Cove is not even top tier or most beginner friendly. Rampart (Ivor), Castle (Valeska) or Dungeon (Shakti), or even Wystan (Fortress) are king for easy starts and Necro / Conflux / Dungeon / Rampart are probably the top tier overall. Cove is strong (not Strong), but still not all the way at the top.
If you play in a setting where you "bet" some of your starting gold to choose a specific faction instead of relying on luck (you should be paid to have to play Tower), Cove will not be the most expensive to pick at all. Neither will it usually be the first ban.

Not particularly relevant on Jebus Cross and many other rich multiplayer templates. Nobody plays MP on 200% because it's just RNG rolls. Shakti puts you to a great start. In HotA, Lorelei and Hags rush is a very good way to start as well. Overlords are great in general.

In Single Player 200% starts I would hesitate to call Cove OP either. HotA at least removed the need to ban the factions that were OP in SoD, even though they still remain strong

Prayer is basically superior to Haste if it's late-game, because it's like a couple of spells in one, and Water is overall better than Air in most Single Player maps.

Idk what this guy means about Bloodlust. I like Frenzy if I'm planning on never getting hit.

>> No.5170962

No, but Fire spells is pretty terrible at killing things outside of Armageddon. And Undeads turned out to be immune to all the debuffs, which is what Fire is really really good at in HOMM3.

I rate Air above water, but I do admit that that ranking is contingent on what level 5 spells I get, I do agree that haste isn't really that useful (though I would say moreso end-game than early game). But I've also actually been rating water below fire as well so I might have to rethink my beliefs...
>>5170962
Berserk, blind, slayer and sacrifice are all very useful though. I also think Bloodlust is arguably better than prayer since AR > all. I might be wrong though, as I said I usually don't even take water magic.

Related to campaigns, why are there so many missions where you're against opponent(s) who not only have more towns than you, but also have one-way teleporters to your town(s)? My main may be completely unstoppable, but having to town portal back so often turns those missions into a slog that I just can't be bothered to go through.

>> No.5170994

>>5170990
You don't need your main to defend your towns, just get castle and buy a bunch of whatever creature has the highest health.

>> No.5170997

>>5170987
I rate water above air, because water has Bless, Prayer and Teleport which are all superb. Air has haste and dimension door. In combat, water is far superior. The only problem is that you're nearly guaranteed to get haste, but bless is less common as t1, and prayer and teleport are somewhat uncommon. Yeah, dimension door allows all kinds of fuckery, but it's rare.

>> No.5171013

>>5170997
Chain lightning and destroy undead are also really nice for random stacks, as well as disrupting ray.

Bless is kind of bad, bloodlust is better on average. I do agree teleport is nice, but kind of redundant in the late game since you have generally fast/flying creatures (even moreso with mass haste). You didn't mention clone, which is the only water spell I would really consider to be a major potential game changer, though having it on expert level doesn't really convey much of an advantage imo.

Que? A multiplier of at least 1.3 on damage is kind of bad? Bloodlust gives you +6 attack to melee attacks only, which equals to a 30% increase as well if I remember my math. Which I may well not.

>> No.5171075

>>5171064
Well I guess it's kind of situational. Bless would be better on lower tier creatures with larger damage ranges while bloodlust is (on average) better on higher tiers. Though again, might just be my bias since I have played very little taking water magic.

>> No.5171093

>>5171013
Bless and bloodlust give the same damage increase, 30%, in the best case scenario. Which is that the bloodlusted stack has higher attack than the defending one.
In every other case, bless gives you a better bonus. Bless also works with ranged units, unlike bloodlust. And lust is a fire spell.
Now this is assuming I remember my spell and damage multipliers correctly. Which I may not.
>>5171075
Try it. Prayer alone is absolutely fantastic. Nearly as good a speed increase as haste, combined with defense and attack bonuses.

After trying it a few more times, I got it to work with the patch. So I tried it a few more times to try and pinpoint exactly why it had worked. Turns out if you use the fly scroll on a Knight, it won't work. I'm not sure if how the game works natively, but I had no clue. If I use the scroll on any other character, it will work. I made a team of four Knights and none of them were able to fly, despite the scroll activating and being visible in the sidebar. So yeah, that's apparently a thing.

