>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Holy shit, you guys weren't memeing. I dusted off my 25 kg samsung syncmaster with the intention to play some dark games like Thief or Naissancee, and the perceived contrast difference is astonishing. It also feels that the highlights are brighter too, it hurts to look at white lights in a dim room in game.
Also tried out the first Quake at 640x480, looked crisp and blocky, I liked it a lot. Probably I will play most of the older games on the crt instead of fiddling with widescreen patches and looking at tiny art and fonts at modern resolutions.

The round CRTs are ideal. Flat CRTs will never have perfect screen geometry in the corners. Also, most flat screen CRTs are those late 90's/early 2000's EDTVs that support 480p/720p/1080i (great for 6th gen and some 7th) at the cost of not properly displaying 240p content with scanlines.

c'mon man flatscreens are not bang wagoning. I was picking up late model wegas in 2010 because they have great, crisp pictures. I have 3 now. When pvmemes become unobtainable like arcade monitors, that component input or rgb mod is going to look good to a lot of people. yes, the geometry can be off but for sonys its not even noticeable. gen 6 consoles and wii component 240p look great on them as well. I would recommend never touching an RCA flatscreen holy shit i went through 3.

My holy grail is a 20-25 inch trinitron with a curved screen and s-video but i haven't ever seen one in the wild.

It's not an impressive TV by any measure and absolutely required a service mode crawl to be presentable, but it seems kind of young to be experiencing the problem. It's only really noticeable against dark backgrounds and high contrast images. I hear phosphor trails are supposed to lessen as the set ages. Anyone know if there's any truth to that? That's pretty common for CRT TVs I think. A lot of sets just have inherent horizontal overscan you can't do anything about. Not sure why but I know my TV is like that too. I can adjust vertical size and position in the service menu but only horizontal position. Personally I'm fine with that as most games of the time were developed with that overscan in mind.

Emulationfag here. Should I go for a CRT Monitor, or try and find a way to hook up my PC to a CRT TV? Last I looked into it there was a lot of stuff about having to use special drivers/software to get a PC to output the right signal for a TV, plus having to use special hardware to force 240p output instead of 480i, which all seems like it might be too much effort compared to just plugging the PC into a monitor and being done with it. I had found that before, the thing is I think you need a linux/windows pc with an ir blaster to do that method.

Like, I think the remote works like this. First press is waiting for outside ir to learn from, every press after it sends the learned code out. I am not sure if the L336 has "default" ir codes for each button to send out, because if it did then my remote is fried as there doesn't seem to be action on any button I hit. I think even the OSSC can "learn" from any random remote too.

Sounds complex but I just can't seem to figure out if mine died. Also, maybe if an amazon/ebay replacement would be a good buy. Or if I pay the $30 for one from the OSSC site and wait a few weeks.

Now, power cycle the OSSC while holding BTN1 on the OSSC's PCB. A target function name (e.g. "MENU") will then be displayed on the OSCC's LCD screen. Press the corresponding key on the remote control, if the OSSC receives the code correctly you will be prompted to confirm the new code. Press the same key again to confirm, or BTN0 on the OSSC's PCB to go to the previous key. If you press BTN0 when configuring the first key, the default keymaps will be loaded.

Question. Pic related. Is this my framemeister and open source scan converter doing this? Or has genesis with 32x always done this with RGB out? (Don't have any other way to test Genesis as I only have 32x cables)

First, focusing on the water. See the kinda vertical lines? I see that in a few games and I guess I just ignored them before? Looks like every other vertical line the shading is different for specific elements like seen. What exactly about my setup is causing this as it happens on my crt, OLED, gaming monitor, etc. Is this also an issue without upscaling or similar? Is the issue with RGB (tried scart and hdretrovision ypbrpr cables too)

Second, those dots on the bottom. I know some games have a mask or overscan your TV does that hide things like that. They almost look like colors on screen being cached? Similarly I have seen them as static almost on other games. Dungeon Explorer it looked like my crt was out of sync, but only the bottom 1-3 lines. In GnG it is just a rainbow of changing color.

Sorry for this long post.

I just tried that first bit earlier actually (like 15 minutes ago). I forgot to mention. Even with other tv remotes in the house, I can't get the led to blink no matter. I tried the btn1 hold while turning on and that brings up the menu for setting up new buttons for a new remote, yet no remote works.

I might have just found out tonight that it isn't the remote but the OSSC IR receiver. I also tried the btn0 too, which looks to default but still no led blink from a remote of any kind.

