He's a confirmed autist who doesn't even like playing deathmatch. After enduring failure after failure he quit the gaming industry outright. His accomplishments were all technical and some in leadership but others formed the actual game design. His engine was very useful at the time but its legacy and influence is unknown, I'm sure they would have figured out how to properly do fps anyway.

He did.

He talked about how much of a wreck it was changing engines and trying to do so much and how it lead to so many staff leaving that he was trying to finish the whole game at the last minute practically alone. He apologize for the advertisements too even though those weren't his idea.

>>5152593
I dunno man its fairly bad. Its not as bad as people say. Andromeda today was way worse of a pile of shit as a game. Daikatana had a few good idea buried in it for its time, but shit the bed due to being overhyped and nobody around to say something was a neat idea but wouldn't work in game or couldn't be designed in reasonable time.

Seriously if someone had said hey good idea but lets make this one simple and put that in the sequel once we get the company going, the damn thing may have worked.

No. The game was practically finished in the Quake 1 engine and then they went through the grueling effort to convert it all to the Quake 2 engine.
He should have just finished it like that and released it, then try to work on a sequel in the new engine.

>>5152604
I always knew of Romero as very childish and impulsive (and part of that is why I like him), so I actually am not very surprised that he would get swept into that hysteria.
I don't think it's something worth holding against him, and I'm not a fan of him for his political leanings by any means.
The question is if he still feels that way, because I know he can change his tune over time on things, his feuding with Carmack ended not that long after Dai-Katana's failure.

>>5154069
It's a convenient way to distinguish a kind of sword from a specific place and era, which is mostly very distinct from most western swords.
There are also more kinds of Japanese swords than just the stereotypical pattern welded kind with a long and thick curved blade, and since Katana doesn't mean anything else to anyone outside of Japan, it's a good shorthand rather than saying "Japanese Sword", which could actually mean quite a lot of things.

It's a quirk of language.

You know, it's really quite amazing what a mess the development of Quake was, and how it was really just a big pile of compromises among people who were starting to not get along so great anymore, with lots of stalling and delaying, then hurriedly rushed to its deadline, and yet the game STILL came out great and sold fucking gangbusters.

It speaks volumes for the talent of the people involved, because lots of games have come out unbearable messes under similar circumstances.

>Alfonso John Romero was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the United States. He is of Mexican, Yaqui and Cherokee heritage. His mother Ginny delivered him six weeks premature. His parents, married only a few months before, had long been living in hard times. Ginny, good-humored and easygoing, met Alfonso Antonio Romero when they were teenagers in Tucson, Arizona. Alfonso, a first-generation Mexican American, was a maintenance man at an air force base, spending his days fixing air conditioners and heating systems. After Alfonso and Ginny got married, they headed in a 1948 Chrysler with three hundred dollars to Colorado, hoping their interracial relationship would thrive in more tolerant surroundings.

>They kind of just didn't silence criticism or jokes about this at that point, out of like, apathy?
I can only speak for Hungary, but even before the Glasnost you had some prolific stand up comedian making fun of the state figures and communism. It was mostly seen as a safe way to let people laugh at their problems, vent some steam, to get it out of their system and then go back to their lives. Then again, after '56 not many felt like getting too uppity anyway, even if the draconian measures eased up relatively fast. Happiest barrack/goulash communism and all that jazz.
I'm sure poles or estonians have a different view of their time behind the iron courtain though.

Nigger, I occasionally buy new mid-range notebooks at work for our employees.
And I have yet to find a single fucking model that doesn't spin up its fan at basically ALL TIMES.
The worst one was an ASUS piece of shit last year, which cost more than a thousand dollars and was fucking beautiful. It also had a hidden fan that ran with a high-pitched screech PERMANENTLY, at 3000 fucking rounds per minute.

Also, nowadays you need 4GB of RAM (which have become hilariously expensive), a desktop-Celeron-tier CPU (which has become feasible on notebooks ever since AMD started buttfucking Intel, after those fucking five years where there was literally no tangible performance gain in newer CPUs) and an SSD for smooth basic Windows usage.
Bump up the various attributes if you have special needs, like 8GB of RAM if you enjoy having more than ten tabs open, a better CPU if you actually use your CPU for something (which basically no one does nowadays) or a cheaper setup if you run Linux. Good luck with the drivers for Linux, though.