Bless vs. bloodlust depends on the damage range of the unit Tbh, therefore bless would most often be better on low tiers and weaker on higher tiers, and no bloodlust is a higher potential damage increase since it's flat +6 attack while bless on expert is max native damage +1. But yeah, situational really.

Honestly might explore water magic more, yeah, I just don't see why I would in normal play bank on getting prayer when I see several more useful spells both in battle and on field in air and fire.

>> No.5171234

New to the thread, but I think that Water's biggest draw is the potential to cast expert dispel and cure, and block whatever horrible shit another person might throw at your army.

But I actually prefer Air because I do think that mass Haste wins games; it's the most powerful and flexible level 1 spell for creeping, and I stand by the assertion that you win or lose most games by creeping better than your opponents do.

>> No.5171271

>>5171234
Yeah, dispel and cure are good, but IMO it's not necessarily worth getting on expert since there are few mass spells that are that bad or lack other counters (like slow). I mean I'm sure there are many players out there that are much better than me and that do very well using water magic, but for me it pretty much always feels like a waste of a slot.

Of course it is. My entire point about Water is that it's better in those long-term games and drawn-out campaigns, like Unleashing the Bloodthirsty, because in such a setup planning to get Expert Prayer is going to be better in the long-term along with all of the other necessary spells.

But obviously, Expert Haste is fantastic in a quicker game.

For me it's 'Fall of Sandro'. Not because it's hard, but because it feels redundant. I firmly believe that 'Union' should've been the culmination of the campaign. Just compared to the mages, another not so great tier 4 shooter; they have 2 less attack, 1 more defense, 1 less average base damage, same health and speed, and cost marginally less. They do not have the magical support ability nor the avoiding of obstacle penalties. And that's ignoring the awesome non-shooters that are available with the T4 creatures. Can you really say they're as good as vampires/VLs? Sworsman/crusaders? The superfast Pegasai/Silver Pegasai? Hell, even the 60 HP ogre magi are probably better, with that pure tanking ability.

Intelligence is really good on XL maps against multiple AIs where you end up going on months-long campaigns. Something like Unleashing the Bloodthirsty. If the map creator is fond of "puzzle" fights where you simply have to outlast your opponent with having higher mana sustain, Intelligence is the way to go. Intelligence also really helps you spam Dimension Door / Town Portal / Fly, which are all really strong.

Of all the magic-enhancing skills that aren't related to elemental magic mastery, Intelligence is the best. I mean, I'd pick it any day over Sorcery, Eagle Eye, Mysticism and Scholar.

It's not an ideal skill in your typical MP match, but it's absolutely excellent in SP, especially given how much the AI is susceptible to cheese and tactics such as "leave only one unit in the enemy camp blinded. You now have an infinite amount of free turns where only you can act, lasting as long as you have mana for re-blinding. You can use this to resurrect your entire fallen army or simply just setup a certain kill on the enemy hero to ensure his artifacts are yours.

This doesn't happen against another human; the most attrition of this sort you are allowed to do in most matches is engaging in Resurrection / Implosion wars. But that's not that common.

You're correct, I first need to figure out how to create another major zone (somewhat inspired by Ysgith from 'Thronebreaker') before joining these areas together and filling out the rest of the map.
>Also, would Fortress build roads? They negate the massive native terrain movement advantage
I imagined that there would be one main road that connects the castle and the village as well as leading to the exit of the swamp. This sort of makes sense from a world-building standpoint since any non-natives entering the swamp to trade would get lost and end up as food for Hydras, Wyverns, Basilisks, Serpent Flies, Trolls, Carnivorous plants and probably even frogs. However, everything not on the main path should be hard to get to unless you're a native, which is further emphasized by those shallows that only Fortress faction can use to outmaneuver the invaders (as long as you have enough mana, I suppose).

Level 2 starting heroes got buffed across the board, so Calh became a really good, in-meta starting hero.
Also Devils aren't "shit tier", they just don't win "level 7 vs level 7" contests. But the non-retal on a superfast unit is great - Inferno is actually really good at taking utopias, a handful of archdevils can be downright abusive. They just have a rough early game and their heroes aren't exactly winners, but Calh and Ignatius can make do.
Some buffs to their build order to make it smoother were also given out, but I can't remember what exactly.
Really, Tower got arguably bigger buffs than Inferno (a drastic build order fix) and is still less favored in the competitive circles because their only good starter is Solmyr (who suffers on maps without wells) and they don't benefit from the level 2 buffs simply because they rely horribly on their t1 and their t2 is shit. Lorelei, Wystan, Calh, Tyraxor are all meta in HotA - Piquedram never will be.

