the slam did something but I would gently slide it in then SLAM it into place. I'm surprised my parents never told me to stop acting like a caveman.

I did this as a child too, eventually I broke the pin connector and gave up on it, I dug out the yellowed mess and replaced the connector about 8 years ago and revived the poor thing. Now it gets the respect it deserves.

So what is it that makes cartridges not be read half the time? Is it just dust or whatever getting in there? And what's the best way to make them work when this happens?

>> No.5173723

>>5171187
Not lick, but my brother would actually put his mouth on the bottom of the cartridge and blow into it getting spit all over it. All of our old games became green and corroded because he was a retard.

>So what is it that makes cartridges not be read half the time?
It's the internal contacts loosening up and not pressing against the cartridge pins the way they're supposed to. All you need to do is just take the cart out and try again, then repeat until it works. The solution to the problem is fully replacing the socket thing that the carts plug into so you'll be dealing with fresh pins.

I did it, too, OP. It seriously works better than blowing.

>> No.5176201

Sure, I mean it's the next logical step to cleaning them isn't it? Wet it and wipe the dust/stuff away. However I wouldn't really do it now due to the possibility of it causing oxidation or some shit, you know like how iron rusts, moisture can't be good for electronics long term.

When I first heard about the "blowing doesn't even help" meme I was extremely skeptical. It sounded like some millenial clickbait bro science, you know the "everything you thought you knew about x was wrong" type of clickbait. But when I actually checked it out, it visually looked scary what blowing can do to the connectors over time. I still think blowing helps, but I try to avoid it a lot now and especially licking. (that weird feeling when talking about licking electronic).

Nah but I'd lick the little screws holding them in place. Would also lick batteries, cock, the wheels on toy cars, and this bit underneath the dining table that kinda tasted like a mix between wood and fig newtons.

Place your index finger in the cartridge indent, gently wiggle it side to side, reboot. You should never need to blow into another NES cart with this technique

>> No.5179113

>How else are you supposed to remove dust
A dry cloth?
Isopropyl alcohol?
An air canister?
Not leaving the contacts exposed to open air in a dusty room in the first place?
Realizing that dust isn't what's making your game not read but rather the loosening of the contacts in the slot where the cartridge plugs in, requiring the cart to simply be re-seated multiple times until it reads properly?

I'm not disagreeing with not cleaning by licking or blowing, but water pipes are copper and last for 50+ years.

They typically don't have electricity running through them, though, while the pins on an NES cart do.