Vertical bars look like jailbars. Tend to creep in on lower quality cables more often, but even decent cables can have them; It's from interference with in the system itself and likes to show most often on blue. The blue backgrounds of Sonic 1/2 are especially easy to see them. There are a few different mods that can be done to get rid of them.

Dots at the bottom are normal; It has to do with color and palette data; If it's being read or written to at certain times, it can appear on screen as those dots at the bottom. Again, Sonic 2 is game that shows this well; Particularly in 2 Player mode, if I'm remembering correctly.

The genesis video out has jailbars and this is what this looks like. When you play any genesis while using a signal that is as clean as svideo it better, you will get jailbars which are alternating vertical stripes which shows up on solid colours. You won’t get this on the genesis composite and rf because the signal quality is so poor. Take a look t a few more genesis games and see if the bars are still there on solid colours and you’ll know this is your problem. The only way to fix this is to physically modify your genesis, you need to cut a trace which carries composite apparantly

>> No.5156309

All Mega Drive hardware revisions I've tried have faint jailbars on the blue channel. It's caused by the blue line passing close to noisy components on the mainboard and can only be eliminated at source by fitting an RGB bypass kit which re-routes the signals directly from the VDP. High end displays may offer a low pass filter which also works - my Pioneer Kuro cleans up the signal beautifully.

Flickering coloured pixels at the bottom of the screen are perfectly normal. Adjust vertical overscan and/or blanking if they bother you.

I think I had masking on or something previously. Maybe I just don't use my genesis enough and never noticed the bottom palette data.
>>5156308
Definitely looked that up and am going to try it.

This is a first run Genesis (the HD logo one) with a first run 32x, on a sega cd 2. Any idea if the 32x is just a pass-through? Would that need to be modified at all? I imagine the jailbars are being passed into the 32x that just spits them out as is. Is there a possibility of removing the composite lead (c28) making my rgb cable not work? The vertical lines are due to the Genesis' poor composite video encoding. I have two RGB cables (a higher-quality CSYNC cable from that UK site, and a cheap chinkshit cable off ebay that does sync on composite). So the better CSYNC cable shows absolutely zero jailbar effect, whereas the cheaper sync-on-composite cable does.

I also believe theoretically there's an easy way to fix the jailbar problem while still using sync-on-composite, but to do this you need to cut some traces and disable normal composite (and RF) output, which sounds like a bad idea to me.

So if I got one of these to use on my CRT that only has mono RCA input, I can't imagine I'd actually get stereo separation out of it right? In a situation where a console sends Left out of White and Right out of Red, that adapter would allow your tv to hear both left and right console audio out of any speakers the tv has inside of it via just one RCA input. That just means all console audio will come out of every speaker at once.

As for the mono 2x deal. There is a mistake there. It wouldn't actually be mono 2x. It would be stereo downmix to all speakers. The source is still two separate channels, so mono 2x would imply a single channel across multiple speakers.

I honestly think this discussion is one that has no official answer. They are 100% jailbars, but the issue seems to be user related with only mods as the official fix.

Of my two genesis 1 units, one has them and one doesn't regardless of cables. But when I add the 32x, the jailbars are gone... EXCEPT with one set of cables from retrogamingcables on the system that normally doesn't have them.

The fix? Those retrogamingcables needed more shielding and that fixed it. (why my hdretrovision cables worked, because they are shielded different)

The fix for the other console? I tossed some rubber sealant on the composite lead and they went away. Probably acts as an insulator.

I bet we could all explain what fixed our issue and not a single thing would line up enough as a catch all. Try better cables, try another unit with your cables, try a 32x, remove the 32x, try different outlet/power setup, etc. I think the only thing anyone can guarantee is that composite lead mod but that is extreme.

Is it possible your Diamondtron has a "Super Bright" setting that is toggled on? That slams the contrast through the roof to make an image pop more, and could hypothetically be connected to your issue.

Otherwise, it's something that could be adjusted (and not requiring a windas equivalent).

So how do you guys feel about bigger CRT sets, like 32 and 36 inch TVs? I feel like it's the ideal way to play retro crap but it seems like most people tend to go with a 27 inch or smaller.

The general idea is that going smaller will provide a sharper image so in some cases people prefer 5, 8, 14 inch PVMs. The other idea is larger sets work great for coops or split screens or fighters or 3d, like Halo or Smash.

The chance of a larger set having more geometry issues is pretty high. Probably due to those larger sets being released when CRTs started to be mass produced as cheap. Geometry issues become more noticeable with sprite-like games than 3d as well. Which just pushes people to smaller sets for solo play but larger sets for multiplay.