>> No.5177509

>>5177481
Also it's really disingenuous to compare Lich buffs to Magog buffs simply because Magogs are available much earlier and successful Necros generally base their strategy on Vampire Lord expansion (due to lifesteal) and not particularly on Liches.
Buffed Magogs set you up to win games. Liches don't. Assembling Cloak of the Undead King is a "win more" mechanic of sorts simply because late-game necro is mostly unstoppable anyway.

Depends on your strategy. I sometimes go for a hero with an intelligence trait as the main. Whenever that hero levels, I will always try to that boost that trait. I would keep the bulk of my army garrisoned in important towns while I take my main hero with a small stack fast units on a guerrila campaign against AI-controlled heroes, towns, and wandering monsters. Using dimension door and flying, I can get across the map very quickly and attak poorly defended towns, weak stacks, and sometimes strong stacks. Using summon elementals and AoE spells, I'll either destroy the enemy armies completely or at least reduce their numbers through attrition. In the case of the later, I would run away.

>I'm not fond of the use of lucid pools but I've never been a fan of magical terrains in the first place
I understand - the cyan of the Lucid Pools doesn't really blend well with the darker water terrain. However, this was done to simulate the depth of water as well as to offer a unique playing field for the defenders. As I've said before, the Fortress would be the only faction to have access to Water Walk, thus enabling them to bypass stronger heroes and gank the weaker heroes trying to steal dwellings or get to the obelisk (check pic). The enemy player could theoretically traverse through these shallows as well with the Summon Boat spell, but that would be so inefficient that they're essentially barred from using them.

It's risky to leave your town undefended or minimally defended. A small garrison is just going to get slaughtered. You'll also lose income and unit production.

With a small raiding party, I can gauge the strength and abilities of the enemy without risking most of my troops.

I generally only move my main army once I know about the enemy's locations/strength and a large portion of the map or if I have to get through a heavily guarded location.

Some enemy heroes have devasting spells like chain lightning, armaggedon, or death ripple on top of have a very large army. In this case, even if you win against the enemy, you'll lose a lot of your troops. Better to just whittle them down with guerrila attacks before they reach your main army.

Calh in HotA makes for an effective starter due to an across-the-board buff to level 2 heroes, and his archery + specialty fit in nicely because new Magogs are actually really good.
Then there's Ignatius. Tactics + a lot of expendable cannon fodder at level 1 is actually a big deal, makes them good at expanding.
Pyre is born with Logistics, so she's good by default, and a starting Ballista is actually a great boon, esp. if you can bait the AI into wasting their turn on hitting it.
Demoniacs aren't amazing but there are plenty of factions with overall mediocre heroes that you're better off exchanging for a superior tavern hero if/when the opportunity arises - Castle or Tower, for example, suffer from the same problem.

Not the guy you're responding to but:

>It's risky to leave your town undefended or minimally defended. A small garrison is just going to get slaughtered. You'll also lose income and unit production.
Not really. The income loss of a day or two is minimal, and as long as you're doing a good job recruiting and you don't lose the town on day seven to have your opponent recruit, you won't lose manpower. And while he's running around taking your town, you take his.

>With a small raiding party, I can gauge the strength and abilities of the enemy without risking most of my troops.
But you do risk something infinitely more valuable, an expensive high level hero by having him sit around with a small force that might get completely defeated.

>

I think you'll find that in almost all cases, you'll lose more than you gain by having "guerilla attacks" with small forces against a large force with a high level hero.

>Its just that they are not complete monsters like Gunnar, Kyrre, Dessa or Lord Mulich.
Exactly right. As Inferno, get a generic Barbarian or Overlord from the tavern if at all possible. Your first hero pick should focus on boosting your early game, hence why Ignatius is popular here.

I've even seen Fiona (bonus dogs for a stronger army and Scouting means you can plan out early movement a little better) and Rashka (+1 speed for Efreeti is good because they're legitimately a good unit and, if my philosophy is already to turn my starting main Inferno hero into a secondary, Scholar can save you movement points).

