PS1 or 3DS? Which version is the best game and would you recommend me to play, /vr/?

>> No.5156318

It comes down to which graphical style you prefer and whether you can stand the TEEEEERRIBLE accents on the 3DS

>> No.5156365

>>5156318
There's a bit more to it. 3DS version is more streamlined via nerfing puzzles & such. Some consider that a plus, others REEEE over it.

>> No.5156495

Played both, for the longest time I would piss and moan about the "streamlineing" but now that I'm 33 and don't have unlimited time I can see the best way to play is thw 3ds version. Hoping they clean it up a bit and port it to the switch.

>> No.5157254

Sorry to defecate on your thread but I don't want to make another one for the same series:

Is there a translation for the English release of DQ1 (Dragon Warrior) that makes it closer to the original script? Thanks.

>> No.5157514

Definitely 3ds, not only it adds lots content but makes unnecessary slow moments faster, only accent whiners prefer the PS1 version

>> No.5157517

>>5156314
3DS has shorter loading times, less retarded puzzles, a rebalanced job system and cut down the grinding you need to survive strong enemies and advance in your job.
Plus it added a VERY useful radar to find the missing shards, also added a couple of characters who can point you in the right direction if you don't know where to go or what to do, and finally it added a "our journey so far" option to remind you what were you doing in case you can't play the game for some time and don't remember what were you supposed to do once you resume it.

Depends on whether you are a softcock that likes watered down remakes or a real man that doesn't want to miss out on all the original has to offer. You probably want the remake, I haven't seen a real man since I sold my mirror.

I can never finish this fucker.
>play it normally
>suddenly an event in my life pops up and i have to leave it for a week

>"uhh shit what was i doing"
>restart
>dont play for a few months
>repeat

At this point the people who constantly bitch about them is equally in sufferable.

There is that "story so far" option designed for exactly that reason.

>> No.5157818

>>5157767
I think you're supposed to play it for like 20-60 minutes a day and take like 4 months to finish it so like

MOST people didn't actually finish it, nor do they finish most DQ games

>> No.5157964

>>5157818
Patrician taste. This is how you play Dragon Quest games in general. Hate how the zoomers try to finish them as soon as possible then complain "the game is too long" as if someone forced them to do it.

I do this with other RPGs but something about DQ's streamlined, straightforward combat is so addictive I can't help binge-playing all of them.

Not everyone is aware of them and thus they need to be at least informed.

Play the original, the remake is shit.

>they cut down the skills and dumbed down the job system which is the biggest crime possible against dq7 as it features hands down the best implementation of the dq class system in the entire series.
>they cut out huge chunks of content and story.
>paradoxically they added a post-game whose content actually goes against the game's main narrative.
>they reduced the enemy stats across the board.
>they inflated shop-keepers' inventories with more powerful items to beat the new, weaker monsters even faster.
>addition of the item bag which eliminates the need for player management of resources: something which all DQ games are built around. to be fair to the dq7-remake though, ALL of the dq-remakes are guilty of this sin.

>> No.5159148

>>5156314
3DS is more fun. Better graphics, faster and a bit scarier. Animated moves look awesome. Only complaint is that the new one is really a bit too easy.

>> No.5159151

>>5159138
Huh? Even the PS1 version of DQ7 had an item bag. Unless you mean the original Japanese version didn't have it and was added for overseas PS1 releases as well.

dq7 as it features hands down the best implementation of the dq class system in the entire series.
It's almost identical, I played both versions and didn't notice any difference other than the customs, also 9 has the best system.
paradoxically they added a post-game whose content actually goes against the game's main narrative.
It could have been better if he joined again, was pretty cool
they inflated shop-keepers' inventories with more powerful items
Don't buy them?
addition of the item bag
Nigga that's been in dq games since ages and it's a good thing, otherwise you have garbage inventory a la Mother
they cut out huge chunks of content and story
A cutscene and the most boring dungeon on DQ's history?

>>5156314
The 3ds version has some nerfs to some of the more retarded puzzles, a better job system, quickier load times, and some nice post game goodies, the main downside is the dub and its horrendous accents, but overall both versions are really good

>> No.5159414

honestly DQ7 has a horrible power creep where if you actually grind at all to mess with the job system the game becomes laughably easy and it takes all the piss out of the plot, and you just kind of follow the story around doing whatever without feeling a lot of agency

>series:
Only played the ps1 version and this game was a huge disappointment. Too grindy after the midway point and too long of a game to have such little substance, the job system was interesting but wasn’t enough for me to play it again, I recommend something else and not waste 120 hours of your life like I did on this game. I remember the beginning was good, the middle was good, but the end was a letdown, it’s been 7 years so I only vaguely rememeber

Never played PS1 but I was in the same boat as you so I played the first hour on PS1 and then tried the first hour on 3DS (citra). It looked and played so much god damn better on 3DS that I couldn't be bothered with the PS1 version.

Maybe you could play the first XX hours on PS1 to experience the first puzzles first hand and then replay the same shit in 1-2 hours on 3DS to get the "full experience" but that's only if you feel the need. You could also just watch a longplay on the PS1 version a get an approximate feel.

DQIV DS to me is a masterclass in simple but effective design, sure it has problems, however it is such an enjoyable guided tour along the limited story buttressed by solid gameplay that I just don't get bored of it. The only part that is a drag is the third chapter and that's just because a few bad UI choices.

I've played it through around five time, each time taking less and less time, with my last 100% playthrough taking just ~20 hours.

IV DS is missing heaps of content and features. Also the translation in the 30 year old NES games is shockingly superior.

This is how it was for most Super Nintendo games back in the day. You'd play for like an hour or two max, then get bored and go hang out with friends. Not spend eight hours parked in front of the TV like a zoomer.

3DS.
It's like half the playtime (60~ hours vs 110 or so) and none of it's qualitatively different content. (the big changes are giving you a radar so you don't miss out on the progression pieces strewn about the dungeons and cutting the shit first dungeon that slowed down the early game to a crawl)