27 is easy enough for an average dude. The further you go up, the exponentially heavier they get, especially if it's a flat tube, those are always heavier for some reason, I'm sure. I had a 32" that I hauled both up and down a flight of stairs by myself. The issue isn't so much the weight, but many of them are designed with no good place to grip on your own.

Disagree on the PVM, especially since they almost always have handles in the cases right at the best point to grab it at. They're weighty, but not nearly as cumbersome as consumer sets with their massive cases and built-in speakers.

Sony fans will appreciate this rare piece of history I just scored at an auction. The circa 1982 Sony Videoscope KP-5040 front projection set. This thing is nuts - the front mirror is motor driven on arms, heavy wood case over a steel frame. All the pieces for it surfaced (screen, mirror, hardware) - only found the pj at first, and without the mirror and special curved screen it would have been tricky.

Included all the paperwork, like manual, warranty cards, and the original receipt for $3200 in 1982 (the inflation calculator puts that at over $8k today). The most expensive TV you could get back then - thing has composite input and stereo sound, a billion adjustments.

I could imagine the impression of hooking your Colecovision/Intellivision/2600 up to this back in the day. Pure class.

I'm planning to hook my laserdisc player up to it and will spin my copy of the Captain Harlock movie Arcadia of my Youth - appropriately enough from 1982.

The moment of truth was plugging it in, and sure as shit it came right up, sound, all 3 tubes good, and static projected on the wall. Try doing that with a modern TV 36 years from now - this thing was built to last forever with huge discrete metal transistors driving the CRTs.

All won for a princely $15 bid.

Pretty certain yes, as it is NTSC resolution at decent size as opposed to the later high rez data CRT projectors. Yeah, a simulated picture wouldn't capture the curvature of the screen and brightness in ambient light (front pj needs light control, but this thing does have a high gain screen so it will work in lit conditions as the vids I linked showed).

I'm really looking forward to watching some laserdiscs on it, with the pure analog signal chain driving about the biggest image - it's 50 inches - you can stand at NTSC rez before needing upscaled front CRT pj for movie watching.

Yes, the right image is scaled improperly but I think you're missing the point. The original post (>>5163345) is about how graphic designers utilized scanlines/dot pitches to make sprite art look better and add detail. Yes there are better options for either side (Higher quality CRT/signal, proper scaling on LCD) but the idea of the image is how they optimized 8-bit graphics for CRTs. Adding "They both look like shit" isn't really furthering the discussion.

On a CRT at 240-480 the differences is almost indistinguishable between i and p when you're playing games. Only in some high contrast areas where there's a static HUD element or small text can you notice interlacing. If you're already used to playing PS2/GC on a CRT at 480i it's no different.

Anyone know anything about these Colortrak 2000 CRTs? I've been trying to find something that does RGB antively & this 32 inch monster caught my eye. Is that really a euro scart port in the back, or would it only do composite?

Just bought a Toshiba. Why do the black spots bleed so badly? Makes his eyes and nose look terrible, my Emerson and the other shitty CRT I have don't do this and yeah I fucked around with the contrast, brightness, and sharpness to no avail

Yeah, it's composite, but it looks fine on my other CRTs. What would you recommend, RGB?

>> No.5166850

>>5166837
with the genesis I would first recommend either getting a Model 1 Genesis, or if you're super luck, a JVC X'eye. Those 2 systems have the best video output with reduced jailbars (you can technically mod any genesis for perfect video but it requires soldering & a custom build bypass board)

The genesis uses dithering a LOT, so some games look better with composite, & others look better in RGB. Most models of genesis have absolutely HORRIBLE composite video, which is a problem it shares with the NEOGEO since they use the same composite (transcoder?) inside. It's honestly entirely up to you. Do you want a blended picture or a razor sharp one? This is one of those things you'll have to see in person to decide which you like best. before you do any of that I would recap your genesis. It's an antique at this point so it could fail on you if a cap leaks & eats through a trce on the board.

Been considering picking up a Model 1, I've got a Model 2. Thinking of getting a CRT monitor to emulate on as I don't have the room for a proper CRT TV. Does anyone know anything about ADi MicroScan PD-697 and whether I'd be able to use CRT SwitchRes with it at the resolution?

>> No.5168975

>>5168969
If you get that as a secondary monitor you could just leave it at 1280x1024@60hz or 50hz and use the emulator to scale it. Most retro consoles won't fill the height at 4x so you would have to figure that out.

Loos like at 1024x768 you could do 80hz. But that would be horrible for emulating a NTSC/PAL signal.