I tried testing how well the intelligence bonus scales in the map editor - at level 59 (aka 99999999 exp points), a hero with 99 knowledge has 990 spell points, a hero with expert Intelligence 1980, and a hero with expert Intelligence and the Intelligence speciality has a whooping 5400 spell points. You could cast anywhere between 180 and 220 Implosions before you'd run out of mana. However, I can't remember ever having a hero that was over level 40 and had over 55 knowledge (even with artifacts), as well as ever being a situation where I needed to cast so many spells.

This is useful mostly for abusing the shit out of travel spells and winning fights in some tough-as-balls scenarios where your strategy might very well be to run the enemy AI out of mana before you can truly go on the offensive.
Also, you don't necessarily need to strive for max level scaling - Intelligence is already going to give a substantial MP bonus to a level 20 hero with an appropriate knowledge level.
Point is, spellcasting is extremely abusive against AI and Intelligence lets you get away with more of said abuse. Intelligence also synergizes well with stuff like Mana Vortex.

There's much more to that, and visuals are heavily accompanied by fluff.
For example, you have silly, almost comical mischievous imps;
lascivious succubi and incubi, whose facial expressions emanate delight and pleasure;
immobile gargoyles who, once they lived, thoughtlessly followed merciless orders, and after eternity of suffering turned into statues hardened as their hearts;
molochs with giant tongues, who gorge themselves upon the souls, like their biblical counterpart to whom the human sacrifices were made;
three-headed abyssal devil with paralyzing ability is very reminiscent of Satan frozen into the icy lake of Cocytus in Dante's Divine Comedy.

Well, 5th level upgrades were added only in the sequel, previously the demon dord was the top dog. Canonically, though, abyssals, overlords, and tiamaths are greater demons aligning with the wonder kid against Bethy.

I wonder how far they where into their rooster before they finalized their towns.
I guess they also realized their rooster was too "dude" focused, and ditched a lot of player races from Might and Magic for grabbing a few sprites fresh of the 3D model photo copy magic software.

I mean, MM7 have the Necromancer faction with Goblins, Liches and Wraiths. And Rocks plaguing the overworld.
I would image they reworked tower at the least twice to make it more monster focused.
I would also like to add: One of the bad things about Homm5+ is that its a very dude focused game in terms of units. Heroes 3 and 4 did a lot of work to weed that out, since monster dudes in armor do not mesh well once you need 7-8 slots and 5-7 towns.

>How good is Age Of Wonders 3? Is it a decent HOMM replacement?
I haven't played through the previous games (don't judge me pls) but I can say I had fun playing through it for some time.
However, my OCD prevented me from completely enjoying the game and sort of soured the latter campaign missions. If you don't have issues with your hero not being completely upgraded and not wanting to conquer everything on the map before completing the objectives, despite the fact you could've finished the game long time ago, I'd definitely say the game is worth a shot.
It also has a random-map generator so you can play it indefinitely. Go watch TotalBiscuit's (goodnight sweet prince) review of it to get a general feel of the game:

>What are the best HOMM clones?
Since you already brought up "Age of Wonders", I presume that you already played the older games. Older "King's Bounty" games are sort of Heroes-like as far as I understand (and were made by the same person who was in charge for the first three HoMM games) although you command only one hero. "Disciples" are somewhat similar, as they focus on heroes and building up your army, but in a different way (you aren't interested in having more units but having a few high-tier units that can wreck shit).

MM6 has quests
And a sorta terrible melee/magic balance, because there is a lot of deceptive mechanics. Like running being bad for your attack speed, so you need to hold shift. Or what Recovery reduction on skills do, since they are really really strong.
The Jank is simply something you get used to, and the game is so long you adapt to several layers of jank and clear a lot of dungeons and do a lot of quests.

MM7 have promotion quests instead of quests, and some terrible decisions regarding the new class setup. I mean, you have Thief and Ranger(could be same class), and Ranger vs Archer which end up being weird. And "one set of GM skills per class" where some are technically mandatory(Body GM) and others are just to stop bumping your skills to 40x to get 100% repair/identify, or things like GM Merchant being sorta useless because you should be filthy rich to even get into a second faction.
For all its gameplay improvements, they still added a lot of jank because the dev cycle got cut short, so the game is shorter. And you end up in this situation where you NEED stuff like Master Water/Air to even do anything for a causal playtrough, and it just feels sour.

