Ugh, Hydlide. Just saying the name gives you a gag reflex like you're about to puke.

HYDLIDE. Sounds so wretched and foul. Maybe it's pronounced Hydlide, but who knows? AND WHO EVEN KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK IT MEANS?

Hydlide
When two dicks merge into one. This only happens in the abyss.
"Holy piss! Those two penises just Hydlided!"

"Hydliding sets bushes on FIRE!"

This. The only thing that sucks about Super Hydelide on the NES is the goddamned annoying as hell music. It does not have the scope or the polish of Legend of Zelda (which came years after the original Hydelide), and compares somewhat poorly.

Hydelide 2 is even better, and 3 is even better than that.

I haven't played Virtual Hydelide (it looks terrible), but my understanding is that it is very much like the first game, but with a randomized map. The first Hydelide game does not have a whole hell of a lot of replay value, once you solve all the puzzles and beat it, it is basically speedrunning time. Randomizing the placement of shit would give it more replay value.

Also, Jim's final resting place is in Melmond.

Virtual Hydlide looked good in magazines. The framerate is really low, and you often have troubles telling how far you are from the enemies.
The map is indeed randomized, but so are all the items except the importants ones (that you get after each boss), and even then... after you beat the first boss (a vampire, whose voice in a japanese commercial in reverse I think) you get a lamp, but sometimes you get a DX lamp, which is absolutely the same except it weights more. It's really puzzling.
And you'd better be lucky and find the dark sword for the dragon boss, or you're in for some really long fight.

Same, man. I mentioned before it's flawed, but it had a certain something to it.
- The bizarre setting with craters to motherfucking space.
- The music being catchy as fuck. From the more rock-ish themes to the more solemn track at the tower of Habel, it just feels good.
- The (at the time) super nifty daytime transitions giving it that extra ambiance (even if it made shopping a pain at times)
- The open yet barren yet not empty world with enough stuff to reward exploring, specially when you don't know where to go the first time. The right size to take some time but not big enough to make navigation tricky.
- The storyline is nonsensical, barebones and far from engrossing but I find some amusement to it. Specially the space rescue part with the compass.
- IT'S A JOKE
- Sadly the Genesis versions uses a very brown and dead palette for the overworld compared to the other version's more lush green, but while I prefer the green, the dry panorama kinda makes it more poignant.

But yeah, I thought I knew basically everything there was to know about Nintendo history at this point. They still throw me a curveball sometimes though.

I really enjoy T&E Soft's "Golf" for virtual boy. Has great 3D effects. If you want a golf game, I really recommend NES Open Tournament (very hard for newbies to golf games), Hal's Hole in One Golf (also not very easy), or Wonder Classic on the wonderswan. Have fun mate.

It's a genre that grabbed my attention recently. I like golf games, they're pretty enjoyable and can be a nice way to relax.

I mean to be honest, you're saying that it's awkward for someone who is on a retro games board, on a website for shut-in obsessives, to have an unusual amount of knowledge around an obscure or unusual topic? I don't know what you expect of /vr/, but a lot of the people here actually do play a lot of games, and consider it important to know a lot about the things they find interesting. If anything, it's worse that you would point out this kind of knowledge as being something to be taken in a negative light. Maybe you would have some ground to stand on in a more "normal" environment, but this is not that environment.

This is something I feel like a lot of computer RPG's fail to effectively capture, is just how terrifying the classic D&D monsters were.

Like, when talking about D&D monsters, it often gets overlooked that about half the enemies in D&D are just regular things that exist in real life. Bandits, packs of wolves, bears, crocodiles (along with larger and more aggressive "dire" counterparts).

The actual "monster" monsters in D&D tended to be horrifying monstrosities that should be avoided if possible. Like, slimes are scary. They're big and squishy, but lack any internal organs so there are no obvious weak points. Pretty much the only way to fight one is to blast it with magical attacks, try to freeze it or burn it and hope it can feel pain.

It was nothing groundbreaking, sure, but I don't see what's so offensive about it besides the grinding at the start and the Indiana Jones music.
Plus, the grinding can easily be fixed by turning on the "High-Speed Mode" in the menu, which doubles the speed. We also live in the 21st century, you can mute the game and turn on some of your own music.

look up "gamesack parody" or whatever.
notice how he's mostly mocking these e-celebs in a friendly way, but the avgn part seems a bit more vitriol-fueled. Word is that Joe approached Cinemassacre and (Mike, who is the one that manages PR online) told him they weren't interested in appearing on the credits of the video or whatever (the other guys like MJR and HCG were cool with it).
Fast forward last year, this hair color bitch was doing a livestream of Castlevania IV, and Joe from GS was talking to her in the chat, giving him advice and white knighting her from the people who were calling her shit at the game.
Then fast forward to halloween 2018 and Mike Matei appears openly displaying that he's dating this girl.

It literally is. It is the first game that ever actually tried open world mechanics halfway decently. Sam Houser once said "Every game developer who said he doesn't copy from Zelda is a liar". Welp, guess what, the first Legend of Zelda literally copied Hydlide and fixed a shitload of the early mechanics of the game. So basically, the open world genre exists how it does right now because of the existence of Hydlide.
That it get so shat on from e celebs is kind of a douche move. It probably plays like shit for todays standards, because Nintendo took the game, polished it and brought it out as the objectively better Legend of Zelda, but back when it came out it was praised because everything was new. You can't judge games from back then for todays standards, if we does such stuff, we must also rate "Untouchable" classics like Tomb Raider or Wolfenstein 3D lower and ignore everything they did for their specific genre, because the games after that did it better.

He also got married and brought his wife into the videos he makes now, terrible idea. Just watch her video about DQXI's music, it's full of factually wrong information and political opinions.

At least James knew better and so far has kept his wife mostly isolated from his work.

To be fair Sugiyama is a fucking asshole for denying the Rape of Nanking. Every single sane Japanese person admits it happened. It's like if Germany were to deny the Holocaust and yet nobody ever takes old Japanese racists to task for this.

Okay, maybe that's true, but he did make a symphonic soundtrack for DQXI which people have already made a patch for so in that case he's an even bigger dick for keeping that out of the game.

And it is DEFINITELY the case that he ruined the 3DS ports of DQ7 and 8 with this shit. Thankfully those have patches too but something needs to be done about this grumpy old fart.

And let me just add that while some of his work is good the original Dragon Warrior has the worst fucking battle theme I have ever heard in my life so it is fucking astounding that this man somehow built a career off that. He's no Uematsu, who was damn good from the start.

I don't know about what y'all's bar for abnormality is, but he's definitely cringy as hell. I've read the shit he deletes a day later on tumblr and was reminded of, like, nerds on mid 2000's anime forums convinced they're gonna eventually get pussy there. The fact that he looks like a flightless bird adds to the effect.

Your guess is correct, they're all fucking unhinged. Anyone who makes their living off YouTube gaming videos is not going to be a socially adjusted person. The enjoyable ones are the ones who accept they're going to be nothing more than that and fully embrace it, instead of trying to convince themselves they're normal.