Not really. Most towns 1 week recruitment is around the same 28,000 cost as a town with a capital generates. Unless you’re in the odd position of having 1 and only 1 town with few external dwellings, you’ll be in a position to turn extra gold into troops

There's two specific exceptions to the "gold over XP" rule that I'd ever bother following:
1) if the XP from the chest will tip me over to level up an important magic school faster. Especially if I picked someone like Grindan - a very fine starter hero. Expert Slow a turn or two faster might get me more dividends than a bonus dwelling or a Citadel in those cases.
2) if I'm levelling up a new primary hero, or if I'm levelling up a very specific mook hero - for example, getting Jeddite or Alamar to become a potent secondary with decent Spell Power to mop up stacks that aren't worth my time, but more importantly, to get them Expert Scholar so that they can teach Resurrection to my main hero.

So yeah, XP from chests is IMHO only really good if your next level up can be something groundbreaking. Otherwise you don't really gain much tempo from it, and unless the game is already won (10+ towns each providing a shitload of income), you likely need gold all the time.

>I love it
Thanks! I've just completed the bottom-left part of the map (well, I may tinker with it a little bit).
This particular environment is unique, as it is the only part of the concept map with a muddy river, dead vegetation as well as those purple shrubs and mushrooms. I tried to give an impression of an inhospitable environment. Sulfur mine next to the muddy river suggests that the water is full of sulfur (among other thing) which the natives somehow extract from it. However, the purple shrubs seem to like whatever is in the water, which is why they grow next to it. Likewise, the mushrooms are the only things growing in that dead forest, thus indicating that the environment is toxic or the mushrooms themselves are responsible for the decay of the forest. The Serpent Flies and recluse Seers both seem to like this environment, but not the wyverns, whose lair is right next to the cliffside, way above the stench and the rot.

>I'm a little bothered by the small river in the north-east that seems to come out of nowhere

Really difficult. Only the Russians and some Chinese on ERA (using a script that replaces all assets upon visiting a chosen town) succeeded at it. Your best bet is waiting for VCMI - a new engine that emulates Heroes 3 gameplay and utilises its assets. Right now, there's a real push from the devs to improve AI, but you can already add new spells, creatures, secondary skills, even whole towns and play original maps with them. All in the framework of existing H3 mechanics and a few expanded ones. It's not exaclty script-tier, thought its possibilities are also slowly being expanded. Not as high priority as AI, though. However, anyone who knows C++ can easily download the newest build to code and contribute new features.

It's been my dream for some long time now. Back in the day, some Russians made one fine town screen. Only thing left to do is whip up some arctic-oriented units and put everything into game. And there are 42 words in Vori language for cheese.

>According to the lore, three creatures lived on Vori - Snow Elves, Frost Giants and Azure dragons.
So their Tier 7 unit would be Azure Dragons then. How'd you even balance that - make the dwelling cost 5 times as much as any other Tier 7 one? You'd also need to diversify their composition a bit - three types of Giants and three types of Elves seems a little bit stale.

Honestly just make it a monster faction with a really cool looking Giant for the Tier 7, where the elves are heroes.

So i would recommend gigantic maneating shrimps as Tier 6. And some shitty penguin unit in there somewhere, that upgrades to "Tuxes". Its a good and not terribly subtle joke.

HOMM1: Warlocks are a complete monster faction, only using monsters as manpower
Forest is Rampart 1:1 except Phoenix isntead of Green dragons
Plains is Stronghold 1:1
And Castle is still Castle, being a terrible but cool faction.
So its almost 1:1 HOMM3 with fewer factions and cool monsters.
HOMM1 is about how a alien overlord decides its a good idea to crash the ruling Warlock dynasty, which are described a little like how some channeler clans rule a part of the uncivilized world in Wheel of Time.
Spoiler: He crashes the dynasty and names himself king, and decides its a good idea to have 2 sons

HOMM2 is about how civil war almost ruins the planet ruling Dynasty of Gryphonharts. Turns out alien overlord forgot to bring alongside his nanomachines and magic, so he dies of old age. Roland almost loses the war terribly, but somehow wins because neither of the 2 brothers are good at Warfare.
Once thats sorted out, MM6 happens afterwards.

Kreegan's only seem to employ their Tier 4 as actual alien demons, with the rest of their army being a gigantic cult with quite a few elementals and magic lifeforms.

Not really because HoMM3 humans have Ancient constructs for support (Archangels). It changes them up a wee bit.
They're not even that terrible of a faction, they're good rushers on S maps.
Also if we're talking factions then HoMM2 has the Wizard town (very much meant to have been replaced with Tower in HoMM3) and the Necromancer town.

HOMM do the thing where there is enough unique units to break up the faction. Monks are different from Archers, Pikemen are not even remotely like Crusaders
Cavalriers end up working so different they are unique. And so do the angels.
Meanwhile the Gryphons are horde type monster units. It just works so well.
Meanwhile the 2nd faction with a lot of Humanoids is suddenly Stronghold with Orcs, Goblins, Ogres and Wolf Riders. And that works well too.
I jsut don't feel that any of Ubisofts games managed to do a good lineup any justice. Even for HOMM1-2 the gold armord melee unit is suppose to be some roided up legendary superhuman adventurer. And it manages to sell it, just like the difference between Pikeman and Crusader is completely stark. The high level unit moves and attacks almost in a alien manner compared to the basic units.

HOMM4 has this problem, even somewhat spread to other factions such as Nature where its lineup is suddenly Animal no magic theme or some shit, without managing to sell it properly.
Or Ubisofts take on it, where its on all factions. I.E both elf factions is suddenly 50% elf without anything to make them look or feel unique from units inside the same faction.
Things like particles and animations being samey also makes it worse, on top of a general worse art direction.

Well after playing HOMM7, the design for Forge still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Forge is suppose to be a "Dark magic path is canon" ending where you suddenly have a mechanical army outfitted with crazy stuff like laser pistols and whatever things they can cobble together in raw barbarism.
Its also suppose to be a nod to the line that tends to accompany every single ultimate gear tier in HOMM: "Made in the Heavenly Forge".

The first 3 units works, because they are grunts augmented by new powerful tech. The rest of the faction do not work because it turns it into 6 humanoids + a dragon.
Forge essentially has the design problems of Ubisofts HOMM games.

You want 1 person cranking Light to maximize those buff spells, especially if you have more than 1 melee character. For everyone else dump remaining points into water or air as sparks and poison spray will be your main damage dealers. For the character you are showing you should have gotten expert dagger ages ago, and expert leather recently. You should have someone going up in ID item, and I usually find it useful to get someone up to master alchemy for divine power potions to counteract the mana drain from Devil Captains. If you have all of those then just keep dumping points into water as poison spray will keep getting stronger and a caster heavy team is pretty weak light side without high water/air magic.

Yes you can go over body 10 for a Cleric if you already have GM merchant and don't have anything better to spend the points on.

Also, what's your favorite town and why?
Mine's Dungeon. I know it's not the strongest, but I like how it plays. Early on, you get beholders and medusas as strong shooters, which lets you take on many neutral stacks with no losses. Minotaurs don't really look special, but they're very strong for their tier. Manticores are nothing to write home about. Dragons are all kinds of awesome, even if the magic immunity is more of a curse than a blessing since no stone skin/shield. Sieging is easy since you have three flyers and two shooters, which leaves only your trogs and minotaurs twiddling their thumbs. The troops are cheap, and you're guaranteed to get Gunnar as your main.

Thing is you don't play every faction the same way.
Take Inferno as an example. They don't have much in terms of early creeping compared to towns like Sylvan so you have to utilize gating to the fullest and deleb/warmachines. Have a big vermin stack in the corner surrounded by 1 man fodder stacks then use hero attacks and mark of the damned. By the time gated stacks die(yes even the 1's can be gated) you should have the enemy weakened enough to finish them off. If the unit is large even better, gating should delay it from reaching your main stacks before its dead.
Deleb of course is a no brainier with a fireball ballista and warmachines but other heroes like Nebiros aren't bad either depending on the faction you are facing.
Your core build should be Warmachines, Logistics and Dark. These are a must have especially logistics since other than Sylvan Inferno has the highest chance of finding it or rather they most certainly 9/10 always get it and can be a huge advantage over the other factions who might outgun you in terms of creeping.

As an example Fortress is considered to have godlike late game with the help of runes(just check them out they are ridiculous) but their creeping is shit yes even compared to Inferno, they have just 2% chance of getting logistics and no dwarf hero starts with it. People like to say they are OP and everything but especially on ubisoft maps by players who know what they are doing they can be brutally raped since you can get ahead of them so fast, might factions like Inferno with logistics/gating and Magic factions with, duh magic.

>Also, what's your favorite town and why?
Let me preface this by saying that I don't play HoMM III competitively, so I chose my favorite town based on comfiness and fun instead on cost efficiency and viable strategies.
So, my favorite is Rampart.

From a gameplay perspective, they have one fantastic (Elves), four good (Centaurs, Pegasi, Unicorns, Dragons), one mediocre (Dendroids) and one shitty creature type (Dwarves) in their rooster. A good portion of their heroes start with Archery skill (and I love using Ranged units because I'm a cheapskate that doesn't love losing units) and have a good chance to get Earth Magic. Kyrre is one of the three heroes in the game that have the Logistics specialization, which I consider to be one of the best specializations in the game (especially important when you are not allowed to use mobility spells).

The town is also a looker - the aesthetic and atmosphere of Rampart enforced by Paul Romero's amazing soundtrack all serve to make you feel like you are in harmony with nature. The glade surrounded by misty woodland in which the town is located looks so comfy that you can almost smell the earthy fragrance just by looking at the screen. Another thing that I really like is how, as you gradually build up your city, the forest gradually expands to reclaim the clearing and two dwellings (Enchanted Spring and Dragon Cliffs) drastically change the landscape, making the area even more rugged and beautiful.
Oh, and did I mention the soundtrack? Let me just leave the link to the theme right here for your convenience:

>Sieging is easy since you have three flyers and two shooters
You know, I never though about it, but yeah - Dungeon is a great faction for sieging castles (not that you'd be doing that too often).

>discover the 2005 online community

I'd say Castle and Necropolis town screens look a tad better than their D2 counterparts. D2's Legion is head and shoulders above Inferno aesthetically and Clans can't really be compared to Tower. That being said, I love Rampart and Elven Alliance town screens equally but for different reasons; for example, how the Sentry upgrade adds a flowing river next to that big-ass tree or how building certain Rampart dwellings shows the forest reclaiming the clearing.

This man is lying, but also has your best interests in mind in that you should really know how to play very well with every castle before you begin to worry about tier lists.

Russian players call them like that. Also behemoths are "bears", manticores are "cats".

Take a very quick power nap if you're feeling sluggish, drink loads of coffee when you get up.

0. I doubt you can power nap
1. Van Hoff: 30 fast breaths to get dizzy, then hold breath for 1-2 minutes
2. Add some milk or butter to the first cup of coffee, to make it digest better
3. Learn to live with the suffering, nothing can really help you, especially if you need to do stuff like driving where you need to be mentally functional to not get into a accident.

You can let the enemy flag the bad dwellings you don't want creatures from and then never retake them. Or just never flag them in the first place, tho that'll usually hurt you in the early game more than you gain in the late game.
Otherwise, no. It chooses a random external dwelling you've flagged.

Only flag one dwelling, really only a good idea if you know what the map contains. A good example would be one of the maps in Dragon's Blood.

Are there any unusual maps that you like?
I just played Hoard. No town on that map can build tier 4 or higher dwellings, so you have to make do with t1-t3 troops. It led some very interesting tactics and armies. Maps size is medium with underground, so it doesn't take that long.

>Are there any unusual maps that you like?
The first one that came to my mind is 'From the Depths of Hell' (a HotA map). You need to conquer a well-defended enemy castle in 50 days whilst defending your own town from weekly invasions by progressively stronger heroes. I have to confess that I've never beat the scenario on Impossible.

Oh, I forgot - you can only use one hero (tavern can't be built and there are no prisons) whose specialization is... you guessed it, Eagle Eye!

This old dungeon concept looks perhaps even uglier than forge, but I wish they kept the mage guild as a stalactite building, just redone to fit with the aesthetic of the current dungeon.
